Description
Nrrnn STATES \VALTER O. GIFFORD, OF BROOKS, MICHIGAN.
LEATHER AND CLOTH VARNISH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,515, dated April 22, 1884.
Application filed October 11, 1883.
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVALTER O. GIFFORD, of Brooks, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Leather and Cloth Varnish, of which the following is a description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved composition of matter for rendering cloth or leather water-proof and giving it a fine gloss and polish.
My improved composition of matter consists of the following ingredients mixed in the following proportions: alcohol, one quart; gumshellac, two ounces; white resin, one and onethird ounce; oil of turpentine, (spirits of turpentinc,) two-thirds ounce; kerosene-oil, onethirdounce; oil ofcinnamon,two-ninths ounce;
lamp-black, one-sixth ounce.
The above ingredients arethoroughl y mixed. The lamp-black gives the mixture a color. The gum-shellac gives it gloss, and the resin body. The kerosene-oil causes it to enter the pores of the leather, and the oil of cinnamon perfumes it and removes the disagreeable penetrating odor of the kerosene-oil and oil of turpentine.
To apply the compound on leather, rubber, oil-cloth, &c., the brush is dipped in the mixture or solution, and the surplus is removed from the brush by pressing the bristles against the sides of the dish containing the solution. Then the mixture is applied on the rubber, leather, oil-cloth, &c., by means of rapid light strokes of the brush. If applied on cloth, the
first coat must be very thin, and the strokes must be very light and rapid. A second coat (No specimens.)
is then applied in alike manner, and then a third, and so on until seven or eight are thus applied and the cloth has the desired covering. The cloth should be permitted to dry for about fifteen minutes after each coat. The first coat colors the cloth light gray, the second a darker gray, and gradually the cloth is colored black. The cloth is renderedwater-proof, and is pro vided with a high polish. The coating does not crack nor blister, but is very elastic and retains its polish.
This varnish is applicable for use upon any material, new or old, requiring waterproofing or renovation, from the lightest to the heaviest material, and any desired finish can be obtained, according to the quantity applied.
I am aware that an enamel or varnish has been heretofore used consisting of alcohol,
gumshellac, Burgundy pitch, camphor, gumcopal, resin, turpentine, and larnp-black, and I do not desire to claim such as of my inven tion.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described composition of matter for coating leather, cloth, &c., to render it water-proof and provide it with a polish, consisting of alcohol, gu1n-shellac, white resin, oil of turpentine, kerosene-oil, oil of cinnamon, and lamp-black,in the proportions herein specified.
VALTER O. GIFFORD.
