To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwls BUsH, Jr., of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Grinding Cutter-Knives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a .part of this specication.
This invention relates to an limprovement in sharpening-machines, for use in factories or other places where wood-working machinery is employed, for grinding the cutter-knives of planing or similar machines. It relates more particularly to machines for the purpose above stated, having a rotary grinding-disk mounted upon an arbor having stationary bearings,and means for supporting and moving the cutterknives to be ground with reference to the grinding-disk. Its obj ect is to provide an improved constrnction in the class of grindingmachines above referred to, and also to provide a combined machine forthe purpose above mentioned and for sharpening saws.
As it relates to devices for supporting and feeding the cutter-knives in a grinding-machine of the character described, my invention consists in an improved means for givingavibratory motion to the cutting-edge ofthe knife during its contact with the rotary grindingdisk; inimprovementsin the devices for adjusting the knives in relation to the said grinding-disk, and in improvements in the devices for moving thesaid kniveslongitndinally with reference thereto, as will be hereinafter fully set forth. y
As an improved construction in .combined machines for the purposes above mentioned, my invention consists in the combinatiomwith a single rotating arbor/carrying two grindingdisks of emery or other substance, of mechanism for supporting and moving cutter-knives with reference to one grinding-disk upon said arbor, and devices for supporting` and moving a circular or other saw with reference to the other grinding-disk, so as to produce the desired form in the saw-teeth, and to accomplish the necessary feed-movement in the saw.
The devices for moving and feeding a saw above mentioned, and which are shown in the drawings, have been made the subject-matter of a separate application, filed simultaneously with this, and form no part of the present invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a combined saw-sharpener and cutter-knife grinder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical, central, longitudinal section of the same, taken upon the line x x of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a partial transverse section, taken upon the line x xof Fig. 2, and showing the knife-grinding devices alone. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of the top of the machine, showing the end of theknifecarrying slide and the devices thereon for snpporting and adjusting the knife.
As illustrated in the drawings, the main frame of the machine consists of two end castings, A, a front plate, A', and a rear girt, A2. Upon the top of the said frame is mounted an arbor, B, having bearings in boxes b, supported by standards b', and provided with two grinding-disks, B and B2, the latter disk being used in connection with other devices shown for sharpening saws, and the former in connection with the knife-grinding mechanism, as hereinafter described.
C is the main driving-shaft, which is located in the lower part ofthe machine longitudinally thereof, and has bearings in boxes c, supported upon the vlower cross-pieces of the end castings, A. The said driving-shaft is provided with a pulley, C, from which motion is transmitted to the arbor B by means of a belt, C?, which passes over said pulley and a pulley, B3, upon the said arbor. An idler, Bt, is placed between the standards b, upon a shaft, b, at a point opposite the top edge of the frame-plate A', over which idler the belt C passes, such idler being necessary on account of the relative positions of the arbor and the driving-shaft, in order to prevent contact of the belt with the frame. The drivingshaft C is also provided with a worm, c', which meshes with a worm-wheel, D', upon a transverse shaft, D, by which shaft the devices for giving the requisite movements of the sawsharpening devices are operated. and a clutch, D2, is larranged to connect the worm-wheel D with said shaft, so that it may be disconnected from the drivin g-shaft C when desired.
rlhe devices shown for reciprocating the saw so as to bring its teeth periodically in Contact with the grinding-disk B2,and the feeding devices for rotating it during such reciprocatory movement will be briey described, and are as follows: rlhe saw to be sharpened is secured to an arm, E, adjnstably attached to a vertically-sliding plate, E, placed upon the frame of the machine beneath the disk B2. The said plate E receives a reciprocatory movement by means of a lever, G, which is centrally pivoted at g to the machine-frame, andis connected at one of its endsto the said plate E, and at its opposite end to a crank-pin, d, upon the end of the shaft D. rlhe plate E is constructed to slide in a guide-plate, F, which is adj ustably attached to the fra1neplate A, so as to permit the direction of the reciprocation of the plate E and the saw carried thereby to bc changed with reference to the grinding-disk. Means for adjusting the position of the saw upon the arm E and said arm upon/the plate E, for adjusting the fulcrum of the lever G,and the length of the connection between the end of the said leverand the crankpin d,are also provided for the purposes and in the manner fully .set forth in the application for Letters Patent above referred to.
For the purpose of giving the necessary r'otary feed motion to the saw, so as to bring the teeth thereon one by one to the grinding-disk, as the said saw is reciprocated, `a vertical le ver, H, is pivoted to the machine-frame, and provided upon its upper end with a feed-iinger, h, the said feed-finger being pivoted loosely upon said lever, so that its free end will fall into the depressions between the teeth and force said teeth forward when the said le ver is oscillated. rlhe lever H is operated by a horizontal lever, I, which receives its motion from an' eccentric, di, upon the shaft D, through the medium of a lever, l, and pitman I. A form-block, H', is secured to the lever H, against the edge of which the end of the lever I bears, and the said block is kept in contact with the said lever by means of a spring, H2.
Other details of construction in the devices shown for supporting and movinga saw are more fully described in the application before referred to, and their operation is fully set forth therein, and need not be further explained in connection with the present application, as such devices, as before stated, form in themselves no part ofthe present invention.
B is the disk for grinding cutter-knives, which, as shown, is placed upon the end of the Aarbor B opposite to the disk Bi. The cutterknives to be ground are supported nponasliding bed, K,which is placed in guides Z, formed in a bed-piece, L, which is supported at its ends upon the top of the end castings, A, of the machine. rlhe sliding bed K preferably extends the entire length of the machine, and is provided with means for supporting the cutter-knives to be ground, consisting of two arms, M, which are pivoted to the said bedplate, one near each end thereof', and are rigidly connected at their ends by a longitudinal plate, M, to which the cutter-knives are at tached. The plate M is supported in such position with reference to the grinding-disk B that a cutter-knife thereon will be presented at a desired angle to the periphery of said disk, and is adjustable both as to its distance from said disk and its angle thereto, as will be hereinafter described. The bed-plate Kis moved or reciprocated longitudinally, for the purpose of causing a knife or cutter secured to the plate M to be operated upon by the grindingY disk over the entire length of its cuttin g-edge. Such movement is preferably'given to theI bed-plate by means of a worm, N, attached to'a rotating shaft, N', which worm engages a rack, K, upon the bed-plate K, an automatic reversing-gear being used to change the direction of motion of said shaft at the limits ofthe movement ofthe bedplate in each direction. Thewornrwheel shafti is mounted in bearings n, placed upon brackets secured to the side of the bed-plate L, and motion is given thereto from a shaft, O, by means of spur-wheels N2 and O,Fig. 2, upon said shafts,
respectively, and an intermediate idler, P, mounted upon a shaft, P. The shaft O is provided with two fixed pulleys, O2, which are placed a short distance apart thereon, andl a loose pulley, O3, mounted upon the said shaft between the said xed pulleys,
Upon the driving-shaft G, opposite the pnl-V leys mentioned, is placed a broad-faced'pulley, C, and motion is transmitted from the said driving-shaft to the shaft O by means of 4two belts, Q and Q', placed around the pulley C3 and the pulleys O2 and O3. The belt Q is crossed or twisted, and an automatic shifting device i-s provided for moving said belts Q and Q alternately from the fast to the loose pulleys upon the shaft U, s'o as to periodically reversethe motion of the said shaft.
' rIhe shifting device mentioned consists of a lever, R, Figs. 2 and 3, pivoted upon a stud, r, fixed uponthe bed L, said lever having two arms, R and R2, provided with loops 1" and r2 upontheir lower ends, which engage the belts Q and Q', respectively. The said lever R is operated by two stops, S, one of said stops being placed upon the sliding bed K, near each end thereof. The said stops are placed so as to strike the upper end of the lever R when the said bed reaches the limit of its movement in each direction, and the belts Q and Q are thereby shifted, first one and then the other belt being caused to run upon the loose pulley O, so as to periodically reverse the direction of rotation of the shaft O and the direction of motion of the bed K in a well-known manner. The stops S are attached to the bedplate K, so as to be adjustable longitudinally thereon, and by changing the position of said IOC' IIO
stops the reversal of the movement of said bed-plate in either direction may take place at any point desired, according to the length of the cutter-knife to be sharpened and the position in which it is secured upon the bedplate. For the purpose of allowing the adjustment of the stops S upon the bed-plate K, said stops are secured thereto by means of bolts s,which pass through slots k in said bedplate, as shown.
In order to prevent the article being ground in the machine described from receivingaconcave shape upon the beveled face formed by the grinding-disk, (said shape depending upon the radius of the said grinding-disk,) I have provided means for giving said article a lateral vibratory movement while its edge is in contact with said disk. Such vibratory motion may be in a straight line, and in the plane of the beveled face ofthe article being ground,
so as to cause said face to be perfectly fiat; but in the machine shown, and as preferably constructed, such vibratory motion is given to the plate M, and the article is moved in an arc the center of which is the pivotal point of the arms M. As the radius of said are is relatively large in proportion to the amplitude of the vibration given to thearticle being ground, and as said radius is constant, the result obtained is practically the same as though the vibratory movement tool; place in a straight line.
As a means of producing the vibratory motion described in the plate M, said plate is supported upon a vibrating table, T, by means of projections m, which rest upon the surface thereof. The table T is arranged longitudinall y at the front of the bed L, and extends the full length thereof, so as to afford a bearing for the projections m during the longitudinal reciprocation of the plate h and is made of the requisite width to allow the necessary lateral movement of the said projections when they are movedby the lateral adjustment of the plate M upon the sliding bed K.' IIhe said table is pivoted at its inner edge to the bed L, and supported at its outer edge by a pitman, U, which connects it with a lever,V, said lever being pivoted at one end to the bracket b, and provided at the other with a slot, f1), which engages a crank-pin, a', upon the end of the shaft N, by whichl means the said lever is oscillated upon its pivot,and the table T thereby given a vibratory motion. The table T extends the entire length of the bed L, as before stated, and is pivoted thereto at each end by means of bolts @passing'through lugs t', cast upon the under face of the said table, and lugs Z2 upon the said bed L. The pitman U is pivoted to a lug, t2, upon the central portion of the said table, and its lower end is pivotally attached to an eye, a', formed upon the upper end of a bolt, U', which bolt passes through a slot, c, in the lever V, and secured therein by a nut, u2, upon its lower end. The bolt U may be moved in the said slot, and
clamped in its changed position by means of said nut a, and the pivotal point of the lower end of the pitman U thereby adjusted longitudinally of the lever V, as desired. By changing the distance of the boltU from the pivotal point ofthe lever V, the amount of movement given to the tableT may be varied, as desired. The lever V, as shown, is, for convenience, pivoted upon the projecting end of the shaft bt, upon which the idler B is mounted; but said lever may be pivoted otherwise, if desired.
In order to allow a lateral adjustment of the cutter-supporting plate M with reference to the grinding-disk, the arms M are pivoted to sliding blocks M2, which blocks are centrally apertured for the insertion of screwshafts K2, said shafts being supported in lugs It upon the bed -plate K and transversely thereto. The said screw-shafts are provided with milled heads K, by which they may be rotated, and the blocks M thereby moved as desired in adjusting the position of the plate M.
For the purpose of permitting an adjustment of the position of the article supported upon thevplate M with reference to the angle at which said article is presented to the grinding-disk, the said plate M is connected to the `arms M by means of a hinged joint, so as to allow a rotary movement of said plate upon said arms. The said hinged joint is formed between plates M3, attached to the ends ofthe plate M and the arms M by means of pivot-bolts m2, which pass through the overlapping portions of said plates Ms and the said arms. The plates M3 are preferably cast integral with the plate M, and are provided, as shown in Fig. j
3, with arms Mt, extending beyond their pivotal points, the ends of which arms M4 are held in position with reference to the arms M by means of adj Listing-screws M5,by which the plates M3 may be turned upon their pivotal connections with the arms M, and the angle of the plate M to said arms thereby varied as desired. The adj Listing-screws M5 are preferably inserted in threaded apertures in lugs m3, cast upon the arms M, as shown, the ends of said arms M* being moved vertically when the screws are turned in said lugs by means of collars m4 upon the said screws, which collars are The pivot m2, by which the plate M is joined to the arms M, is,as shown, placed between the` projection m, by which the plate M is supported upon the table T and the pivotal point of the arm M. By thisf'construction the plate M and the edge of the knife thereon are held at substantially the same height above the table T, and consequently in the same position with reference to the grinding-disk at whatever angle the plate M is placed, for the reason that when the said plate M is turned upon the pivot m2, the outer ends of the arms M will rise or fall, as the case may be, and the said plate will turn around the point of contact between the projection m and the table T as a stationary center.

The cutter-knives, which are to be sharpened, may be secured to the face of the plate M' in any desired or preferred manner. The knife shown in the drawings is provided with a series of transverse slots, and is hcld upon the said plate by bolts m5, having enlarged heads, which enter a longitudinal T-groove, m, formed in the face of said plate. The position of the back edge of the knife is determined, and the said knife may be moved in adjusting it in position by means of set-screws M, which pass through lugs m7 upon the upper edge of the plate M', and bear at their ends against the rear edge of said knife.
For the purpose of supporting the table T immovably, when desired, the pitman U may be disconnected from the bolt U' and-secured upon the side of the standard b' by means of a tap-bolt, which is passed through a slot, a3, in said pitman, and inserted in an aperture, bf", in the face of said standard, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The surface of the plate M', against which the knife to be ground rests, or a portion of said plate near the cutting-edge of said knife, is preferably provided with shallow transverse grooves ms, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. These grooves are for the purpose of allowing the access of air to the lower surface of the knife, so as to prevent, to a greater or less extent, heating the knife by the action of the grindingdisk thereon.
It is found in grinding-machines that it is necessary to cause the peripheries of grindingdisks to travel at a denite speed, in order to attain the most favorable results, so that in the use of two disks upon one arbor they must be of approximately the same diameter, in order that both may work effectively at the same time. It would therefore be necessary in combining a saw-sharpening device in the manner stated with the knife-grinding machine using a large grinding-disk, as heretofore, to make the grinding-disk of the sawsharpening device correspondingly large. Such construction would be both inconvenient and expensive, and is avoided in the combined machine described by giving the vibratory motion before described to the cutterknives to be sharpened, and thereby making possible the use of small grinding-disks both for the knife-grinding and saw-sharpening devices, which disks are placed upon the same arbor and used at the same time.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a rotary grindingdisk and a longitudinally and laterally movable plate constructed to support a knife in position to be ground, of a movable table constructed to support said plate, and means constructed to give a vibratory motion to said table, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a rotary grindingdisk, of a longitudinally-movable bed-plate, K, a knife-supporting plate, M', pivotally attached to said bed-plate and laterally adjustable thereon, a pivoted table, T, constructed to support said plate M', and means for vibrating said table, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with a rotary grindingdisk and with a rotating shaft, N', provided with a crank-pin, m', of a longitudinally-movable bed-plate, N, a plate, M', pivotally attached to said bed-plate, a pivoted table, T, a pivoted lever, V, connected with said .crankpin, a pitman, U, joining said lever with the said table, and adjustable connections between said pitman and lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with a rotary grindingdisk and a sliding bed-plate, K, of arms M,
pivoted to said bed-plate, a knife-supporting plate, M', pivotally connected with the free ends of said arms, means for adjusting the angle of the plate M' with reference to the arms, and means for supporting the said plate M', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination, with a rotary grindingdisk and a sliding bed-plate, K, of arms M,
pivoted to said bed-plate, means for adjusting the pivot connecting said arms with the bed-plate laterally upon said plate, a knifesupporting plate, M', pivotally connected with the free ends of the arms, means for adjusting the angle ofthe plate M with reference to the arms, and means for supporting the said plate I' substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a unitary machine for grlnding cutterknives and sharpening saws, the combination,
with a stationary rotating arbor carrying two grinding-disks, and with a driving-shaft, of means for supporting and giving the necessary movements to a saw in relation to one of the grinding-disks, and a movable carrier for supporting a cutter-knife in proper position with reference to the other disk, substantially as described.
8. In a unitary machine for grinding cutterknives Vand sharpening saws, the combination, with a stationary rotating arbor carrying two IOO IIO
grinding-disks, and with a suitable drivingshaft, of means for supporting and giving the necessary movements to a saw, and means for supporting a cutter-knife and giving it a transverse vibratory motion, substantially as described.
