Description
D. BURCH. Side-Hill Plow.
Patented Aug. 14, 186.
.PEIERS, PHOTO UTHOG HER.
UNITED STATES PATENT Enron.
.LYMAN D. BURCH, OF SHERBURNE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 29,567, dated August 14, 1860.
' Sherburne, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Plowing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a top view of my improvement.
Similar letters denote like parts in both figures.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a mold-board, and B the beam; 0 O, the handles. These parts are constructed in all respects like the ordinary side-hill plow with a reversible mold-board. To each side of beam B, I attach a strong arm, D D. Said arms project laterally and nearly at right angles from the beam eight or ten inches.
E E represent two rods of iron connected to arms D at or near their outer ends, extending forward parallel, or nearly so, with beam B.
F represents what I term a cross-head, connected to the end of beam B at or near its center by an eye and rod, as seen at G. This part-that is to say, the cross-head-may be adjusted vertically to regulate the depth of the furrow.
H represents a clevis of ordinary construction; i, a bolt. j represents a slot extending the entire length of cross-head F, connected at each end only.
K K K represent notches, into which bolti maybe dropped to increase or diminish the side draft.
When mold-board A is turned or, in other words, shifted to the opposite side of beam B, clevis H can be instantly changed to the opposite side by the attendant. This is accomplished by taking hold of cord L.
The object ofmy improvement is to enable the team, when attached to the plow, one in advance of the other, to travel in the furrow,
whereby I am enabled to break the ground,
when used'on a side-hill plow, above the team.
By my improved beam attachmentsteep-side hills may be broken or, in other words, plowed and brought into a state of cultivation, whereas without this improvement, and as plows have been heretofore constructed, large tracts ofland remain uncultivated.
Very great advantages are derived by the use of my improved beam attachment in breaking land in immediate proximity to fences, ditches, and trees, as it will readily be seen that they may be approached much nearer than with the ordinary draft.
Havingdesoribed my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination and arrangement of arms D, rods E, slotted cross-head F, clevis H, cord L, or its equivalent, substantially as set forth, for the purposes herein shown and described.
LYMAN D. BURCH.
