I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,176, dated February 26, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARoELLUs S. ALEXAN- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moorefield, West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cartridge Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in cartridge implements, and is designed particularly for seating a wad of peculiar construction, described in an application for patent filed by me simultaneously herewith.
The invention has for its object to provide a device by means of which the mucilage on the wad is evenly moistened andin a much shorter space of time than is required to perform the same operation by hand, and the wad guided into the mouth of the cartridge.
To this end my invention consists of a small cylinder the opening in which is slightly greater in diameter than the wad, which is forced down through it by a ramrod, the said cylinder being provided with an interior porous collar kept moist by the application of water or mucilage, and having a central opening of a diameter slightly less than that of the opening in the cylinder, so that as the wad passes through the opening its gummed periphery is brought into contact with the moist sponge, all as hereinafter set forth.
In order that those skilled in the art may know how to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a central vertical section of the device, with a shell in position to receive the wad. a
A represents the top of the cylinder, and is formed, as shown, with a flaring mouth and a depending annular flange, at, extending down a' sufficient distance to envelop the sponge B and extend a short distance over the top of the bottom section, 0, over which it fits snugly. I may fasten the two sections A and 0 together by a bayonetjoint, or by screws, if desired; but for ordinary usea fastening is not necessary. jections e, which, when the parts are in place, pin the sponge to the lower section. The rest for the sponge, and the receptacle for the open end of the shell, is formed by the part D. It is bored out centrally to accommodate the shell, and has a shoulder, f, against which the shell rests. This shoulder is of a thickness equal to that of the wall of the shell, so as to afford a smooth surface over which the wad passes on its way to the shell.
In order that the mucilage may not be rubbed off the wad in its passage from the sponge to the shell, the shoulder f may be notched in order to present less surface for the wad to rub. against.
In the operation of the device, the wad is introduced into the upper end of the tube and forced down by means of a ramrod. In its passage the gummed edges come in contact with the sponge and are dampened. Additional pressure on the rod forces the wad down past the shoulders f into the shell, where it is fastened by the dampened gummed portions coming in contact with the shell.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In an implement for dampening and seating gummed wads in cartridges, the combination, with the cylindrical portion adapted to receive the wad and guide it into the shell, substantially as described, of the sponge having a central opening for the passage of the wad placed within said cylindrical portion.
2. In an implement for seating wads in cartridges, the cylindrical body composed of the portion A, provided with the projections e and the depending flange a. and theportion 0, having the shoulder f, in combination with the sponge B, substantially as described.
3. In an implement for seating wads in cartridges, the cylindrical body composed of the portion A, provided with the projections e and. the depending flange a, and the portion 0, having the notched shoulder, as described, in combination with the sponge B, substantially as described.
