NITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. ANDERSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I HALF TO SPIVALO & FORMAN, OF SAME PLACE. I
AIR AND DUST SEPARATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,969, dated April 1, 1884. r
Application filed January 7, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN I. ANDERSON, of
the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Air and Dust Separators; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description thereof. I
My invention relates to means for separating air and dust, and it is especially useful in connection with the dust-chambers or the purifiers of flour-mills.
It consists in the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, as will be more fully explained by reference to the ac companyingdrawings, in which Figure l is a view of the side of a mill dust-chamber and chimney, showing the fan. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fan and the opening in the chimney in which it revolves. Fig.3 is a front View of the fan in position. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken through the drum and the plane of the axis, as shown in Fig. 2.
In the separation of fine dust in flouringmills, suction-fans or blowers are used, and the dust drawn out by the fans is forced into a dust-chamber, A. In order to continue the operation, it is necessary to have a chimney, B, through which the current of air can escape, and this carries off a considerable quantity of impalpable dust, which settles in the neighborhood and causes a nuisance. To overcome this I cut a circular hole in the side of the chimney, just above the dust-chamber,
and journal in it a fan-wheel with vanes C, 5 I
inclined like those of a propeller. This wheel is fitted so as to just turn within the hole, and has a hub, D, as shown. The chimney is closed above the wheel, and the current of air which escapes from the surplus within the dust-cham- 0 her strikes against the vanes in passing through the wheel, and causes the latter to rotate rapidly. The effect of this appears to be to causea reactionary current, which changes the direction of the dust particles, and de- 5 fleets them back within the chimney, so that they settle within the dust-chamber, while the air passes out through the spaces between the inclined vanes of the wheel clear and free from dust.
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y A dust chamber into which dust and air are forced by a blast apparatus, and a chimney, B, closed at the top, and having a circular opening in one side, in combination with a fan having inclined vanes, and constructed to rotate in the said opening, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I havehereunto set my hand.
hi JOHN P. ANDERSON.
