INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY CLOTH REEL Alexander B. Clark, In, Greenville, S.'C. (Rte. 4, Box 2012, Hendersonville, NC.)
Filed Mar. 16, 1960, Ser. No. 15,311
2 Claims. (Cl. 206-50) This invention relates to improved cloth reels of the type used for handlingbolts of cloth and thelike Cloth reels of the general type used for handling bolts of cloth have long been used employing various structural forms. Often the reels are constructed each from several cardboard blanks or in the case of a single blank the blank is so arranged that the center portion of the reel is substantially filled with cardboard with the corrugations or fiuting of the cardboard arranged horizontally. Such reels are relatively difficult to construct and do not provide any substantial rigidity with respect to torsional stresses which may be imposed thereon. Such reels are relatively heavy due to the use of the considerable cardboard material and are relatively costly because of the additional labor occasioned by their relatively complicated construction and the additional cost of the cardboard material. The additional cardboard also makes these reels relatively heavy.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved cloth reel which makes more effective use of the material of which it is constructed to provide additional strength therefor.
An important object of this invention is to provide a unitary blank from which an improved cloth reel might be constructed.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cloth reel structure which will be relatively easy to manufacture.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a cloth reel structure which might be manufactured relatively inexpensively due to reduced labor costs and due to savings in materials of construction.
Yet another object of this invention is the provision of a cloth reel which will be constructed of a minimum amount of material and yet provide a maximum amount of strength and which will be relatively light in weight.
Some of the structure provided to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following description and by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof wherein some illustrative examples of the invention are shown, and wherein:
' Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating acloth reel blank constructed in accordance with the present invention, with parts broken away,
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view illustrating the blank folded to form a cloth reel in accordance with the present invention, with parts broken away, I
Figure 3 is a perspective view; at a reduced scale, a cloth reel constructed in accordance with the present invention, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective view illustrating a modified form of the present'invention.
I Referring more particularly to the drawing, a single substantially rectangular section of cardboard is referred to at A and constitutes essentially the cloth reelblank.
A first pair of scored portions 10 and 11 are provided adjacent one edge of the blank and spaced therefrom is -a second pair of scored portions 12 and 13. A slit score 14 is provided in the under side of the blank A and extends through the blank except for an inner layer of flexible paper material. Figure 2 shows the blank A folded so as to form the reel and it should be especially noted that the portion of the blank between the slit score 14 and its adjacent free edge forms a rib 15 which extends longitudinally of the reel in the intermediate portion thereof.
' It will be noted that the portion of the blank A between the pairs of scores 10, 11 and 12, 13 forms the bottom 16 of the reel while the portion of the blank A between the scores 10 and 11 form one side 17 of the reel and the portion between the scores 12 and 13 form the other side 18 of the reel. It is preferred that the rib 15 extend in the medial portion of the cloth reel so that the top 19 is formed from the remaining portions of the blank 19a and 19b.
It is important to note that the blank A is provided with fiuting or corrugations 20 and that all of the scoring is in a direction transverse to the direction of the flufing 20. The fiuting 20 of the rib 15 is vertical when the rib is secured in position vertically and extending longitudinally of the reel in the intermediate portion thereof. The rib 15 is secured adjacent its lower portion to the bottom 16 of the red by suitable adhesive 21. Adhesive 22. is also used to secure the flap 19a adja cent the slit score 14.
A modified form of the invention is shown in Figure 4 in which flexible sheet material in the form of paper 23 is secured across the blank and extends outwardly beyond the free edge remote from the slit score 14 in the form of a tab 23a. The tab 23a is preferably secured by a suitable adhesive medium 24 across the junction of the top portions 19a and 1%. I
It will be noted that the score 14 is preferably a f,
slit score since this is much preferred from a construction standpoint so as to provide a convenient place for joining the upper surfaces of the top portions 19a and 19b to form a smooth surface. Additional strength is provided by the addition of the sheet material 23 and the tab 231: as shown in Figure 4 to form an even smoother surface and a stronger juncture. The usual cardboard end portions 25 and 26 are provided to lend additional strength and to provide a surface for the usual type labeling, one of the labels being illustrated at 27.
The foregoing disclosure and description of the invention is illustrative and explanatory thereof and changes and variations will occur of those skilled in the art which may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
l. A cloth reel including, a single rectangular section of cardboard having fiuting, a first'pair of scored portions parallel to each other and transverse to said fiuting, a second pair of scored portions parallel to each other and transverse to said fiuting, the portion of said section between said first pair of scored portions and the portion of said section between said second pair of scored portions forming the sides of the reel, the portion of said section between said first pair of scored portions and said 1 fiuting forming a longitudinal rib with vertical fiuting in the intermediate portion of said reel, and an adhesive medium securing the free edge of said rib to'the intermediate portion of said section and securing the remaining free edge adjacent the upper portion of said rib forming the top of the reel having a substantially continuous surface.
2. A cloth reel as set forth in claim 1 including, a flexible sheet material fixed to said section and extending beyond said remaining free edge in the form of a flap,
slit score.
