Be it'known that I, HIRAM BOND, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certa-in Improvements in Heel-Burnishing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of heelburnishing machines in which the burnishingtool oscillates in the arc of a circle, and is provided with a yielding movement which enables it to conform to the curvature of a boot or v shoe heel.
The object of my invention is to produce a machine of this class inwhich the burnishingtool has a continuous rotating movement in addition to the oscillating movement, and also to provide certain improvements iuthe construction of the tool and its support.
To these ends my invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim. y
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part lof this specification, Figure l represents a front elevation of aheel-burnishing machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section ofthe tool audits holder.

In the drawings, c represents the supportingstandard, in which is journaled an oscillating shaft or arbor, b, which is oscillated by a pinion, c, on its end, a rack-segment, d, meshing with said pinion and formed on alevr, c, which is pivoted at f to the standard a, and a pitman, g, connecting the lever c with an eccentric, h, on a driving-shaft, t'.
j represents a block rigidly attached to the oscillating shaft b, and 7c represents a tool-carrying arm pivoted at Z to said block, the pivot Z being at right angles with the shaft b', so that the swinging end of the arm 7a can approach and recede from the axial line of vsaid shaft.

In carrying out my invention, I provide the tool-carrying arm k with a rotary tool, r, hav'- ing a burnishing portion, 2, a shank, 3, and a pulley, 4, all preferably formed in'one piece, and provided with a cavity, 5, which receives a non-rotating stud, 6, projecting from the arm 7c, the tool being adapted to rotate on said stud. The swinging end of the frame s is supported by a spring, z, and is connected with the tool-carrying arm Ala by a link, c', which'is pivoted to said frame and arm, and causes the frame to conform to the upward and downward movements of the arm, thus keeping tau the belt which drives the tool. It will be seenthat the tool is thus adapted to rotate continuously while it oscillates over the heel. The effect of the machine is therefore muchimproved in certain kinds of work, such as in burnishing waxed heels-a class of work which heretofore has not been done on the'Tapley machine.

The combination ofthe block j, secured to an oscillating shaft, the tool-carrying arm f, pivoted to said block, nieans for exerting an inward pressure on said arm, a rotary tool pivoted or journaled on said arm, and provided with a pulley, 4, swinging frame s, pivoted upon a driving-shaft, and provided with a pulley, w, belted to a pulleyv on the drivingshaft, and with a pulley, x, belted to the pulley on the rotary tool, and a link connecting said frame with the tool-carrying arm k, and causing the latter to follow the upward and downward movements of said arm, as set forth.
