. UNITED STATES PATENT UFFI CE.
DANIEL ALISON RADLEY, OF LAVVRENGEBURG, MISSOURI.
COPY-BOOK, COPY-CASE, AND MOVABLE COPY-PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,941, dated April 1, 18814.
Application filed April 3,1883.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, DANIEL A. HADLEY, of Lawrenceburg, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Copy-Book andOopy-Oase and Movable Copy-Plates, to be used in learning or studying the art of penmanship; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my case, and Fig. 2 a view of a copy-plate.
The case is made of paper, leather, wood, or any material suitable for making book covers, which it resembles. It consists of two leaves, A B, which are flexibly connected to- 'gether at C, so as to fold one upon the other when not in use, and to lie out flat, as in Fig. 1, when in use. a
On the inner side of leaf A is formed a recess, c, to receive the copy-book. Adjacent to recess and upon opposite sides thereof are secured hooks or clips I), to receive the ends of the copy-plates, which extend over the recess and hold the paper of the copy-book down smoothly. Buttons or other suitable fastenings may be employed in place of the hooks or clips I).
On the inner side of leaf B are formed recesses e, to receive the copy-plates,and recesses f for the penholders or pencils. Buttons a, of thin material are pivoted to leaf B, and serve to secure in place theplates and pen-holders. cesses 1', into which are extended the projecting parts of hooks b when the case is closed,
thus enabling the leaves to lie close together.
The copy-plates a consist of a thin brass, tin, or other metallic plate or slat of any other suitable rigid material, upon which is glued, pasted, or otherwise fastened a copyslip, or
In leaf B are also formed rea (ModeL) rather two copy-slips, one on each side of the plate. The copy-slips leave exposed the ends of the supporting-plates, so that the slips will not be injured by the hooks b or the buttons 9, nor be soiled in handling. These plates are arranged in a series, graded and numbered 1 2 3 4 5, 860., as shown at d in the drawings. At h are shown copy-plates placed in positon over the copy-book recess for writing.
In the case thus constructed there is provided on leaf A a receptacle for the copy-book,
which prevents the paper thereof from getting torn, ruffled, dog-eared,or soiled while in use, and when the paper is all written upon it can be removed and its place supplied with new paper. On leaf B are provided convenient receptacles for the copy-plates and writing implements, so that they are kept in order and are always convenient for use. The leaves A B, when the case is not in use in writing, are folded closely together, and thus while the contents of the case are held in position the whole are effectually preserved from soiling or other damage.
WVhat I claim as my invention is p 1. The case recessed, as described, to receive the copy-book, and provided with hooks b, in combination with the copy-plates, by
which the paper is held down smoothly.
2. The case consisting of the flexibly-connected leaves A 13, provided with recesses c e f i, hooks b, and buttons 9, all substantially as described.
3. I The copy-plate consisting of a rigid supporting-plate having secured to it, as described, the copy-slips, which leave exposed the ends of said plates, as and for the purpose described. I
. DANIEL ALISON HADLEY.
