SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,584, dated May 13, 1884.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HOMBAOH, of St. Ignace, in the county of Mackinac and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Device for Securing lVheels on Axles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, effective, and reliable means for securing the wheels of vehicles upon the axles.
My invention consists in a divided cap fitting over the outer end of an axle, and provided with an internal annular ridge fitting into an annular groove formed near the end of the axle.
My invention also consists ina ring fitting in an annular groove at the inner end of the divided cap, to which ring the cap-sections are hinged.
My invention further consists in a ring hinged to one cap-secti0n, and fitting over the cap for the purpose of retaining the closed sections upon the axle, and in a spring-catch for retaining this latter ring in place upon the cap.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of an axle and wheel-hub, in part, on the line :0 m in Fig. 2, and showing my device as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, parts being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 3is an end View of the united cap-sections and of the ring to which they are hinged.
A indicates a portion of the hub of a wheel, and B one end of an axle of a vehicle. The outer end of the axle, instead of being provided with a screw-thread and a nut in the usual manner, is formed with a tapering portion, 1), and with a rounded or other shaped head, 0, having a square shoulder, d, forming, with the portion 1), an annular groove, 6.
A tapering cap, 0, divided longitudinally into two parts, 0 G has a recess, D, formed in its wider or inner end for receiving the end of the axle B. An internal annular ridge, f, projects into the recess D. A groove, 9, is formed in the outer surface of the cap 0 at its inner end, and the inner lower corners of the upper cap section, 0, are cut away at h, to permit the heel of part 0 to swing open over the portion b of the axle on the ring E as a center. A metal ring, E, fits in the groove 9 of the cap, to which ring the cap-sections O G are hinged by suitable hinges. As shown, the cap-sections have each a perforation, 76, which extends beneath the groove 9, and a wire-hinge loop, Z, passes through the same and over the ring E. The inner ends of the cap-sections are cut away beyond the grooves g, to facilitate entering the said sections within the ring E, but leaving a top and bottomportion, m m, to retain the sections within the ring. A metal ring, F, fits over the cap 0, and is held in place upon said cap by a wire hinge, p, or other device, and by a spring-catch, n.
In use, after the vehicle-wheel has been placed upon the axle and the hub is pushed back to its place, the ring E, with the lower cap-section held in place within it, is passed over the end of the axle, the end of the axle passing into the said lower cap-section. The upper cap-section is then swung down over the lower cap-section and under the ring E. The ring F is then swung over the tapering outer end of the cap, holding the sections securely together, and is retained in place by the springcatch a. The cap is held upon the axle by the engagement of the ridge f of the cap with the groove 6 of the axle, whereby the wheel is held securely.
WVith this device no wrench is required in taking off or putting ona wheel, and less time is required. There is no danger of the cap working oil, as with a screw-threaded axle and a nut, and there is no thread to become bruised and Worn, whereby the vehicle is rendered useless until repaired.
This device can be applied to other uses as well as the one described for holding a vehiclewheel upon its axle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with an axle having an annular groove formed in its outer end, of a cap formed in two sections, and having a recess for receiving the end of the axle, and an internal annular ridge, and provided with means for holding the two cap-sections together, substantially as specified.

5. In a device for securing wheels upon axles, the combination, with the two sections 0 and C of the cap 0, of the ring E,- to which the said cap-sections are hinged, of the ring F,
hinged to the section 0, and of the catch n in the section O, substantially as specified.
6. The combination, with the axle B, having the groove 0, of the ring E, the two cap-sections 0 C hinged to the ring E, and adapted to engage with the groove in the axle, the ring F, hinged to the cap-section C and the springcatch it in the capsection C, substantially as specified.
7. The combination, in a device for securing wheels upon axles, with the ring E, of capsections 0 0 having a groove near their wider ends, and the two sections being cut away outside the groove, leaving the portions m m, and the cap-section 0 being cut away at h, and of the ring F, substantially as specified.
