SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,7a3, dated May 20, 1884. Application filed September 11,1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, .ALBERT P. GATIIRIGHT, acitizen of the United States, residing at Harmony Grove, in the county of Jackson and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Gin-Saw-Filing Machine, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to machines for filing giirsaws; and it has for its object to produce a machine which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
To this end it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is alongitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 5 is a front View,
.and Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical sectional view 011 the line as :10. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 8 is a bottom view.
- The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates a suitably-constructed frame, which is provided at its rear end with bearings for a transverse shaft, 13, which is the main shaft of the machine. Suitable bearings are also provided for a longitudinal shaft, 0, provided at its rear end with a pinion, D, engaging a pinion, E, upon the main shaft, from which motion may thus be communicated to the longitudinal shaft 0.
The frame A is provided with a bracket,'F, having bearings for a short shaft, G, carrying a pinion, H, which meshes with a spur-wheel, I, upon the main shaft. One end of the shaft G is provided with a crank, J, which is connected by a pitman, K, .with an arm, L, depending from a rock-shaft, M, which is journaled between a pair of brackets, N N, at tached to the sides of the frame. The ends of said rock-shaft are provided with cranks O O.
J ournaled transversely in the lower part of the frame A is a rock-shaft, 1?, having arearwardly-extending arm or lever, Q, and a downwardly-extending arm, 1%. The latter is pro vided with a vertically-adjustable sleeve or collar, S, held in place by a set-screw, T, and
projecting rod, U, adapted to engage the teeth of the saw which are being filed and feed or revolve it the space of one tooth at each stroke. The length of the stroke of the feed-rod U may be determined by adjusting the sleeve S upon the arm R, thus enabling it to be adjusted to saws with teeth of various sizes.
In addition to the arms Q and R, the rockshaft P is provided with an upwardly-extending bracket, V, which is forced in a forward direction by means of a spring, \V, arranged between a pair of studs, X X, upon the frame, as shown. This serves to operate the rockshaft P, so as to retract the feed-rod.
Y is a stud or roller journaled or secured to the side of the main wheel I, and adapted to engage the rearwardly-extending lever Q of the rock-shaft P, which is thereby operated at each rotation of the said main wheel.
The front end of the frame A isprovided with a pair of transverse bars or crosspieces, Z Z, forming bearings for a vertical shaft, A, on which is pivoted a frame, B consisting of a pair of horizontal leaves, between the rear ends of which is secured an obliquely-projecting arm or lever, G The shaft A is provided with a spur-wheel, D located between the leaves composing the frame B and at its lower end the said shaft is provided with a bevel wheel or pinion, E meshing with a pinion, F upon the front end of the longitudinal shaft 0. The front end of the frame 13 has bearings for a short vertical shaft, G carrying a pinion, H", which meshes with the spurwheel D from which a'rotary motion is thus conveyed to the said shaft G The latter carries at its lower end a circular file, P. The arm or lever G of the frame B engages a roller, J j ournaled upon the upper end of the bracket V of rock-shaft P. v
The frame A is provided with crosspieces K and L, the rear one of which, K is pro vided with slots M to receive the screws or bolts by means of which the file guides or supports 0 are adj ustably attached to the said cross-bar. Said file-guides consist of anglepieces Pf, having vertical slots Q to receive screws It", by means of which collars or sleeves S are attached thereto in such a manner that they may be adjusted vertically. The front having hinged to its front side a forwardlycross-bar, L is also provided withfile-guides l latter is thus swung aside, so as to bring the T suitably secured thereto.
U U denote the file-holders, which consist of suitable rods or bars mounted in the guides or supports in such a manner as to cross each other at the front end. The rear ends of said file-holders have slots V to receive the cranks O at the ends of the rock-shaft M, from which it will thus be seenthat a reciprocating motion is imparted to the said file-holders. The latter are provided at their front ends with inturned hooks W having perforations X to receive the points of the files Y which are thus held securely. The rear ends of the files are attached to the holders by means of screws Z The cross-bar K of the frame is provided with a pin or stud, A upon which is placed a spring, 13, having forwardly-proj ecting ends 0 which are arranged to bear against the inner sides of the file-holders U which are thereby forced inwardly and held to their work.
Pivoted upon the upper cross-piece Z of the frame is a pair of levers, D extending, respectively, in a forward and rearward direction, and provided with downwardly-projecting studs E bearing against the sides of the pivoted frame 13 in front and in rear of the fulcrum of the latter. The levers D are also provided with upwardly-extending arms F bearing against the sides of the file-holders U Hinged to the rear end of the frame A is a bracket, G, which, during operation, forms a support for therear end of the machine, the front end of which rests upon a suitable bench. The bracket G is provided at its lower end with a set-screw, H having a plate, 1 to receive nails or screws for securing the machine in position. By turning the set-screw the rear end of the machine may be raised or lowered, so as to adjust the reciprocating files to the proper pitch in relation to the saw which is to be filed. The latter, during operation, will be mounted upon a suitable frame in front of the machine.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description,
1 taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The main shaft is provided with a crank, by means of which it may be turned either by hand or by any suitable power. Through the medium of the longitudinal shaft a rotary motion is communicated to the revolving file, the reciprocating files being at the same time operated by the oscillating motion of the rock-shaft M, which in turn receives said motion from the spur-wheel I through the intermediate mechanism herein described. During each revolution of the wheel I the roller or stud Y, attached to the said wheel, will engage the lever Q of the rock-shaft P, which latter is thereby oscillated; The feed-rod U is thereby thrown forward into engagement with the saw, which is thus revolved or fed forward the space of one tooth. At the same time the upwardly-projecting bracket V of the rock-shaft P strikes the rear arm,C of the pivoted frame Bflwhich rotating file out of the way of the teeth of the saw while the latter is being turned. In being thus swungaside the frame 13 will strike the studs E of the levers D turning the said levers upon their pivots. The arms F of the said levers, bearing against the file-holders, will force the latter against the tension of the spring B thereby separating the forward ends of the files and bringing them out of the way of the teeth of the saw while the latter is being turned.
This machine is simple, convenient, and easily manipulated. It may also be manufactured at a moderate expense.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a machine for filing gin-saws, the combination of the frame B mounted pivotally upon the shaft A the rotary file mounted in the front part of said frame, means, substantially as described, for imparting a rotary motion to the said file, an arm extending obliquely across from the rear end of the frame 13, a rock-shaft having an upwardly-extending arm or bracket carrying a roller engaging the said arm, and mechanism for operating the said rock-shaft, as herein described.
2. In a machine for filing gin-saws, the combination of the vibrating frame, the revolving file mounted horizontally in the same, the reciprocating files, a spring arranged to force the reciprocating file-holders in opposite directions, so as to hold the files to work against the saw, and a pair of levers having upwardlyextending arms bearing against the reciprocating file-holders, and downwardly-extending studs engaging the sides of the vibrating frame, whereby the movement of the said vibrating frame shall cause the reciprocating file-holders to be forced against the tension of the spring away from the saw, as set forth.
3. The combination of the reciprocating file-holders having vertical slots at their rear ends, the vertically and laterally adjustable guides or supports for the same, a transverse rock-shaft having cranks working in the said slots, an arm extending downwardly from the said rock-shaft, a short transverse shaft having a pinion and a crank, a pitman connecting said crank with the arm upon the rock shaft, and the main drive-wheel meshing with said pinion, as set forth.
4. In a machine for filing gin-saws, the combination, with the frame, of a supporting-bracket hinged to the rear end of the latter, a setscrew working in the lower end of said bracket, and a securing-plate upon the lower end of said set-screw, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
