The main objects of the invention are:

First, to provide a container carton assembly or unit in which the carton is adapted to receive some part or article desirable for use in connection with the contents of the container.

Second, to provide a carton. which may be quickly attached to a container with thecontainer constituting a support and closure for the carton.

Objects relating to details and economies ofthe invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims. 7

There are certain products such as waxes and finishing materials in the application of which it is desirable to use an applicator or the like well adapted for the particular material. A primary object of this invention is to provide a carton adapted to receive an applicator or other article States Patent ice of. The carton of the embodiment of our invention i1" lustrated in Figs. 1 to 7 is formed of an integral blank of paperboard or the like and comprises a rear wall 3, side walls 4 and 5 hingedly connected to the edges of the rear wall as by the scores 6. The side wall 5 is substantially narrower than the side wall 4 and is provided with a flap- 7 hingedly connected thereto by the score line 8. The rear wall 3 has end members 9 hingedly connected thereto at 10. The side wall 4 has end wall members 11 hingedly connected thereto at 12.

The end wall members 11 have tongues 13 on their outer edges hingedly connected'thereto at 14-, that is, onv their outer edges as viewed in the blank but which are on their inner edges when the carton is erected.

.The side wall member 5 has end wall members 15 hingedly connected thereto at 16. The end wall members 11 have slits 17 which desirably extend across the hinging score. The end wall members 15 are conformed to provide locking tongues 18 engageable with the slits 17 with the end wall member 15 overlapping the end wall members 11. It will be noted that with this arrangement the end wall members 11 lie between the end wall members 15 and the end members 9 with the tongues 13 projecting from the inner edges of the end walls, that is, they project prior to being folded back to operative position as shown in Fig. 6, in which position they lie within the end walls and are directed toward the rear wall.

The embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 7 is designed to be applied to one corner of the container and when so applied the side wall 4 overlaps one side wall of the container with the side wall 5 in supported relation to the adjacent end wall of the container and with its flap 7 inturned to effectively retain the article packaged in the carton. The erected end walls overlap the ends of the container with the tongues 13 in springable retaining engagement with the chimes or rims of the container. Thus arranged, the container closes the carton and constitutes a supporting carrier for the carton, thus providing a merchandising unit. The carton may be of relatively light stock as it is effectively supported substantially throughout by' the more rigid container.

One of the advantages of the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 7 as compared to that of Figs. 8 to 11 is that the assemblies may be nested as illustrated by full and dotted lines in Fig. 3. However, certain containers may be relatively l narrow or the product packaged in the carton may require more space than would be provided in a carton such as shown in Figs. 1 to 7.

In the embodiment of Figs. 8 to 11 the rear wall 19 is the full width of the carton while the side walls 20 and 21 are of equal width. The end wall members 22 are for use in connection withthe contents ofthe container somewhat narrower than the corresponding end walls 9. The end wall members 23 are provided with tongues 24 corresponding to the tongues 13 and the end wall members 23 are slit at 25 to receive the tongues 26 on the end wall members 27 of the side wall 3. These several parts are hingedly connected together by score lines indicated generally at 28. When erected the carton substantially the same as that of the previously described embodiment with the exception that it is of such width as to embrace one end of the container with the tongues 24 in locking engagement with the rims 2 at the top and bottom of the container. A packaged article is conventionally indicated at 30 in Fig. 9. The container serves to support and is a carrier for the carton with its contents.

Having thus described our invention what 'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination, a rectangular container having chimed ends, an article holder carton formed integrally of a cut and scored blank of paperboard and comprising a rear wall of less width than the width of the container, first and second side walls hingedly connected to the rear wall, the second wall being of substantially less width than the first wall and having an infolded flap hingedly connected to its longitudinal edge, and end wall members hingedly connected to the ends of said rear and first and second side wal s, the end wall members connected to said first and second side walls positioned on the .outer sides of the end wall members connected to the rear Wall and having tongue and slot interlocking engagement, the end wall members connected to said firstside wall having tongues hingedly connected to their outer side edges and positioned at the inner edges of the end walls when the carton is erected and are folded inwardly thereof and springablyengaged with the chimes of the container when the carton is applied thereto with the first side wall in lapping engagement with one wall of the container and with the inturned flap of the second side wall in supported engagement with an adjacent wall of the container where by the carton is supported on and the container constitutes a closure for the carton and the container and cartonwith its contents constitutes a unit.

2. In combination, a rectangular container having chimed ends, an article holder carton formed integrally of a cut and scored blank of paperboard and comprising a rear wall of less width than the width of the container, first and second side walls hingedly connected to the rear wall, the second wall being of substantially less width than the first wall and end wall members hingedly connected to the ends of said rear and first and second side walls, the end wall members connected to said first and second side walls positioned on the outer sides of the end wall members connected to the rear wall and having tongue and slot interlocking engagement, the end wall members connected to said first side wall having tongues hingedly connected to their outer side edges and positioned at the inner edges of the end walls when the carton is erected and are folded inwardly thereof and springably engaged with the chimes of the container when the carton is applied thereto with the first side wall in lapping engagement with one wall of the container and with the inturned flap of the second side wall in supported engagement with an adjacent wall of the container whereby the carton is supported on and the container constitutes a closure for the carton and the container and carton with its contents constitutes a unit.

3. In combination a rectangular container having chimed ends, an article holder carton formed integrally of a cut and scored blank of paperboard and comprising a rear wall of less width than the width of the container, first and second side walls hingedly connected to the rear wall, the second wall being of less width than the first wall and having a flap hingedly connected to its longitudinal edge, and overlapping end wall members hingedly connected to the ends of said rear and first and second walls and adapted to overlap the ends of the container when the carton is mounted thereon, one ofthe end wall members at each end of the carton having a tongue hingedly connected thereto and foldable inwardly thereof when the carton is erected and retainingly engaging the chimes of the container when the carton is applied thereto with the first side wall in lapping engagement with one wall of the container and with the inturned flap of the second side wall in supported engagement with an adjacent wall of the container whereby the carton is sup.- ported and the container constitutes a closure for the carton. 3

4. In combination, a rectangular container having chimed ends, an article holder carton formed integrally of a cut and scored blank of paperboard and comprising a rear wall of lesswidth than the width of the container, first and second side walls hingedly connected to the rear wall, the second Wall being of less width than the first wall, and overlapping end wall members hingedly connected to the ends of said rear and first and second walls and adapted to overlap the ends of the container when the carton is mounted thereon, one 'of the end wall members at each .end of the carton having a tongue hingedly connected thereto and foldable inwardly thereof when the carton is erected and retainingly engaging with the chimes of the container when the carton is applied thereto with the first side wall in lapping engagement with one wall of the container and with the second side wall in supported engagement with anadjacent 'wall of the'container whereby the carton is snpperted and the container constitutes a closure for the carton.

5. The combination with a container having chimed ends, an article holding carton supportedly engageable with said container and comprising a rear wall, opposed side walls connected to the side edges of the rear wall, inner end wall members .hingedly connected to the end edges of the rear wall and being of a length approximately that of the width of the side walls, outer end wall members connected to the end edges of said side walls and disposed in overlapping relation to the inner end wall members when in erected position, the inner of said side wall end members being dimensioned to correspond approximately to the cross sectional dimension of the carton "and being provided 'with slits, the outer of said end wall members having tongues retainingly engaging with said slits when the carton is erected, the inner'of said end wall members connected to the side walls being provided with flaps foldable inwardly over'the front edges of the said inner end wall members and being in thrust engagement therewith, said flaps being directed toward the rear wall and having retaining engagement with the chimes of the :container when the carton is applied thereto with the side walls of the carton in supported engagement with the container, the container when the carton is so engaged therewith con stituting a closure for the carton as well as a support therefor.

6. The combination with a container having chimed ends, an article holding carton supportedly engageable with said container and comprising a rear wall, opposed side walls connected to the side edges of the rear wall, inner end wall members :hingedly connected to the end edges of the rear wall and being of a length approximately that of the width 'of the side walls, outer end wall members connected to the end edges of said side walls and disposed in overlapping relation to said inner end wall members when in erected position, the inner of said side wall members being dimensioned to correspond approximately to the cross sectional dimension of the carton, the'inner of said end wall members connected to the side walls being provided with flaps foldable inwardly over the front edges of the said 'inner end wall members and directed toward the rear wall and having retaining engagement with chimes of the container when the carton is applied thereto with the side walls of the carton in supported engagement with the container, the container when the carton is so engaged therewith constituting a support therefor.

7. The combination with a container having chimed ends, 'an article holding carton supportedly engageable with said container and comprising a rear wall, opposed side walls connected to the side edges of the rear wall, inner end wall members extending forwardly from the end edges of the wall, overlapping connected outer end wall members connected to the end edges of said side walls and overlapping said inner end wall members when in erected position, the dinner of said side wall members being dimensioned to correspond approximately tn the cross-sectional dimension of the carton and being provided with flaps foldable inwardly, and directed toward the rear wall and having retaining engagement with the chimes of the container when the carton is applied thereto with the side walls of the carton in supported engagement with the container, the container when the carton is so engaged therewith constituting a closure for the carton as well as a support therefor.
