Heretofore, intake manifold Ygaskets vand tappet chamber covers and the gaskets therefor, for use-on-V- engines --were individually produced and individually` assembledon the engine. Such individual production and assembly inherently :results in increased machinery and labor costs which is .to be` a'voided in competitive industry. Thesep- Varate structureon the engine required for the mounting of manifold gaskets and tappet chamber covers and gaskets vdid notheretofore utilize the intake manifold mounting surfaces of the heads which, it has been discovered, `pro- `vides a convenient and adequate surface for the attachment of the tappet chamber cover'to the engine and Velimi- '1 nates the-need for side anges on-the engine for mounting said cover. Furthermore, it has been discovered that by castingorY machining, the upper portions ofthe end walls lof the engine block yand the intake manifold mounting surfaces of the heads into a substantially continuous mounting wall the aforementioned combined structure could be readily lmade to lit on said continuous Wall and be :clamped thereto to'simultaneously provide intake manifold gaskets and a tappet chamber cover for said engine. An object of this invention is to provide an `integral structurecapable of being produced by a single stamping `operation and which can adequately serve as .intake vmanifold gaskets and a tappet chamber-cover for a V-engine. Another object is to eliminate theneed for separate Uintake manifold gaskets and tappet chamber covers and the gaskets for said covers.
Another object is to combine engine block and engine head structure to provide a substantially continuous vmounting Wall for the unitary structure of intake manivfold gaskets and a tappet chamber cover.
. Further objects and advantages will become apparent with reference to the following drawings and description, in-which:
FIGURE l represents a top elevational view of the unitary structure of intake manifold lgaskets and tappet -of aV-engineshowing the intake manifold and .combined vstructureof intake manifold gaskets .andtappet chamber cover in place; `FIGURE 7 represents a sectional longitudinalview of the V-engine of FIGURE 6 with the intake manifold re- ,Unitedl States ICC Y Y .2 l moved taken along rline 7-7 of FIGUREtSCin;the,.dire`c :tion of thearrows; and
FIGURE 8 is an end view of the assembled V-engine :with .the .intakemanifold and .the unitary struc'stui'le of yintake manifold gasket and `tappet chambercoverin posi- -manifold 24, vand apertures 18 are located to coincide with hot spot crossover conduits 22 of intakemanifold '24 (seeFIGURE 6). :Aperturas 16 and 18.a1so correspond in position to kconduits 21 and .23 respectively in heads 26 of a V-engine 28. An air .coolant chamber.27 for exhaust passage 23 which connects to `hot lspot crossover conduit 22 partially surrounds conduit 23 in each of said heads 26. `Encircling each of the aperturesl and18 and manifold clamping .bolt .apertures 32 in intake manifold gaskets 12 is a bead 30 raised from the. upper surface of structure 10 and extending continuouslyr around the entire periphery of said structure adjacent thefouter edge thereof.
End flanges l34 integral with the opposite upturned ends 35 of cover 14 and extending vat an` angle .therefrom-,are provided with clamping bolt apertures 36. Clamping bars 40 .having clamping bolt apertures 41 therein corresponding in position to apertures 36 in endflanges 34 are. adapted to beV mounted on said end flanges as shownin FIGURE 5. Support walls 38- integral with block .33 of V-.engine 28 and spanning the cylinder banks 50I and. 52 .of .said engine are provided with threaded clamping bolt receiving apertures 31 which correspond in position to the clamping bolt apertures of end anges 34 and. clamping bars 40. In the assembled condition -shown in FIGURESS and 8, clamping bars 40 are mounted on endilanges 34 whichflanges are mounted on walls 38. This assembly is secured to support walls 38 by bolts .4Z-which bolts pass through the aligned apertures-41 and,36 andere threadably secured in apertures 131 in Walls 38.
As shown in the broken awayportion of the. gasket of FIGURE 5, the upper portions of the end walls of engine 28 forming support walls 38 andthe intake manifold mounting walls 39 of heads 216 formI a continuousmounting surface upon which the unitary structure 10 is mounted. Suppont walls 38 and intake manifold .mounting Walls 39 also denne the perimeter of the ,opening `through the block leading into the tappet chamber 37- shown in FIGURE 5.
