7 Claims. (Cl. 220-113) This invention relates to twin-compartmented article carriers having six article receiving cells in each compartment and which are adapted to flatly collapse for economical shipment and storage and thereafter easily erected as required to receive the article contents.
This application is a division of my copending application Serial No. 441,768, filed July 7, 1954, now Patent No. 2,820,571.
Twin-compartmented carriers made in accordance with this invention possess an unusually strong backbone structure which includes a center partition extending substantially down to the erected bottom panel for the full length of the carrier. The backbone structure also incorporates a plural-ply handle part extending the full length of the carrier and which projects above the side panels for a convenient height. The outer faces of the side panels, end panels and handle part present smooth and finished surfaces of substantial area for the reception of advertising decoration. The carrier cells are defined by substantially full height cross partitions providing complete cushioned protection for adjacent articles contained in the cells. The cross partitions are hingedly connected to the center partition and side panels in a manner to permit flat collapse of the carrier and additionally provide stiifening reinforcement for the side panels and center partition.
These carriers are designed to be made from one-piece blanks which can be scored and cut with little resultant waste from selected paperboard or fiberboard stock sheets previously finished, printed and decorated on one side thereof only. These blanks are so cut and formed as to permit high speed gluing and folding thereof into collapsed bottle carriers in a single pass of the blanks through a substantially standard gluing and folding machine.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent as the disclosure proceeds.
Although the characteristic features of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, and the manner in which it may be carried out, may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which:

In the manufacture of carrier forming blanks as illustrated in Fig. 1, paperboard or fiberboard stock sheets are printed and decorated on one side thereof only and the stock sheets may then be given a single pass through a cutting and scoring machine adjusted to perform the requisite blank cutting and scoring operations. These carrier forming blanks are shaped and designed to yield little waste in cutting, and to permit high speed gluing and folding of the carrier blanks to produce completed carriers in collapsed form during a single pass through a gluing and folding machine of substantially standard construction.
From the blank as shown in Fig. 1, a twelve cell carrier may be assembled as shown in Fig. 9 which may have six full height cross partitions in each of the twin compartments. Two of the intermediate cross partitions in each compartment are all closely spaced to correspond to the thickness of the removed transverse partition wall of a shipping case, so that two carriers can be snugly fitted within a twenty-four bottle shipping case when its transverse partition wall has been removed.
The blank as shown in Fig. 1 has a bottom panel which comprises a pair of bottom half-sections 1--1' foldably connected along a longitudinally extending score 21. A pair of side panels 22' are foldably connected to the opposite side edges of the bottom sections 1-1' along parallel extending scores 22-22' which are also 1 parallel to the bottom collapsible score 21. Similar top and bottom end wings w-1 and w-3 are foldably connected by aligned transverse scores 23-23 to the left hand side edges of the side panels 2-2, and similar top and bottom end wings w-2 and w4 are foldably connected to the opposite side edges of the side panels 2-2 along aligned transverse scores 24-24. A center divider panel '54 is captured from material between the top and bottom wings w2 and w4 and a companion center divider panel 53 is captured from material between the adjacent top and bottom wings w-1 and w3. The four wings w-l, w2, w-S and w4 may be similar in form and construction, and the center, divider panels 54 and 53 may also be similar in form and construction.
The top and bottom wings w-1 and w-3 at the left hand side of the blank as shown in Fig. l are scored to form a pair of similar end panel sections 3-3 foldably connected along the aligned transverse scores 23-23 to the adjacent side edges of the side panels 2-2, and a pair of similar center partition sections 45-45 are foldably connected along aligned transverse scores 75-75 to the respective end panel sections 3-3. A pair of similar cross partition sections 47-47" are foldably connected along aligned transverse scores 77-77 to the adjacent side edges of the center partition sections 45-45, and a pair of cross partition securing flaps 49-49 are foldably connected by aligned transverse scores 79-79 to the adjacent side edges of the cross partition sections 47-47. The length of the center partition sections 45 and 45 as defined between the transverse scores 75-77 and 75-77 are approximately equal to the length of a single carrier cell. However, handle forming extensions 51-51 extend laterally from the upper ends of the center partition sections 45-45 and are separated from the adjacent cross partition sections 47-47 by transverse cuts 81-81. The laterally projecting extensions 51-51 are used to form portions of a plural ply handle part for the carrier.
The top and bottom wings w-Z and w-4 at the right side of the blank shown in Fig. 1 are also scored to form a pair of similar end panel sections 4-4 foldably connected along aligned transverse scores 24-24 to the adjacent side edges of the side panels 2-2, and a pair of center partition sections 46-46 are foldably connected along the aligned transverse scores 76-76 to the respective end panel sections 4-4. A pair of cross partition sections 48-48 are foldably connected along aligned transverse scores 78-78 to the adjacent side edges of the center partition sections 46-46, and a pair of securing flaps 50-50 are foldably connected by aligned transverse scores 80-80 to the adjacent side edges of the cross partition sections 48-48. The center partition sections 46-46 as defined between the transverse scores 76-78 and 76-78 have a length approximately equal to the length of a single carrier cell. Overhanging projections 52-52 extend laterally from the upper portions of the center partition sections 46-46 and are separated from the cross partition sections 48-48 therebelow by transverse cuts 82-82.
The center partition structure for this twelve cell carrier is implemented by a pair of center divider panels 54 and 53 captured from material between the adjacent end wings w2 and w-4 and the adjacent end wings w-l and w-3. The center divider 54 is integrally hinged by a transverse score 74 to the lower edge of the center partition section 46, but is separated from the cross partition section 48 by a cut 74. The companion center divider panel 53 is foldably connected to the lower edge of the center partition section 45 by a longitudinal score 73, but is separated from the adjacent cross partition section 47 by a cut 73. The center divider panels 54 and 53 have a length which is slightly greater than the length of two carrier cells, and present side edges 54-53 which are substantially in alignment with the transverse scores 76-75.
A first pair of handle facing flaps 56-56 having a length substantially equal to the length of the erected carrier and are foldably connected at one end thereof to the adjacent side edge of the center partition sections 45-45 along transverse scores 75" which are substantially in alignment with the transverse scores 75-75. The handle facing flaps 56-56 are separated from the upper edge of the adjacent side panels 2-2. and end panel sections 3-3 by aligned cuts 2 and 3", but are temporarily connected by uncut necks 3" to the upper edge of the adjacent side panels 2-2 to facilitate folding assembly of the blank. Companion handle facing flaps 57-57 are foldably joined to the adjacent handle facing flaps 56-56 by longitudinally extending scores 86-36. The handle facing flaps 56-56 and 57-57 have hand holes 1% therein which fall into registry when the carrier is assembled.
A distinctive feature of this blank is the provision of outer wings w-9 and w-lil which are integrally associated with the handle facing flaps 57-57. The outer wings 111-9 and w-lil present center partition sections 58-58 integral with and projecting outwardly from the handle facing flaps 57-57. The center partition sections have a height substantially equal to the height of the cross partition sections of the carrier, and a length slightly greater than the length of two carrier cells. The center partition sections 58-58 are designed to overlap the adjacent side edges of the center divider panels 54 and 53 when the carrier is assembled to thereby provide a center partition which extends down the erected bottom panel for the length of the erected carrier.
At the right hand side of the blank, a pair of cross .partition'sections 60-60 are foldably connected by aligned transverse scores 88-88 to one side edge of the center partition sections 58-58, a pair of side wall liner sections 62-62 are foldably connected by aligned transverse scores -90 to the opposite side edges of the cross partition sections 66-60, a second pair of cross partition sections 64-64 are foldably connected to the opposite side edges of the side wall liner sections 62-62 along aligned transverse scores 92-92, and a pair of securing flaps 66-66 are foldably connected along aligned transverse scores 94-94 to the opposite side edges of the second pair of cross partition sections 64- 64.
At the left hand side of the outer wings w-9 and w-li), a pair of cross partition sections 59-59 are foldably connected by aligned transverse scores 89-89, to the adjacent side edges of the center partition sections 58- 58, a pair of side wall liner sections 61-61 are foldably connected along aligned transverse scores 91-91 to the opposite side edges of the cross partition sections 59-59, a second pair of cross partition sections 63-63 are foldably connected along aligned transverse scores 93-93 to the adjacent side edges of the side wall liner sections 61-61, and a pair of securing flaps 65-65 are foldably connected along aligned transverse scores 95-95 to the second pair of cross partition sections 63-63. The foldably connected cross partition sections 59-59 and side wall liner sections 61-61 have the upper ends thereof separated from the handle facing flaps 57-57 by longitudinal cuts 57", and the foldably connected cross partition sections 60-60 and adjacent side wall liner sections 62-62 are similarly separated at the upper ends thereof from the adjacent handle facing flaps 57-57 by longitudinal cuts 57".
Carrier blanks cut and scored as shown in Fig. 1 may be recovered from paperboard stock sheets by interfitting the blank patterns with little resultant waste of stock sheet material. These blanks may be assembled into collapsed carrier form during continuous travel thereof through a gluing and folding machine of substantially standard construction. In the first gluing operation, patches i of adhesive are applied to the upper portions of the center partition sections 45-45 and their associated lateral extensions 51-51 as shown in Fig. 1, with strip 7 of adhesive also applied to the securing flaps 49-49 associated with the cross partition sections 47- 47.
I The left handed side of the blank as shown in Fig. 1 is then folded along the aligned scores 93, 75", 75, 75, 75" and 93 to thereby place the upper portions of the center partition sections 45-45 and their associated lateral extensions 51-51 in adhesively secured relation to the adjacent end portions of the handle facing flap 56- 56 as shown in Fig. 2. This folding operation also places the cross partition section 47-47 in overlying relation to the inside face of the adjacent side panels 2-2 with the securing flaps 49-49 associated therewith in adhesively secured relation to the inside face of the adjacent side panels 2-2, thereby completing the formation of one pair of end cells. In this same folding operation, the second pair of cross partition sections 63-63 associated with the left hand side of the outer wings w-9 and w-10 are also folded to overlie the adjacent side wall liner sections 61 -61. In a substantially simultaneously executed folding operation, the cross partition sections 48-48 associated with the right hand wings w-2 and w-4 are'infolded to overlie the adjacent center partition sections 46-46 as shown in Fig. 2.

Strips l of adhesive are also applied to the securing flaps 50-50 associated with the infolded cross partition sections 48- 48', and strips m of adhesive are applied to the securing flaps 66-66 associated with the cross partition sections 64-64 at the right hand side of the blank. Additional strips n of adhesive are applied to the securing flaps 65- 65' associated with the infolded cross partition sections 63-63 at the left hand side of the blank as shown in Fig. 2.
In the second folding operation, the right hand wings are folded along the aligned scores 24-24 so as to place the glued upper portions of the center partition sections 46-46 and their associated lateral extensions 52- 52 in adhesively secured relation to the adjacent end portions of the handle facing flaps 56-56 as shown in Fig. 3. As a result of this same folding operation, the securing flaps 50-50 associated with the cross partition sections 48-48 become adhesively secured to the inside face of the adjacent side panels 2-2 to thereby complete formation of the second pair of end cells of the carrier. In substantially the same folding operation, the side wall liner sections 62-62 at the right hand side of the outer wings w-9 and w-10 are folded along the aligned transverse scores 90-90 so as to place the side wall liner sections 62-62 in overlying but unsecured relation to the adjacent cross partition sections 60-60. This same folding operation places the securing flaps 66- 66' in adhesively secured relation to the inside face of the adjacent center partition sections 58-58 thereby completing formation of a third pair of carrier cells.
In substantially the same folding operation, the cross partition sections 59-59 at the left hand sideof the outer wings w-9 and w- 10 are folded along the aligned transverse scores 89-89 so as to place the cross partition sections 59-59 in overlying relation to the adjacent center partition sections 58-58. As a result of this folding operation, the securing flaps 65-65 associated with'thepreviously infolded cross partition sections 63- 63 become adhesively secured to the inside face of the adjacent center partition sections 58-58, thereby completing formation of a fourth pair of carrier cells as defined between the cross partition Sect o 5963 and '59' 63'. As thus folded the partly assembled carrier will appear as shown in Fig. 3 and the collapsed cells associated with the outer wings w-9'and w -10 Wlll apw in eptipn as Sh OWll in Fig. 4. v I v I 'In the third gluing operation, patches 0 of adhesive 1 are applied to the upper face of the side wall liner sec'- tions 61 and 62 of the outer wing w-9 and to the upper faces of theside wall liner sections 61' and 62 of the outer wing w-10 as shown in Fig. 3. Patches of adhesive p are also applied substantially simultaneously to the upper face of the secondary handle facing flaps 57-57 as shown in Fig. 3.
In the third folding operation, the secondary handle facing flaps 57-57' and their associated outer wings w-9 and w-10 are folded along the longitudinal scores 86- 86 so as to place the secondary handle facing flap 57 in adhesively secured relation to the upper portion of the adjacent center partition sections 45 and 46 and their associated handle forming extensions 51 and 52, and also to that portion of the underlying handle facing flap 56 which is exposed between the ends of the inturned lateral extensions 51 and 52. This same folding operation results in adhesive securement of the side Wall liner sections 61 and 62 to the inside face of the side panel 2 which is exposed between the securing flap 49 of the infolded cross partition section 47 of the infolded upper wing w-l and the edge forming score 78 of the infolded upper wing w-2. Similarly, this same folding operation effects securement of the secondary handle facing flap 57' to the adjacent inturned extensions 51' and 52 and that portion of the underly handle facing flap 56 which is exposed therebetween. Additionally, the side wall liner sections 61 and 62 become adhesively secured to the exposed inside face of the side wall panel 2 as shown in Fig. 5.
In the fOUl'llh gluing operation as shown in Fig. 5,
patches q of adhesive are applied to the center divider panels 53 and 54 as they overlie the bottom panel sections 1-1 for the full length thereof and over a width which corresponds to the width of the adjacent center partition sections 45 and 46 as defined between the transverse scores -77 and 76-78. Relatively narrow strips of adhesive r are also applied to the side edge extremities of the center divider panels 53 and 54 for securement of the center divider panels to the side edges of the center partition section 58.
In the fourth folding operation, the center divider panels 53 and 54 are folded along the longitudinally extending bottom hinging scores 73 and 74 so that the center divider panel 53 will become adhesively secured to the exposed face of the adjacent center partition section 45 and the adjacent end portion of the secondary handle facing flap 57, and with the side edge of the center divider panel 53 secured to the adjacent center partition section 58 and a portion of the secondary handle facing flap 57 as shown in Fig. 6. In this same folding operation, the center divider panel 54 will also be adhesively secured to the exposed face of the adjacent center partition section 46 and to the adjacent end of the downfolded secondary handle facing flap 57, and the inner side edge thereof will become adhesively secured to the adjacent edge of the center partition section 58. When this operation has been completed as shown in Fig. 6, and the cells in both twin compartments will have been fully formed.
In the fifth gluing operation, a patch s of adhesive is applied to the upper face of the infolded secondary handle facing flap 57 and its associated center partition section 58 as shown in Fig. 6. In substantially the same operation, patches t of adhesive are applied to the exposed faces of the center partition sections 45 and 46' as shown in Fig. 6. In the fifth and final folding op eration, the partially assembled carton as shown in Fig. 6 is folded along its bottom collapsing score 21 so as to place the bottom half section 1 in overlying relation to the companion bottom half section 1 and to thereby also adhesively secure the secondary handle facing flap 57, its associated center partition section 58' and the center partition sections 45-46, into firmly secured relation posed portion of the center partition section 58, and to the exposed portion of the secondary handle facing fiap 57. This folding operation produces the Collapsed carrier as shown in Fig. 7 ready for shipment.
The collapsed carrier as shown in Fig. 7 may be readily erected by exerting pressure against the ends thereof as shown in Fig. 8. The carrier may be maintained in fully expanded position ready to receive bottles or other articles in the cells thereof by interlocking the hook portion 98" associated with the lower end of the center partition section 46 with the adjacent end of the bottom panel.
The twelvecell twin compartment carrier as shown in Figs. 9, l and 11 and formed from the blank as shown in Fig. 1 presents full height cross partitions which define six cells of substantially equal containing capacity in each of it's' twin compartments. The adjacent cross partitions 63 and 64 in one compartment of the carrier and the adjacent cross partitions 63 and 64 in the other compartment of the carrier are relatively closely spaced and are not intended for the reception of merchandise, but are provided to permit lengthening of the carrier so that it will snugly fit within a shipping case when the transverse separator panel of the shipping case has been removed. If only five partitions in each compartment are desired, it will be appreciated that one pair of sidewall liner sections 62-62 and one pair of cross partition sections, 64-64 would be eliminated, and the blank parts correspondingly shortened in length.
The twelve-cell carrier as shown in Figs. 9, and ll is sturdy and strong in construction, and presents smooth surfaced side panels 2-2 which are strengthened and reinforced by the bracing action of the adjacent side wall liner sections 61-62 and 61'62' adhesively secured thereto, and are further reinforced by the bracing action of the securing flaps 49-59 and 49-50. The center partition backbone structure extends substantially down to the erected bottom panel for the full length of the carrier and is reinforced by two pairs of center partition sections 45-45 and 46-46 at the ends of the carrier and is additionally reinforced by the paired securing fiaps 65-65 and 66-66 at the mid-section of the carrier. The handle part has a four-ply thickness throughout the length thereof, and also presents smooth outer surfaces for the reception of advertising decoration.
The carrier shown in Figs. 8 and 9 assembled from the blank shown in Fig. 1 has a length designed to snugly fit within a twenty-four bottle shipping case which normally has a separating'partition which has been removed. Consequently, the adjacent cross partition sections 63-64 and 63-64 of the carrier are spaced to provide dead space therebetween corresponding to the thickness of the separating partition.
it dead space in the carrier shown in Figs. 8 and 9 is not required, the bottom panel, 1-1, side panels 2-2, and handle forming sections 56-56 and 57-57 of the blank shown in Fig. 13 would be correspondingly shortened, and the intermediate center partition sections 58- 58' would also be shortened to a horizontal length equal to two intermediate cells only. Additionally, the intermediate cross partition sections 64-64 and associated securing flaps 66-66 would be eliminated, and the side wall liner sections 62-62 reduced in width to provide side wall securing flaps only. The blank as thus modified would be assembled, as evident to those skilled in the art, substantially in accordance with steps indicated in Figs. 2 to 7 inclusive.
It will also be appreciated that the blank shown in Fig. I can be modified Within the purview of this invention to provide a ten, eight or six bottle carrier by a corresponding shortening of the bottom panel 1-1, side panels 2-2, and handle forming sections 56-56 and 57-57, with a corresponding. reduction in the'number 8 of, or elimination of intermediate cross partition sections, as well as reduction in length or shortening of the intermediate center partition sections 58-58. I
For example, in making a ten-cell carrier, with five cells in each of the twin compartments, the intermediate center partition. sections 58-58 of the blank shown in Fig. 1 would be reduced to a length equivalent to the length of only one cell, and the intermediate sections 63-63 and 64-64 and their associated securing flaps 65-65 and 66-66 would be eliminated, and the side wall liner sections 61-61 and 62-62 would be shortened in length to provide side wall securing flaps only. The bottom panel 1-1, side panels 2-2 and handle forming sections 56-56 and 57-57 would then also be shortened approximately the length of one pair of cells, and the finger insertion holes in the handle sections would be appropriately centered.- Such a modified blank would be assembled into a ten-cell carrier substantially in accordance with the steps indicated in Figs. 2 to 7 inclusive, as is evident to those skilled in the art.
To provide a sixcell carrier, the entire outer wings w-9 and w-ltl of the blank shown in Fig. 1 would be eliminated, leaving only the handle forming sections 56-56. In such a six-cell carrier, all of the cross partitions necessary would be associated with the top wings 111-1 and w-2 and bottom wings w-3 and w-4, Such a six-cell carrier forming blank would be assembled by following the step procedures indicated in Figs. 2 to 7 inclusive, simplified as a result of the elimination of the outer wings w-9 and w-10 from the blank shown in Fig. 1.
While the blank shown in Fig. 1 is particularly designed for the low-cost assembly of twelve-cell carriers, it will be appreciated that ten, eight and six-cell carriers may be assembled by reducing of the size of these blanks and eliminating certain portions thereof as heretofore indicated.
While certain novel features of this invention have been disclosed herein and are pointed out in the claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A multi-cell twin compartmented article carrier formed from a single blank of sheet material including a bottom panel presenting a pair of foldably connected bottom sections, a pair of side panels foldably connected to the opposite side edges of the bottom panel, a pair of end panel sections at each end of the carrier integrally hinged to the adjacent end edges of the side panels, an end center partition section integrally hinged to each of the four end panel sections and extending inwardly between said side panels, a first pair of upfolded intermediate center partition sections and a second pair of downfolded intermediate center partition sections secured together with said end center partition sections, each of said upfolded intermediate center partition sections extending inwardly from the adjacent end panel Sections a distance less than half the length of the carrier to thereby provide a gap between the opposed free ends of said upfolded intermediate center partition sections, said downfolded intermediate center partition sections overlapping said upfolded intermediate center partition sections to form therewith a center partition structure extending the full length of the carrier, a series of cross partition sections respectively integrally hinged at one vertical edge thereof to each of said four end center partition sections and to each of said two downfolded intermediate center partition sections and foldably connected at the other vertical edge thereof to the inside face of the adjacent side panel, and a pair of downfolded handle forming sections having aligned finger insertion holes therein extending substantially the full length of thecarrier and integrally connected along the top edges thereof,- said handle forming sections being integrally hinged to an upwardly projecting vertical edge of the adjacent end center partition sections.
2. A multi-cell twin compartmented article carrier formed from a single blank of sheet material including a bottom panel presenting a pair of foldably connected bottom sections, a pair of side panels foldably connected to the opposite side edges of the bottom panel, a pair of end panel sections at each end of the carrier integrally hinged to the adjacent end edges of the side panels, an end center partition section integrally hinged to each of the four end panel sections and extending inwardly between said side panels, a first pair of upfolded intermediate center partition sections and a second pair of downfolded intermediate center partition sections secured together with said end center partition sections, each of said unfolded intermediate center partition sections extending inwardly from the adjacent end panel Sections a distance less than half the length of the carrier to thereby provide a gap between the opposed free ends of said upfolded intermediate center partition sections, said downfolded intermediate center partition sections overlapping said upfolded intermediate center partition sections to form therewith a center partition structure extending the full length of the carrier, a handle part for the carrier which includes a pair of handle forming flaps integral with two of said end center partition sections and projecting above the side panels, said handle forming flaps having aligned finger insertion holes therein and integrally connected along the top edges thereof to the adjacent handle facing flaps, each of said handle forming flaps being secured to the adjacent upper portion of said end center partition sections, and a series of cross partition sections respectively integrally hinged at one vertical edge thereof to each of said four end center partition sections and to each of said two downfolded intermediate center partiiton Sections and foldably connected at the other vertical edge thereof and secured to the inside face of the adjacent side panel.
' 3. A multi-cell twin compartmented article carrier formed from a single blank of sheet material including a bottom panel, a pair of side panels foldably connected to the opposite side edges of the bottom panel, a pair of end panel sections at each end of the carrier integrally hinged to the adjacent end edges of the side panels, and a partitioning and handle forming structure defining the twin compartments and the cells of the carrier, said partitioning and handle forming structure including an end center partition section integrally hinged to each of the four end panel sections and extending inwardly between said side panels, a cross partition section integrally hinged to each of said end center partition sections and having an-attaching flap integrally hinged thereto and secured to the inside face of adjacent side panel, each of said end center partition sections having a handle forming portion extending inwardly of the carrier in overhanging relation to its associated cross partition section, a pair of first intermediate center partition sections integrally hinged to the lower end of two of said end center partition sections, one at either end of the carrier, and sandwiched between the adjacent end center partition sections and extending inwardly from the adjacent end panel sections a distance less than half the length of the carrier to thereby provide a gap between the opposed free ends of said intermediate center partition sections, a pair of handle facing flaps extending substantially the full length of the carrier each integrally hinged at one end thereof to an upwardly projecting edge of an adjacent end center partition section, a pair of downfolded handle sections each integrally hinged to the top edge of the adjacent handle facing flap and having the end portions thereof sandwiched between the inturned handle portions of said end center partition sections, and a secondary intermediate center partition section formed integrally with and extending downwardly from each of said downfolded handle sections and spanning the gap between the opposed free ends of said first pair of intermediate center partition sections.
4. .A multi-cell twin compartmented article carrier formed from a single blank of sheet material including a bottom panel, a pair of side panels foldably connected to the opposite side edges of the bottom panel, a pair of end panel sections at each end of the carrier integrally hinged to the adjacent end edges of the side panels, and a partitioning and handle forming structure defining the twin compartments and the cells of the carrier, said partitioning and handle forming structure including an end center partition section integrally hinged to each of the four end panel sections and extending inwardly between said side panels, an end cross partition section integrally hinged to each of said end center partition sections and having an attaching flap integrally hinged thereto and secured to the inside face of the adjacent side panel, each of said end center partition sections having a handle forming portion extending inwardly of the carrier in overhanging relation to its associated cross partition section, a pair of first intermediate center partition sections integrally hinged to the lower end of two of said end center partition sections, one at either end of the carrier, and sandwiched between the adjacent end center partition sections and extending inwardly from the adjacent end panel sections a distance less than half the length of the carrier to thereby provide a gap between the opposed free ends of said intermediate center partition sections, a pair of handle facing flaps extending substantially the full length of the carrier each integrally hinged at one end thereof to an upwardly projecting edge of an adjacent end center partition section, a pair of downfolded handle sections each integrally hinged to the top edge of the adjacent handle facing flap and having the end portions thereof sandwiched between the inturned handle portions of said end center partition sections, a second pair of intermediate center partition sections formed integrally with and extending downwardly from said downfolded handle sections and spanning the gap between the opposed free ends of said first pair of intermediate center partition sections, and a pair of intermediate cross partition sections integrally hinged to the opposite side edges of each of said secondary center partition sections and foldably connected to the inside face of the adjacent side panel.
5. A multi-cell twin compartmented article carrier formed from a single blank of sheet material including a bottom panel, a pair of side panels foldably connected to the opposite side edges of the bottom panel, a pair of end panel sections at each end of the carrier integrally hinged to the adjacent end edges of the side panels, and a partitioning and handle forming structure defining the twin compartments and the cells of the carrier, said partitioning and handle forming structure including an end center partition section integrally hinged to each of the four end panel sections and extending inwardly between said side panels, an end cross partition section integrally hinged to each of said end center partition sections and having an attaching flap integrally hinged thereto and secured to the inside face of the adjacent side panel, each of said end center partition sections having a handle forming portion extending inwardly of the carrier in overhanging relation to its associated cross partition section, a pair of first intermediate center partition sections integrally hinged to the lower end of two of said end center partition sections, one at either end of the carrier, and sandwiched between the adjacent end center partition sections and extending inwardly from the adjacent end panel sections a distance less than half the length of the carrier to thereby provide a gap between the opposed free ends of said intermediate center partition sections, a pair of handle facing flaps extending substantially the full length of the carrier each integrally hinged at one 7 hereof to an 't'lpv vai'dly projecting edge of an adjacent end center partitionsect'ion, a pair of downfolded handle sections each integrally hinged to the top edge of the adjacent handle facing flap and having the end portions thereof sandwiched between the inturned handle portions of's aid end center partition sections, asecond pair of intermediate center partition sections formed integ'r'ally with and extending downwardly from said downfolded handle sections and spanning the gap between the opposed free ends of said first pair of intermediate center partition sections, a first pair of intermediate cross partition sections integrally hinged to the opposite side edges of each of said second intermediate center partition sections, a side wall liner section integrally hinged to each of said intermediate cross partition sections, a secbna intermediate cross partition section integrally hinged to each of said side wall liner sections, and an attaching flap integrally hinged to eachof said second ary intermediate cross partition sections and secured to the inside face of the adjacent second intermediate center partition section. A one-piece blank'desi'gned to form a multicell twin compartmented article carrier including'a bottom panel, a pair of side panels foldably connectedto the opposite side edges of the bottom panel, an end panel section integrally hinged to each end edge of both side panels, an ehdcente'r partition section integrally hinged to each of the four end panel sections, a cross partition section integrally hinged to each of said end center partition sections, a first pair of intermediate center partition sections captured from material between each pair of adjacent end center partition sections and integrally hinged to a lower end of one of the adjacent end center partition sections, each of said intermediate center partition sections having a longitudinal extent less than one half the length of the bottom panel, each of said end center partition sections having a handle portion projecting above the top edge of the adjacent side panel and overhanging its associated cross partition section, a pair of handle facing flaps with finger insertion holes therein having a length substantially equal to the adjacent side panel, each of said handle facing flaps being integrally hinged at one end thereof to a vertical edge of an adjacent handle portion but otherwise substantially separated from the adjacent end panel section and side panel, a handle forming section integrally hinged along a longitudinally extending score to each of said handle facing flaps, a second pair "of intermediate center partitions sections projecting fi" said handle sections, and a pair of intermediate cross partition sections integrally hinged to the opposite end edges of each of said second pair of intermediate center partition sections, said end center partition sections, first pair of intermediate center partition sections and second pair of intermediate center partition sections 12 together providing'a continuous center partition structure extending the full length of the carrier as assembled from said blank.
7. A one-piece blank designed to form a multi-cell twin compartmented article carrier including a bottom panel, a pair of side panels foldably connected to the opposite side edges of the bottom panel, an end panel section integrally hinged to each end edge of both side panels, an end center partition section integrally hinged to each of the four cnd panel sections, a cross partition section integrally hinged to each of said end center partition sections, a first pair of intermediate center partition sections captured from material between each pair of adjacent end center partition sections and integrally hinged to a lower end of one of the adjacent end center partition seflions, each of said intermediate center partition sections having a longitudinal extent less than one half the length of the bottom panel, each of said end center partition sections having a handle portion projecting above the top edge of the adjacent side panel and overhanging its associated cross partition section, a pair of handle fac ing flaps with finger insertion holes therein having a length substantially equal to the adjacent side panel, each of said handle facing flaps being integrally hinged at one end thereof to a vertical edge of an adjacent handle portion but otherwise substantially separated from the adjacent end panel section and side panel, a handle section integrally hinged along a longitudinally extending score to each of said handle facing flaps, a second pair of intermediate center partition sections projecting from said handle sections, a pair of intermediate cross partition sections integrally hinged to the opposite end edges of each of said second pair of intermediate center partition sections, a side wall liner section integrally hinged to each of said intermediate cross partition sections, a second intermediatecro'ss partition section integrally hinged to each of said side wall liner sections, and a securing flap integrally hinged to each of said second intermediate crosspartition sections, said end center partition sections, first pair of intermediate center partition sections and second pair of intermediate center partition sections together providing a continuous center partition structure extending th'e'full length of the carrier as assembled from said blank.
