CHARLES H. BENNETT, OF CHELTENHAM, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO ,JAOOB B. BOHREB, OF LANCASTER, PA.
ATTACHMENT FOR BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,273, dated May 6, 1884.
Application filed January 19, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. BENNETT,
.of Oheltenham township, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers and Attachments for Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are respectively side and front elevations of myimproved bottle-stopper fastener. Fig. 8 is a plan, and Fig. 4 is a detail plan. Fig. 5 is a side view of my saddle, and Fig. 6 is a top view.
My invention has relation to bottle-stopper fasteners, and has for its principal object to provide a cheap, simple, and effective fastener which is readily attached to and detached from the bottle, and is susceptible of being easily looked upon and released from the stopper.
My invention accordingly consists of the novel combination and construction of parts comprising a bottle-stopper fastener, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, A represents the stopple, which may be of any suitable or desired construction. I have shown it composed of a half-round or curved cast-metal top, B. having a recess or seat, b, and with a laterallyprojecting lug, b, with elongated opening or eye 6 a rubber or other gasket, 0, and a cork, D. The gasket and cork D are affixed to the top B in any desired manner.
E represents a saddle having lugs c e, through which passes a key or clamp, F, having a curved or bent top, f. The saddle E is secured to the neck of the bottle by a band or wire, 0', as shown, and the curved end f of key F passes through the eyes b" of the lug b, and is designed to enter the recess 6 in top B, to compress gasket 0 and cause it and the cork D to hermetically seal the bottle. The height of the end f of key F is suitably adjusted in relation with the top B, so that said end f may be easily passed to and slipped out of the recess 1) or off of an ordinary stopple having no recess, and yet exert the required pressure for eifecting the sealing of the bottle by means of the adjusting-nuts f f, secured to the end f of said key on opposite sides of one of the lugs e e, or the lower lug, e, as indicated in the drawings.
To seal the bottle, the stopper A is passed into the mouth of the former and the key F turned on its vertical axis, or from right to left, until its end f enters the recess 1) in top B, or rests on the center of a cork or stopple not having a recess. By reversing the lastdescribed motion, the key F is released from the stopple, and the latter is thereby drawn out of the bottle to unseal it. Said parts then assume the position indicated in dotted lines 00 00, Fig. 1.
It will be noted that the parts of the fastener are few and extremely simple, easily and readily secured to the bottle or detached therefrom, and that the sealing and unsealing of the bottle are effected byavertical or an axial movement of the key.
It is not necessary that a recessed top should be used on the stopple, nor is it necessary that the stopple should be attached to the key, as shown in the drawings; but the fastener can be used to secure an ordinary cork in the bottle, instead of the wires now used to accomplish that purpose, and it will be much cheaper and more easy to secure a cork by'means of my fastener, and also to release it from the cork.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a bottle-stopple fastener, the combination of a stopple having a lug, a revolving key passing through said lug and bent over the center of the stopple to form a retaining device, a saddle having lugs for the key, and means, substantially as described, in the key for adjusting and holding the latter in place, substantially as described.
2. The combination of stopple A, having top B, with a recess, 12, and lug-opening b the key F, having curved or bent end f and adjusting mechanism, and saddle E,with bearings c e, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' CHARLES H. BENNETT. IVitnesses:
ALLEN H. GANGEWER, GEORGE W. LEETZER.
