Description

June 20, 1961 w. BASS soIL PIPE EXTENSION Filed oct. 5, 1958 iii..
INVENToR. Wzl/1am B066 59s \\\\\\\llllll E., 1.... elli 1 United States .Patent 2,989,323 SOIL PIPE EXTENSION William Bass, 835 MacVicar, Topeka, Kans. Filed Oct. 3, 1958, Ser. No. 765,188 1 claim. `(c1. ass-42) This invention 'relates to a soil pipe extension, and more particularly to an extendable unit insertable in a soil pipe for adjustment of the length of the 'pipe should `one section become broken.
The `soil vpipes ordinarily used in a building are comprised of a plurality of sections tightly Iiitted together, 'and are usually of considerable length with a single soil pipe extending through a plurality of floors of the building. lt is common for `buildings to settle, sometimes to the extent that the soil pipes therein break or become defective which necessitates replacement of the defective section. Also, because of changes in occupancy or other reasons, it is desirable to add additional toilet facilities which must be communicated with the soil pipe and thereby requires that a T-section or the like replace one of the ordinary straight sections. To make such repairs or additions is often extremely diiiicult because of the necessarily tight fit the sections must be in, and it is normally necessary to loosen a large number of pipes and then force the same back into position with the new section, and where a T-section of shorter length than the normal straight section is inserted, the repair is even more difficult.
The principal objects of the present invention are to provide a soil pipe extension member composed of two sections in threaded relation for freely telescoping the sections into a tight fit to adjust the sections to a desired length without replacement of a new section; to provide an enlarged end or bell for receiving the end of another section; to provide means on one section to permit substantial adjustment of the sections without reducing the eiective diameter of the pipe; to provide means adjustably engaging one section to hold the same and to provide a base for caulking material used as sealing means; to provide the remote ends of the adjustable sections with the ordinary engageable portions for having the extendable sections fit in the normal relation with the adjacent soil pipe sections; and to provide a soil pipe extension which is economical to manufacture and simple to use.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of a soil pipe having an extendable section therein.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken on a line 2-2, FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on a line 3 3, FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal cross sectional view of a modified form of my invention.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a soil pipe comprised of a plurality of sections 2, with each section having a hub or bell 3 at one end for receiving an annular flange 4 on the bottom end of the next succeeding section. As is the cornmon practice, the pipe section walls 5 each are in spaced relation to the walls of the bell to define a space 6 which is iilled with caulking material 7 such as lead or the like to insure a fluid and gas-tight seal between the sections.
The extendable unit 8 is composed of a male section 9 and a female section y10, with the upper end of the male section having an ordinary hub or bell 11 which is substantially identical with the bell 3, and the bottom ice end of the female section 1'0 has a diameter which is the same as the ordinary section 2 with ian annular ange '12 at the bottom end thereof which is substantially id'e'n- 'tical to the annular flange l4. The lower portion of the male section 9 k-is preferably cylindrical and of the `s'arne internal diameter as the ordinary section 2, and has external threads 13 on a substantial portion thereof to permit large variations in the extension of the unit 8, as hereinafter described.
The female section 10 has an enlarged hub portion A14 which extends longitudinally of the section a substantial distance, preferably a`t least a distance correspondling to the threaded portion 13 of the male section 9, and has a tapered portion 15 .at the bottom of the enlarged -hub 1'4 with 'the portion below the tapered por- 'tion v"15 having an `internal diameter substantially the same as the internal diameter of the section 2. An annular rib 16 is formed integrally with the internal walls of the enlarged hub 14 about midway thereof. The annular rib 16 is preferably spaced from the top edge 17 of the female section 10 a distance corresponding to the tapered portion 18 of the ordinary hub 3 and is threaded as indicated at 19 to receive the threaded lower end portion 13 of the male section 9.
Where a section of ordinary soil pipe 2 has been broken or become defective, the remainder of the section is removed and the male and female sections 9 and 10 respectively are rotated until the unit 8 is in contracted relation. The unit 8 is then set into the Ihub 3 of the lower section 2 with the annular ange 12 engaging in the hub 3 in the usual manner. The female section 10 is then held in place, and the male section 9 is rotated to extend the same until the tapered portion 18 of the hub 11 engages the annular flange 4 of the upper section 2. The hubs 3 and 11 respectively are packed with caulking material such as lead 7, and the enlarged hub 14 of the male section 10 is also packed with the caulking material 7, with the annular rib 16 forming a base therefor, which makes the soil pipe 1 fluid and gas-tight.
FIG. 4 discloses a modified form of my invention wherein the male and female members are substantially identical except for the structure which receives the threaded portion 13 of the male section 9. The female section 10 has a longitudinally elongate hub 2.0l of substantially the same length and diameter as the hub 14 heretofore described, and has an annular, narrow, inwardly extending rib 21 with a smooth bore 22 of larger diameter than the threaded portion 9 and formed integrally with the interior surface of the hub wall to forma seat for a loose narrow ring 24 having a threaded bore 25 corresponding with the external threads 13 of the male section 9. The ring 24 has a diameter substantially the same as the internal diameter of the hub 20 whereby the ring 24 is slidable in close relation to the interior walls of the hub 20 above the annular rib 21. The annular rib 21 is spaced below the top edge 23 of the hub 20 substantially the same distance as the rib 16 is spaced below the top edge 17, as shown in FIG. 2, whereby caulking material 7 may be packed in the upper end of the hub 20 to seal the male and female members in fluid and gastight relation. The hub 20 has a threaded bore 26 to receive a set screw or the like 27 in radial alignment with the ring 24 for securing the ring in position.
In using the modified form of my invention, the procedure is substantially the same as heretofore described, but with the modified structure, the ring 24 may be adjusted on a threaded portion 13 before combining the two sections, and upon securing the ring 24 against rotation by tightening the set screw 27 the male section may be rotated to extend the sectionsl as desired.
It is to be understood that while I have illustrated and described certain forms of my invention, it is not to be limited to the specific forms or arrangements of parts herein described and shown except insofar as such limitations are included in the claim.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A soil pipe extension for insertion between two sections of pipe comprising, a female section and a male section, said female section having an elongated bell portion including a narrow internal inwardly extending annular rib about midway thereof, said male section having an elongated externally threaded portion of substantially the same length as said bell portion, said rib having an inside diameter smaller than the inside diameter of said bell portion but larger than the outside diameter of said threaded portion for permitting said threaded portion to freely telescope into said bell portion past said rib, a narrow internally threaded ring longitudinally movable in said bell portion and threadedly engageable on said threaded portion, the outside diameter of said ring being substantially equal to the inside diameter of said bell portion whereby said ring is adjustable in longitudinal position on said threaded portion but is seatable on said rib, means on said bell Vportion for retaining'said ring against relative rotation with respect to said bell portion and seated on said rib whereby said male section is adjustable longitudinally with respect to said female section by relative rotation thereof, and means in said bell portion for sealing said threaded portion in said female section References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS
