(Cl. 164-41) This invention relates to a devicel for severing strip material in a strip winding machine and having a safety guard for protecting the cutting blade when it is not in use.
An object of the present invention is to provide a strip severing device having safety means for guarding the cutting blade thereof when it is not being used.
A device illustrating certain features of the invention las applied to a strip winding machine may include a cutting blade mounted on a pivoted ar-m which is yieldably urged to a normal retracted position and serves to guide the blade into a strip to be severed. The cutting blade is mounted for limited movement on the arm and is yieldably held in a normal first position in which the cutting edge thereof is protected by a guard carried by the arm, and the blade is movable on the arm -to a second position with the cutting edge in advance of the guard. When the strip has been wound and is to be severed, a handle on the cutter is depressed which first moves the cutting blade from its rst position to its second position on the arm to expose the cutting edge f the blade and then carries the arm along as -the blade is guided thereby into the strip to sever it.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description and the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof7 in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a capacitor windoing machine with the strip cutting device applied theret0;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of Fig. 1 showing the present strip cutting device in normal retracted position;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the strip cutting device; and
Fig. 4 is Aan enlarged vertical sectional view showing the strip cutting device in its operative cutting position.
Referring to 'the drawings, the strip cutting device 10 is shown applied to a machine 12 for winding capacitors in which one or more strips or webs 13 of rnetallized paper from supply reels (not shown) pass over a guide roller 14 and are wound onto a winding arbor 16 of the machine. The roller 14 is rotatably supported on a shaft 17 which is secured to a frame 18 of the machine.
lThe strip severing device comprises a cutting blade 20 having -a V-shaped cutting edge 21 as viewed in Fig. 3 which may be serrated, if desired, to facilitate the cutting of the strips =13. The blade 20 has a bar 23 secured to the upper portion thereof and is mounted on a carrier member 25 which guides it into engagement with the strip 1'3 to sever it. The carrier member 25 is secured .to a rod 26 on an arm 27 which is pivotally supported on the shaft 17. A spring 28 yieldably holds the arm 27 in a normal inoperative or raised position against a stop 29 with the strip cutting device 10 above the strip 13 as shown in Fig. 2.
Safety means are provided to protect an operators hands against injury from contact with the cutting edge 2,911,043 Patented Nov. 3, 1959 iceof the blade 20 when the blade is in its inoperative position (Fig. 1). This safety means comprises a guard '30 secured to the carrier member 25 and positioned parallel and adjacent to the cutting blade 10. The guard 30 has a lower V-shaped protective edge 3-1 conforming to the cutting edge 21 of the blade 20. A pair of links 32'and 33 pivotally connected to the bar 23 and to the carrier member 2S `at each end thereof, serve to connect the blade 20 to the carrier member for limited movement relative thereto from a normal irst or protected position (Fig. 1) with the cutting edge 21 disposed above and protected by the edge 31 of the guard 30 to a second position on the carrier with Ithe cutting edge 21 in advance of the guard and in condition to sever ,the strip (Fig. 4). The links 32 and 33 maintain the blade 20 in parallel relation to the guard 31, the lower links 33 being secured to a rod 34 which is oscillatably supported in the carrier member 215. A handle 36 is secured to the upper face of the bar 23 and has a portion 37 engageable with the top portionof the carrier member 25 to stop the movement of the blade 20 relative to the carrier member in its second position. A spring 39 disposed in a recess in the carrier member 25 engages the portion '37 of the handle 36 and unges the cutting blade 20 to its normal first position in which it is stopped by a stop member 40. This stop member is secured to the carrier member 2-5 and engages the handle portion 37.
When a capacitor has been wound on the arbor 16 and the strip 13 is to be severed, the operator presses the handle 36 downwardly which first imparts movement to the cutting blade 20 while the carrier member 25 is being yieldably held in its normal raised position and causes the cutting edge 21 of the blade 20 to be moved into a cutting position in advance of the protective edge 31 of the guard 30 when the handle portion 37 engages the carrier member 25 and moves it and the arm 27 together with the blade 20 until the cutting edge 21 of the blade engages and severs the strip 13. As the pressure is released from the handle 36 the arm 27 is returned to its upper position by the spring 28 after which the weaker spring 39 moves the blade 20 to its retracted first position wtih the cutting edge 21 thereof protected by the guard l31.
It is to be understood that the above-described arrangements are simply illustrative of the application of the principles of this invention. Numerous other arrangements may be readily devised by those skilled in the art which will embody the principles of the invention and fall within the spirit and scope thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. In a strip severing device, a cutter having a cutting edge for cutting a strip, a supporting member, a guard yfixed to said supporting member, means including parallel motion linkage interconnecting the cutter and the supporting member for guiding the cutter for limited movement relative to the supporting member to a rst position with the cutting edge of the cutter protected by the guard and to a cutting position with the cutting edge in advance of the guard, means for yieldably maintaining the cutter in the first position, means mounting the supporting member for movement along a predetermined path to guide the cutter `into the strip, resilient means for moving the supporting member to a normal retracted position, and means attached to the cutter for moving the cutter and the supporting member to cut the strip.
2. ln a strip winding machine, a device for severing the strip comprising a cutter having a sharp cutting edge for severing a strip, a carrier member, a guard fixed to the carrier member, a plurality of links connecting the cutter to the carrier member for limited movement relative thereto to a first position with the cutting edge protected by Vthe guard and to a second position with the cutting edge in advance of the guard, means for yieldably maintaining the cutting blade in the first position, an arm on the carrier member, means supporting the arm for pivotal movement to guide the carrier member along a predetermined path toward andV from the strip, resilient means for moving the arm to a normal retractedposition, and a handle on the cutter for moving it and the carrier to sever the strip.
3. In a strip winding machine, a device for severing the strip comprising a cutter having a sharp cutting edge, a carrier member, a guard on the carrier for the cutter, a plurality of links connecting the cutter to the carrier for limited movement relative thereto, a handle on the cutter for moving it into the strip, said handle having a portion engageable with the carrier member to limit the movement of the cutter relative to the carrier to a cutting position lwith the cutting edge of the cutter in advance of the 4 l guard, a spring on the carrier member engaging the handle portion for moving the cutter to a normal rst position with the cutting edge of the cutter protected by the guard, means on the carrier member engageable with the handle member for stopping the cutter in the said rst position, means for mounting the carrier for movement along a predetermined path to guide the, cutter to and from the strip, and means for moving the carrier to and yieldably maintaining it in a normal retracted position with the cutter spaced from the strip.
