SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,515, dated March 25, 1884.

-Be it known that I, EDWARD F. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravenna, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nailing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification,- Figure 1 is a plan. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a verticalsection at the'line y in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical crosssection at the line at in Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a similar section with carrier a turned forward in position to receive anail.
Carrier a is of a thickness to receive but one nail at a time in its slot a. It is turned on its axis a quarter ofa revolution to receive a nail in a perpendicular position from the inclined slotted trough or conductor b anddischarge it in ahorizontal position in the trough c. I Carrier a is pivoted to the upright part of conductor Z). To the side of carrier a is attached spring 0, having its side edge even with the outer end of slot at for the head of the nail to rest on. When carriera is turning to deliver a nail in trough c, andits slot at is in nearly a horizontal position the inner side of spring 6 comes in contactwith the side of trough 0, which presses the spring away from the side of carrier at and permits the nail to fall from the slot into trough c. The lower side of slot at next to spring 6 is beveled to allow the nail to fall. A thin piece of steel, 0, is attached to the side of trough c, to press out spring 6 and prevent wearing away the side of the trough. Carrier a is turned by means of rod (1, driver it, levers b 12 b cord 1,

the upright part of conductor 1). Trough c is also held from moving endwise by being formed on its lower side to fit in groove 9 in the upper side of frame f at right angles to the trough. Conductor b is firmly bolted through its horizontal part or foot in groove In the drawings the machine is shown with two carriers and the mechanism described for operating them in order to drive two nails at once. One of the conductors b, with its carrier a, trough 0, rod d, driver n, and pitman n is adjustable at different distances from the other driver by being bolted to frame f through a slot, 9. In making the adjustment its pitman n slides on rod 6, connected with levers b b. Each of thepitmen n may beeasily disconnected from rod e,when but one of drivers n is to be used, by turning the pivoted cap a, which retains the pitman on the rod, and thus allowing the end of the pitman to fall from the rod. Slotted stops 0 0 are adjustable in grooves c? 0 in frame f, for the purpose of retaining in proper position a cigar-box or other article to be nailed, which is to be held in contact with .the end of trough c.
In operating the machine, the nails, which are placed promiscuously ininclined hopper h, attached to conductor I), slide down into the conductor, where they adjust themselves vertioally in a row by their points falling through the slotted bottom of the conductor, leaving.

By pressing down with the foot on treadle t the movement of levers b b b slides forward driver n, and when lug t on the driver comes in contact with collar m it moves forward rod d and turns carrier a a quarterof a circle, thus bringing slot at in the carrier to an upright position, where it receives a nail fromconduetor b. Collar m is adjusted to such a position on rod 01 that when carrier at has been jthus turned the forward end of driver it will have advanced to the end of trough" c and driven a nail. By releasing the pressure on treadle t the reaction of spring a reverses the movement of levers b b b and draws back driver n until its lug i is in contact with nut a, and then both driver a and rod d move back until carrier a is turned back and spring e pressed out by the side of trough c, to allow the nail in slot to, which is then in a horizontal position, to fall in trough cin front of driver a, with its head toward the driver. By again pressing down treadle t the driver a moves forward and forces the nail into the boX or other article that is held in contact with the end of trough c by stops 0 0. As the nail will be inclined in the trough by reason of its point being the lowest, to avoid the necessity of constructing with the same inclination the part of frame f on which the box to be nailed rests,
I attach a slight spring, 8, to the bottom of trough c, at or near its end, to project upward into the trough and raise the point of the nail, in order that the nail may be level while being driven. The head of the nail while passing over spring 8 forces it down. The under side of trough c is cut away to receive spring 5, and the top of that part of the spring which projects into trough c is of a similar form to the bottom of the trough, in order to guide the point of the nail in a direct line. The two sides or sections of conductor 1), forming the slot between them in which the nails hang by their heads, may be farther separated, to enlarge theslot for larger nails, by means of the end piece, 3, which attaches them together at their outer ends, being slotted for the purpose of adjustment.
. I claim as my invention- 1. In a nailing-machine, theoscillating carrier a, having a horizontal or nearly horizontal aXis and a slot, at, provided with spring 6, and formed, as shown, of sufficient dimensions to rece'ivebut one nail hanging by its head on the circumference of the carrier, in combination with trough a, substantially as described.
2. The inclined slotted conductor b, in combination with carrier a, arranged to oscillate in a vertical or nearly vertical plane, and pivoted to the conductor, the carrier being aetuated by a suitable mechanism, and having slot a, provided with spring e, and formed as shown, substantially as described.
3. The driver a and trough o, in combination, by suitable means, with rod d and carrier a, having slot a, provided with spring 6, and formed as shown, and suitable actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
4. The rod cl, provided with collar m and nut 01., in combination with driver n, carrier a, having slot at, provided with spring 0, and formed as shown, trough c, and suitable actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
5. The driver 02, trough 0, rod d, and carriera, having slot a, provided with spring e, and formed as shown, in combination,as shown, with pitman n levers I) 1) b spring of, and treadle t, substantially as described.
6. Carrier a, having slot 0., provided with spring 6, and formed as shown, in combination with rod (1, nut a, collar m, driver a, formed with lug '6, rod e, and pitman a, provided with the pivoted cap of, substantially as described.
7. The oscillating carrier a, having slot a, provided with spring 6, and formed as shown, in combination with conductor b, driver t, trough c, and suitable actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
8. The frame f, formed with grooves c 0 1 in combination with the slotted adjustable stops 0 0, trough 0, carrier a, having slot on, provided with spring e, and formed as shown, driver a, and suitable actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
9. The adjustable trough c, formed to fit the transverse groove 9 in frame f, and with slotted lug 0 in combination with conductor 1) and carrier a, having slot a, provided wit-h spring 6, and formed as shown, substantially as described.
10. The trough 0, provided with spring 8, in combination with driver a and suitable actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
11. The oscillating carrier a, having slot a formed as shown, and provided with spring 0 and actuating mechanism, the carrier being pivoted to conductor 1), the driver 11., pitman a, and trough c, in combination with a similar carrier, driver, pitman, and trough, rod
