SPECIFICATION forming partv of Letters Patent No. 290,476, dated December 18, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN R. ROBERTSON, of Selma, in the county of Dallas and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it,

being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure I is a perspective 'view of a replace provided with my improved grate. Fig. 2- is a side view of the grate removed from'the fire-place. Fig. 3 isa vertical section of the grate. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective detail views of the adjustable wings, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section of the grate.

lvIy invention has relation to grates for open fire-places; and it consists in the improved construction andcombination of parts of a to any size desired by means of two r/emOI/:ablevand adjustableide pieces, and which is provided with an ash-receptacle, thus combining the advantages of a stove and an' open grate into one, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed. K

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the front grate, and Bfthe bottom grate, of a basket-grate having two uprights, C, supporting lthe frontv grate, and two uprights, D, supporting the rear end of the bottom grate, the said uprights standing, one pair C D at each side of the grate, connected at their upper ends by means of two crosspiec-es, E. The rear uprights, D, are connected by and support a'plate, F, forming a reback, which is provided upon the inner surface with two or more brackets, G, which keep the saine at adistance from the back of the fire-place, forming an air-space between the' same and the lire-back, through which air :may pass and become heated, and pass out into the room through suitable openings in the front wall of the hre-place, the brackets at the same time supporting the fire-back. A perforated plate, H, having its lower portion forming a hinged flap or door, I, covers the space at the front of the lire-place, between the bottom or loor ofthe same and the bottom grate, and is fastened to two Vupright plates or side pieces, J, having rearwardly extending ways orV slides K a short distance below the bottom grate, in which the ends of a supplementary grate, L, rest and slide. In the space below this grate is placed a drawer or ash-receptacle, ld, to which access may be had, and which may be slid in or out through ythe opening covered by the hinged door I.

N N are two inclined wings or plates,which are of the saine width as the depth ofthe grate, and are provided with iianges O at their lower ends, with which they rest upon the bottom grate-bars, and with horizontallyrextending plates P upon their upper ends, upon which- ,slide two plates, Q, resting with their outer lfront plate, H, will allow the draft to pass up through the bottom ot the grate, while the ashes and cinders will drop through the grate and the supplementary grate into the ash receptacle or drawer.

In Fig. 5 is shown a slight inodiiication of which consists in slotting plates Q longitudinally, as shown at T, through which slots pass turn-buttons U, the slots sliding up on the Shanks of the turn-buttons, and the latter allowing the plates or extensions to be removed when desired. In this manner any basketgrate of the usual constru ction may be changed to combine all the advantages of a stove, as far as regards saving in fuel and cleanliness in collecting the cinders and ashes, with the pleasant appearance and superior Ventilating qualities of an open fire-place, by adding the features herein described to the same.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The inclined wings or plates N, having horizontally-extending plates I upon their upper edges, and iianges O upon their lower edges, and adapted to be placed in a basketgrate, resting with their lower flanged ends upon the bottom of the grate, and with the edges of the upper plates upon the sides of the grate, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

2. The wings or plates N, having horizontally-extending plates l? upon their upper edges, provided with downward-bent flanges S upon their sides and anges O upon their lower edges, in combination with the sliding extensions Q, having inward-bent arms R extending inward under plates P from the outer edges of the extensions, said wings and extensions adapted to be placed in a basket-A grate, resting with their lower ends npon the bottom of the grate, and with the ends of the adjustable extensions upon the sides of the grate, as and for the purpose shown and set orth.

3. The combination of the perforated front plate, H, having hinged door I at its lower edge, and side pieces, J, forming ways or slides K, supplementary grate L, and ashdrawer M, all adapted to be placed under a basket-grate in the space between the bottom of the same and the floor, as and for the purpose shown Vand set forth.

4. As an improvement in fire-grates, the arrangement, as described, of the basketgrate A B, having uprights C D and fire-back F, inclined plates N, having top plates, P, and adjustable extensions Q, perforated front plate, H, hinged door I, side pieces, J, forming ways K, supplementary grate L, and ashdrawer M, all constructed and combined as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
