"(C1, 40-124) United States Patent Visible filing systems have been constructed in various 7 forms requiring special apparatus and special cards in the operation thereof. A visible filing system herein described contemplates the provision of pockets of standard dimensions for holding commercially available and standard cards. A sheet or portion of a sheet has a plurality of uniformly spaced slits preferably transverse the longitudinal axis of the sheet or portion thereof. In a second sheet or a second portion of a sheet a plurality of tongues is formed by cutting the sheet. The tongues have a length approximating the width of the card and the point at which the tongue terminates in the second sheet is positioned below a slit in thefirst sheet a distance equal to the width of the card less the width of the margin of the card to be exposed. I

Assembly of the card holder is accomplished by insert ing the free end of a tongue through an appropriate slit. When the device is assembled, the sheet having the plurality of slits is contiguous to the sheet having the pinrality of tongues, the free end of each tongue respectively being inserted through and engaging a slit in the first sheet. In so doing, a pocket is formed by each slit and tongue combination.

Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a'visible card holder wherein simple'cuts in separate panels of the sheet form elements which cooperate to provide a plurality of pockets in an envelope for receiving and holding cards.

Another object of this invention is to provide a visible card holder having a plurality of spaced parallel cuts in one panel and a plurality of equally spaced tongues in a second panel with each of said tongues being inserted in an appropriate cut for forming a pocket which receives a card inserted through the cut and behind-the tongue.

A further object of this invention is to provide a visible card holder'having a plurality of spaced pockets in a panel, one end of each of said pockets respectively being at the edge of the panel.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a visible card holder susceptible to economical manufacture and available to the user at minimum cost.

Other objects and advantages more or less ancillary to the foregoing, and the manner in which all the various objects are realized, will appear in the following description, which, considered in-connec-tion with the accompanying drawings, sets forth the preferred embodiment of the invention.

As shown in the drawings, and particularly in Figs rl and 2, the visible card holder includes a front panel 10 formed from a sheet of paper-like material. The panel 3 10 is provided with punched holes 12 of standard location and spacing for removable insertion of the panel 10 in a binder or cover. A plurality of slits 1-4 is cut in the panel 10, the length of the slits being slightly longer than the length of a standard card to facilitate the insertion of the card through the slit 14. The slits 14 are spaced to provide an area for the exposure of a marginal portion of a card. V g Asshown in Fig. 3, a rear panel 16 of similar sizeto the panel 10 is formed of a sheet of material'having ge'n eral qualities of paper and is provided with punched holes a 12 for mounting in a cover in register with the panel 10;

A plurality of tongues 18 is formed in the panel 16 by a series of U -shaped cuts 20. The cuts are made in the form of an inverted U and overlap as necessary topro vide joinder of the tongue 18 to the panel 16 at each side.

In Fig. 4, a form of card holder is illustrated wherein the two front panels 10 and the two rear panels 16 areformed from a single sheet. In Fig. 5, a card holder is shown having the slits 14 in staggered relation. Thetongues 18 are of uniform width and are cut inthe panel 16 in staggered side-byside relationship. The tongues are uniform in length and the spacing of the free ends thereof corresponds to the spacing of the slits 14. When assembled the card holder of Fig. is folded in the mannerof that described in connection with the holder of Fig. 4 and results in the envelope with pockets in each outer panel 10.

In Fig. 6, the card holder is illustrated as having a pair of front panels and rear panels 16 formed from a single sheet. The slits 14 are positioned in offset relation and have one end of each slit terminating at the center fold 24. By virtue of the oifset, a continuous panel is provided at the fold line. This feature also accepts maximum width of cards between the fold line 24 and the holes 12.

The tongues 18 are formed by chevron cuts 28 with tabs 30 at the apex of the cuts 28. The tabs 30 project through the slits 14 for guiding the card 22 behind the tongues 18.

In Fig. 7, the panels 10 have a series of slits 32 lllustrated as being of various forms. Tongues 34 may also have corresponding irregular forms as dictated by the design of the card 22 to be inserted in the holder or by the arrangement of the identification material on the margin of the card 22.

It is also understood that where physical dimensions of the cards will permit, such as calling cards, two rows of pockets on each panel are contemplated. Also the folding arrangement between the panels is only illustrative of a preferred form and not limiting since other folding arrangements may be utilized.

Having thus described this invention in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, and having set forth the best mode contemplated of carrying out this invention, I state that the subject which I regard as being my invention is particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed in what is claimed, it being understood that equivalents or modifications of, or substitutions for, parts of the above specifically described embodiments of the invention may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in what is claimed.

What is claimed is:

l. A visible card holder comprising a supporting sheet having a plurality of slits therein, and a second sheet having a plurality of tongues joined thereto and engageable with the slits.

A visible card file comprising a first and second panel, slits formed in the first panel, and tongues formed in the second panel, the free end of each of said tongues projecting through a slit, the length of said tongue being less than the width of a card to be placed in said slit and behind said tongue, said tongues being in the form of chevrons symmetrical along the medial line of said slits.

10. A visible card file comprising a first and second panel, slits formed in the first panel, and tongues formed in the second panel, the free end of each of said tongues projecting through a slit, the length of said tongue being less than the width of a card to be placed in said slit and behind said tongue, said slits being positioned with one. end of each slit respectively adjacent an edge of the first panel.

11.,A visible card file comprising a first and second panel, slits formed in the first panel, and tongues formed in the second panel, the free end of each of said tongues projecting through a slit, the length of said tongue being less than the width of a card to be placed in said slit and behind said tongue, said slits being positioned with one end of each slit respectively adjacent an edge of the first panel, said tongues being in the form of chevrons symmetrical along the medial line of said slits.

2. -A visible card holder comprising a supporting sheet having a plurality of parallel slits therein, and a second sheet having a plurality of tongues joined thereto and engageable with the slits.

3. A visible card holder comprising a supporting sheet having a plurality of slits therein, a second sheet contiguous to the first sheet, and a plurality of tongues joined to the second sheet and engaged with the slits.

4. In a visible card file a series of slits formed in a panel, a second panel, tongues formed from the material of said second panel and joined thereto in a series corresponding to the spacing of said slits, the free end of said tongues projecting through a corresponding slit whereby a card may be inserted through said slit and between said tongues and said second panel.

5. In a visible card file a series of parallel slits formed in a panel, a second panel, tongues formed on said second panel and joined thereto in a series corresponding to the spacing of said slits, the free end of said tongues projecting through a corresponding slit whereby a card may be inserted through said slit and between said tongues and said second panel. i

A visible card file comprising a first and second panel, slits formed in the first panel, and tongues formed in the second panel, the free end of each of said tongues projecting through a slit, the length of said tongue being less than the width of a card to be placed in said slit and behind said tongue, said tongues being side by side throughout a portion of their length.

13. A visible card file comprising a first and second panel, slits formed in the first panel, and tongues formed in the second panel, the free end of each of said tongues projecting through a slit, the length of said tongue being less than the width of a card to be placed in said slit and behind said tongue, said tongues beingside by side throughout a portion of their length, said slits being displaced in accordance with the displacement of said tongues in relation to the location of the free ends thereof.

A visible card file comprising first panels joined at a fold, second panels joined to the first panels at folds, slits formed in the first panels, and tongues formed in the second panels, the free ends of each of said tongues projecting through a slit when said first and second panels are folded in contiguous relation, the length of said tongue being less than the width of a card to be placed in said slit and behind said tongue.

15. A visible card file comprising first panels joined at a fold, second panels joined to the first panels at folds, slits formed in the first panels, and tongues formed said tongue in the second panels, the free ends of each of said tongues projecting through a slit when said first and second panels are folded in contiguous relation, the length of said tongue being less than the Width of a card to be placed in said slit and behind said tongue, said slits having one end respectively adjacent the fold between the first panels.

16. A visible card file comprising first panels joined at a fold, second panels joined to the first panels at folds,

slits formed in the first panels, and tongues formed in 10 the second panels, the free ends of each of said tongues projecting through a slit when said first and second panels are folded in contiguous relation, the length of said tongue being less than the width of a card to be placed slits in the other of said first panels. 1
