Description

' To all wholit it may concern:
UNITED STATES PATENT Prion.
\VINFIELD SCOTT CHAFEY, OF NEW EGYPT, NEW JERSEY.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.296,524, dated April 8, 1884.
' Application filed February 19, 1884. (No model.)
Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. CHAFEY, a citizen of the United States'of America, residing at New Egypt, in the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful. Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bale-ties made of wire, the ends being secured together by loops of peculiar construction; and it therefore consists in the novel construction of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, the object being to provide a convenient, cheap, and reliable connecting means between the ends of the tie.
I attain the object of my invention by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a representation of the locking-loop, with the loopof the other end of the tie in position of passage over the locking-loop. Fig. 2 shows the parts. in intermediate connection, and Fig. 3 shows the parts in final connection.
The band may consist of one strand of wire, or of two strands. I If one strand is used, it is doubled in that part forming the locking-loop.
The locking-loop A is formed by making a long looped piece and then bending the wire back on the main band, as shown at a, then bending the free end upward and downward, as shown at b, then bending the free end up and back and bringing the 100p over the part I), pulling it forward until it forms the loop 0, the bend of the loop cl in the wire resting 1 against the curve in the part a, as shown in Fig. 3. The loop B on the other end of the strand or band is formed as usual, but of such size that it may be readily passed over the locking-loop.
It will be seen that the parts may be held in union by the contact of the loop in the curve a, and ultimately in the end of the lock ing-loop at c, where it securely remains.
The operation of uniting the parts is as follows: The plain loop on the end of the strand is passed over the locking-loop into the curve a, when the loop is passed through the loop (2, which rests in a, and thence up over the curved part b and then drawn forward, and the engagement is effected and the tie secured together. The tie of course is used on compressed material, which, 'upon releusement, draws the links firmly together by its retract-- ile force.
WVhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The locking loop or link A, adapted to re ceive a loop on the end of the bale-wire. and formed with the curved part a, the looped part 6, loop 0, and end loop, d, constructed and operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
\VINFIELD SCOTT CHAFEY. Attest:
