HOISTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,433, dated April 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, .Ins. I-I. MoNrcoMEnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver city, in the county of Arapahoeand State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in hoisting apparatus, in which a whim is actuated by horse-power; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide .a separable drum that maybe easily transported; second, to provide a positive lock whereby the weight may be prevented from descending in case of breakage of the machinery, and to provide a convenient means for operating the same. lhese objects I attain by the use of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top View of the entire machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a part of the machine on the line at 0 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail of the locking device; Fig. 4:, a detail of the ratchet and hub; Fig. 5, a detail of ratchet and thimble.

The timbers A and A, having the timbers B and B attached thereto, and the timber a and hangers b constitute the frame-work of the machine.
In the hangers b 3) turns the shaft D, carrying a drum-wheel, E. A hub, d, on. the shaft D is connected by a clutch, d, to a thimble, 9. To the latter is secured one end of an arm or sweep, G, to the opposite end of which is attached a singletree, for the purpose of attaching a horse.
The drum-wheel E is constructed with a view to taking the same apart to be transportin the hub-plates e e. The bolts j are provided with nuts on their ends, which, when screwed into place. compress the hub-plates 6 onto the ends of the distance-washers f, binding them securely together. Between the arms I are placed distance-washers c, and are retained in place by means of bolts j, which pass through the arms I, andthrough the washers c, and being provided with nuts the arms are drawn tight onto the ends of the distancewashers c and retained in that position. A plate, H, extends around the distance-washers c of sufficient width to form a drum upon which to wind a rope or cable. The arms I extend beyond the plate Hsome distance, and are provided with circular bands It, made of angle-iron, which form flanges of sufficient depth to admit of the necessary amount of rope or cable being wound thereon. The bands h are secured to the ends of the arms I by rivets 21 or equivalent means. Abrakebeam, K, having attached thereto a brake-block, K, is pivoted at one end to the frame-work at L, the opposite end of which slides in a slot made in the timber A, and is operated by a rope, Z, extending to the lever m, which is pivoted to the sill M. A lip on the side of the lever m engages with the ratchet N to retain the brake in contact with the drum-wheel E. The top part of the huh (I is serrated in such a manner as to form a ratchet or clutch. The lower end of the thimble g is serrated to cor respond with the serrations in the hub d, which lock together for the purpose of turning the wheel E. The thimble g is provided with a flange, 0, under which the forked end of a lever, P, proj ects for the purpose of raising the thimble, carrying the sweep G out of gear. The lever P is fulcrumed at P, and has a rope,
B, attached to the end thereof at T, which extends to the hand-lever n. The rope R in its course passes around a pulley, r, situated on the frame at 1', directly under the outer end of the lever I, which enables therope, when operated by the lever a, to draw downward the end of the lever P, which raises the thimble 9 out of connectionwith the hub 01.
In order to prevent the drum-wheel E from turning backward in the event of the breaking or disarrangement of any part of the before-described machinery, I provide a rollerj and j.
shaped piece of wood or metal, WV,which is at-- tached to the frame by use of bolts X X, which retain it in such aposition relative to the drumwheel as to form a wedgeshaped opening, in which the lock is forced upon releasing the lever V by the tension of the spring U and the contact of the wheel E in such a manner as to prevent the drum-wheel from turning backward and lowering the weight.
Having thus fully set forththe construction and operation of my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The hereinbefore-described. hoisting apparatus, consisting, substantially, of a framework, the drum-wheel attached thereto, upon which to wind and unwind a hoisting-rope, a friction-brake, rope, and lever for regulating the descent of the weight, an adjustable arm forthe purpose of revolving the drum-wheel, mechanism fordisengaging the arm from the drum-wheel, and a lock whereby the weight is prevented from lowering, all operating as described and specified.
2-. The drum-wheel B, composed, substantially, of the shaft D, the flanges 6, having slots 6 made therein, arms I, the distance-washers f and c, the band H, the rims h, and the bolts 3. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination, with the drum-wheel E and shaft D, of the hub d, the thimble g, and sweep G, whereby force applied to the arm revolves the drumwheel.
4. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination, with the drum-wheel E, the shaft D, the hub cl, and thimble g, of the lever P, fulcrumed to the frame, and having the rope R attached to the end thereof, the pulley r, and hand-la ver n,.whereby the sweep .is thrown out of gear.
5. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination, with the drum-wheel E, of the brake-block K, brake-lever K, the rope Z, thehand-lever m, and ratchet N, all operating as specified.
- 6. Aroller-lock consisting, substantially, of a brake-shoe, F, having lugs tthereon, and the roller S.
7. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of the roller-lock, consisting of the brakeshoe I having lugs 25 thereon, carrying the roller S, the sloping block WV, spring U, the cord V", and the foot-lever V, all operating as described.
8. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of a drum or wheel, the roller-lock, composed of the brake-shoe F, the roller S, and tapering wedge W, all operating as specified.
9. The forkedflever P, fulcrumed at P, whereby the thimble is disengaged from the. drum-wheel.
