Description

' (NoModL) A G. W. BURTON.
SAW VISE.
No. 296,128. Patentd Apr. 1', 1884.
WITNESSES UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFIC GEORGE W. BURTON, OF BORDENTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,128, dated April 1, 1884.
- Applicatioufiled November 13, 1883.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BURTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bordentown, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Vises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved sawvise for holding saws rigidly in position for sharpening and setting the saw-teeth; and it consists in the longitudinal jaws A, pivoted at either end to the adjustable feet B and B, which are hinged together in pairs, each pair comprising a jaw and bench clamp actuated by a headed thumb-screw, G, and in the combination and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the drawings,Fjgu're 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the feet folded down; and Figs. .3 and 4 are detail views.
In the construction of my saw-vise I'employ two coincident longitudinal bars, A, comprising the jaws A, which are provided with a recess, a, at each end thereof to provide space for the saw-handle. The bars A have pivoted thereto at b b the adjustable feet Band Bflhaving theright-angular projecting arms 0, the bars being provided at each end with coincident recesses e e to form shoulders, against which in practice the arms 0 abut, in order to thus support in a horizontal position jaws (No model.)
A, which in practice hold the saw inclasped in ahorizontal plane and longitudinally. The adjustable feet B and B are hinged together, the foot B having cast integral therewith and projecting therefrom the hinge'bar b", which 0 is pivoted by means of pin in socket b of foot B. The adjustable feet B and B are formed to project slightly beyond the hingebar 12 where they are curved and widened to jointly form clamps D, composed of the jaws E and E. i
Through eyes F, provided in jaws 13, project the headed thumb-screws 0, thus forming a bench-clamp at either end of the saw-vise for securing the device in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 1; and it will be observed that in proportion, as by means of the thumbscrews, the saw-vise is tightened on the bench, the arms 0 tighten the grasp of the vise on the saw.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A saw-vise consisting of jaws A, having recesses 6, adjustable feet B and B, hinged together, and each having a projecting arm, 0, headed thumb-screws O, and clamps D, to clamp the device to a bench and to close the jaws, substantially as shown and described. 1
In testimony whereof I affix mysignaturein presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. BURTON.
