(MddeL) A. PO'TTS; BARBED METALLIC FENCING.

UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
ALBERT POTTS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BARBED METALLIC FENCING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,060, dated April 1, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT Forms, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Barbed Metallic Fencing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of an improved contrivance for securing wire barbs to metallic fencing-strips in a simple, cheap, and efficient way, whereby the strips, which are more desirable for use than wires, maybe armed with wire barbs, which are better than points out out of the edge of such strips, my method of connecting the barbs being cheaper and more efficient than other means of providingsuch strips with barbs, and also cheaper and better than the means of barbing wires, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a thin flat metallic strip as I prepare it for receiving the barbs, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a barbed strip constructed according to my invention.
I take a thin flat strap, a, of metal, and make notches b in the edges at suitable distances apart and at opposite points, and secure pointed wire barbs c thereto, by providing wires d of suitable length with pointed ends, bending said wires double at the middle in the form of wire staples, placing the wires across the strip from notch to notch, and twisting the ends together, so as to draw the bend of the staple Application filed Octoberlfi, 1883. (ModeL) damage animals by not being seen, and for other reasons; but the barbs formed on it by cutting the edges are very inferior, and so far no such simple and eflicient method of at taching other points has been contrived as to enable such strips to be used with attached barbs. Y
I am aware of the application to a fencestrip of pointed wires looped and twisted thereon, and of a pointed wire intertwisted with a second wire, the ends of which second wire are bent over the edges of the fence'strip.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a metallic fencing-strip, notched upon its edges, combined with pointed wire staples, the said staples being secured in place in the notches by twisting their pointed ends together, substantially as shown and described, whereby barbs are formed upon the metallic strip.
