z claims. (ci. s- 155) This invention relates to an adapter for pump cylinders whereby to increase the output without increasing the power.
In reciprocating pumps, particularly of the windmill type, the output of the pump is limited by the power required to raise the column of water which is above the pumping cylinder. Where the diameter of the casing or pipe above the cylinder is increased, the cost of the larger size pipe is increased, and the additional weight of the larger column of water places an added burden on the pump, with the result that the volume decreases in inverse ratio. It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide an adapter assembly for mounting in a well casing which will by reducing the diameter of the pipe size thereby reducing the weight of the water column thus tend to lessen the wind velocity lrequired to raise a given amount of water in a given time. As illustrative, in a-power plant consisting solely of the conventional type of farm or ranch type windmill operated solely by wind pressure, in a deep well using for example three inch tubing and pump rods the water load carried by the reciprocating pump rod in a hundred feet in three inch tubing is approximately three hundred and twenty one pounds of water weight load. Employing the adapter and substituting two inch tubing using the same rods, the water weight load will be approximately one hundred and sixty four pounds water weight, so that if the wind velocity remains the same the reciprocation of the pump rod will be increased approximately ifty percent by virtue of the diminished water weight load. Therefore a greater volume of water will be raised in a given time than is possible for a given wind velocity without the use of the adapter.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pump cylinder adapter which can be manufactured at substantially less expense than is required Where the diameter of the pipe is increased.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

An apertured plate 18 having a' central guid'o'pening 19 is secured at the upper end of the cylinder 10 and the plate 18 is formed with a plurality of openings 20 about the opening 19, whereby water moved upwardly in the cylinder 10 with upward movement of the plunger tapering guide member 25 is threaded into'the lower i end of tubular member 21 and a tubular guide bar 26 extends loosely through the guide member 25. The guide bar 26 has a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs 27 which slidably engage the lower small end of guide 25 and the ribs 27 form reduced water passages= 28, whereby the velocity of the outwardly moving water will be increased from casing 16 as the water enters the lower end of the tube 24. The lower end of the guide bar 26 is formed with an annular collar 29 which produces a shoulder or keeper 30. 'Ihe lower end of the collar 29 is provided with a frusta-conical opening 31 so as to facilitate the initial projection of the pointed outer end 32 of plunger rod 15 into the guide bar 26. The plunger rod 15 has secured thereto a pair of resilient coupling hooks 37 which are secured to a collar or sleeve 34 and the collar or sleeve 34 is secured by fastening means 35 to the plunger rod 15. The bills 36 of the hooks 37 are adapted to engage on the shoulder 30 when the gide bar 26 is lowered and point 32 extends loosely and upwardly into the lower end of guide bar 26. A spring 33 is disposed about the rod 15 between the hooks 37 and is adapted upon engagement of the bills 36 with the shoulder 30 to hold the guide bar 26 locked with respect to the plunger rod 15.
The upper end of the guide bar 26 is connected to a sucker rod or operator 38 by means of a coupling sleeve 39 which is threaded onto the externally threaded upper end 40 of guide bar 26.
With an adapter as hereinbefore described, when the plunger 14 is reciprocated within the cylinder 10 and is on its upper stroke thereby lifting the column of water in casing 16, tubular member 21 and tube 24, the force of the ow of water will be increased and the greater volume of water may be lifted in a given time than would be the case where the column of water is at a diameter equal to the interior diameter of casing 16 or of cylinder 10. This is accomplished by reducing the diameter of the water column above the casing 16 and providing for the jet lifting of the water column through reduction in the passages formed between the guide 2S and the guide bar 26. It has been found from experience that an adapter of thiskind will increase the capacity of a pump without requiring an ncrease in power.
