Be it known that I, PETER NAPOLEON BRETOX, a Canadian subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a citizen of Montreal, residing at Montreal, in the district of Montreal and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Booking to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Myinvcntion relates to a novel device for holding and carrying an assortment of books, pamphlets, 850., designed mainly for the use of school-pupils in carrying their school-books, stationery, &c., to and from school, or for bookagents, canvassers, peddlers, and others whose duties require the frequent carrying by hand of books and papers; and my said invention of two equal-sized sections united-by straps, between which casing the books are held and secured; a box or compartment for carrying pens, pencils, and other writing material; a handle for carrying the device; and a waterproof covering for enrelopin g the entire apparatus, all as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be pointed out in the claim.

This invention has for its object the construction of a simple and convenient device by which to enable school-children and others to carry packages of books and writing material without injury to them, and at the same time provision is made so that in falling weather the entire device and its contents may be enveloped and protected from injury. This is accomplished by the devices forming the subject-matter of the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form. a part hereof; and in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent a top and bottom Fig. 3, a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4; is aview in perspective, illustrating the device when in use in falling weather, with the waterproof cover in position over the same.

A and B are two covering-boards, of wood or any other suitable material, and of a size sulficient to fully cover any books or other articles that might have to be carried by them. Near the edges of these covering-boards small slots 1 c are made, through which the straps O 0, preferably of leather, are run. Each of these straps embraces both covering-boards, and they are of suflicient length to allow said boards to be separated, so as to take in the required number of books.

D is a box or compartment for holding pencils, pens, or other similar writing utensils, provided with a sliding or hinged lid, D, as preferred.

E is a water-proof cover composed of a top portion, E, and dependent sides E, and of a size sufficie-nt to entirely cover the boards A B and their contents. This protector or cover, when not in use, is rolled up and secured in the cover-straps a a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. \Vhen desired for'use, it is unroiled and spread over the hook-protector, as shown in Fig. 4. One end of,each of the straps a ais fixed to the covering-board, by tacks a or otherwise, and the other end is held by hooks or buttons 1) b, which are screwed or otherwise fixed to the covering-board A, opposite to the tacks a or, instead of these hooks or buttons, buckles may he used.

F is the handle by which the device is carried, secured to the cover-board A by fastenings A at each side thereof.

F is a slot or opening made in the top portion ofthewater-proofcovering, through which to admit the handle F, by which to carry the device when the water-proof is in use.

By reason of the stout side boards the books are always kept securely in position without liability to be injured, and by the use of the waterproof covering the books are at all times protected from the weather.

The device, or, as I term it, book-protector, composed of the several parts hereinbcfore set forth, forms a very complete and useful article for children and others to carry their books. 8rd, without injury to the same.

The object of this is to form a stout and rigid support for the books, that will securely hold them in a flat position, with no liability of injury to the same from their sides and edges from external injury incident to the holder being dropped or struck against.

I am aware that it is not new to employ narrow strips of n'iaterial placed at thesides or edges of books in connection with straps whereby to secure and carry the same; also, that a water in'ooi" covering has previously been employed in connection with shawlstraps to protect packages of clothing-(Eco. I do not therefore wish to be understood as laying any and arrangement going to make up the completed article, as set forth in the foregoing s peci fieation and pointed outin the following claiin that is to say:
