To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK M. SEARS, of East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Door Check and Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for holding a door open, and for preventing the door from being opened too far.
The invention consists in the combination, with a stud secured to and projecting from the door, of a block provided with a transverse and a vertical aperture, 2. pin or bolt being held in the lower part of the vertical aperture in such a manner that it projects into the transverse aperture, a spring resting on the pin or bolt, and which spring can be adjusted by means of ascrew screwed to the upper part of the vertical aperture.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved door-check, showing how it is applied. Fig. 2 is a face view of the part on the door. Fig. 3 is a face view of the part secured on the floor.
A stud, A, projects from a plate, B, secured to the'outer surface of the door, at the bottom edge, which stud is slightly recessed in its upper surface. A block, C, provided with a base plate, D, is provided with a transverse aperture, E, and with an aperture, F, extending from the top down to the transverse aperture E, "which aperture F is contracted at the lower end to form a shoulder, a. Ashort pin or bolt, G, having a flat head, H, is contained in the lower part of the aperture F in such a manner that the head H rests upon the The tension of the spring can thus be adjusted by screwing the screw J down inore or less. If a heavy door is to be held open, the spring must be adjusted to have more power and offer more resistance than if a light door is to be held. If the door is swung open, the stud A passes into the aperture E and presses the studG upward slightly, and then the spring K presses the stud on the recessed part of the stud A, and thus holds the door open. If the door is to be closed, the stud A is drawn out of the aperture E by pulling or pushing on the door.
The block 6 can be. secured to the wall, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
In a door-check, the block G, provided with the transverse aperture E and the vertical aperture F, combined with the pin or bolt G, held in the aperture E, the spring K, resting on the bolt or pin G, and the screw J, screwed in the upper part of the aperture F, substantially as herein shown and described.
