GEORGE A. STILES, OF WEST GARDNER, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OARMI MATTHEW PARKER, OF FITGHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
WOOD-SCREW.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,833, dated March 25, 1884.
Application filed March 30, 1883. Renewed December 3, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. STILEs, of West Gardner, in the county of \Iorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented 5 certain new and useful Improvements in Wood- Screws; and I do hereby declare, that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and [0 use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents side views of my improved wood-screws, and Fig. 2 represents longitudinal sectional views of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicatecorresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to all kinds and classes of screws to be used for wood-work;
20 and it consists in the improved construction of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the head of the screw, which may have the usual nick', B, for the insertion of the screwdriver. The stem or shank shown at O is made smaller than usual in screws having a thread and head of corresponding size, by 30 which I prevent splitting of the wood in drivin; the screw. Near the head A the stem is enlarged to form a collar, D, the lower end of which is beveled where it merges into the shank of the screw,,as shown at E. This beveled collar D E operates to keep the screw 55 steady and hold it firmly in the wood when it is turned full into the same or driven home,
so that while my improved screw will never split the wood, yet at the same time it will bind as firmly in the wood as when a screw of 0 larger size is used, and by the use of which the Wood into which it is driven would be apt to split.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesa The improved wood-screw herein shown and described, having a reduced stem or shank, 0, provided with a collar or annular enlargement, D E, at its upper end, where it connects with the head A, as a new article of manufacture.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A, STILES.
