SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,758, dated January 8,- 1884.
I Application filed August 22, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS MAYEs, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved W'ave-Power, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, strong, and effective apparatus for utilizing the action of the waves for the transmission of motive power.
The invention includes special constructions and combinations of parts of the apparatus, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section line as a", Fig. 2, of my improved wave-power as applied to use for working a pump; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section on the line y y, Fig. 1.
I provideasubstantial framework, of wood or metal, or both combined, and make said frame to consist, preferably, of the inverted- V-shaped sides a, set strongly into any suit able base or foundation, 1), the sides being tied together at the top by the cross bar or plate 0, as shown. The bar 0 has any suitable strong staples or eyebolts, d, firmly fixed in its lower side, or to project therefrom, so as to form bearings for the bars or plates 6, fixed firmly to the sides of a heavy platform or dash-board, f, which is thus suspended by the eyebolts d and plates 6, so as to swing freely back and forth as it shall be acted on by the waves or breakers.
The dash-board f may consist of a couple of layers of plank nailed closely to each other, which construction would serve well in a gentle or comparativelyquiet surf; but to provide for a smooth action of the apparatus and a full utilization of the momentum of the dash-board in a heavy surf, I propose to make the dash-board f in hollow box form, as shown in the drawings, and to fill it inside more or less with sand, stone, or other heavy material, 9, so as to receive and withstand the shocks of the waves better; or I may make the dash-board of a solid slab or plate of stone or metal, of suitable area and weight, if preferred.
In practice it is intended that the fastenings of the dash -board to the cross -bar 0 and of the machinery connections to the dashboard shall be such as will admit of easy and quick substitution of a heavy for a light dashboard, or vice versa, as the state of the water shall require.
It is evident that various devices may be employed for transmitting the power from the swinging daslrboard. f to various forms or kinds of machinery. In the example shown a double connecting-rod, h'h, connects, by a cross-bar, i, and staples or bands k, with the dash-board, the other end of rod h h connecting pivotally with the plunger-rod Z of a pump, m, which is secured, by staples n or other suitable fastenings, to the base b, said pump at having inlet and discharge pipe connections 0 12, respectively, which may lead to and from any places desired.
The connectingrod h h of the dash-board may engage at its outer end with a crank, which in turn may connect by any approved system of gear-wheels or belt-pulleys to drive connected machinery at points more or less distant from the shore.
The connecting-rod may consist of a single rod or bar, h, if preferred; and the base I) will have any suitable form for securing its firm anchorage to a sandy or rocky shore, as may be required.
In operation the power apparatus will be anchored firmly in place to receive the impact of the waves upon the dash-board f, which will thereby be swung for operating the machinery connected with it by rod h h, as will readily be understood.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to actuate pumps or other machines by wavepower or to swing a pendulum by the motion of the waves; but
WVhat I do claim as new and of my invention is A wave-power consisting of a frame, a b c, and a dash-board, f, suspended from bar 0, and having a connecting-rod, h, for imparting motion either directly or by a crank to connected machinery,substantially as shown and described THOMAS MAYES.
