Claims. (Cl. 78"1) This invention relates to a device for deforming one of a plurality of interfitting parts to lock said parts to-,
gether and more particularly to a tool for supporting a pair of apertured plates with a wire threaded through perforated tabs on the plates and for flattening the wire Another object of the invention is to provide a device for supporting a pair of plates having perforated tabs. with the end of a U-shaped wire passing therethrough and for flattening the wire on opposite sides of the tab to secure the wire thereto and formoving the wire longi tudinally relative to the platestopermit the flattening of said wire' at different places thereon. The present device 1 5-'is designed to securethe end plates 20 to form 'a component of a cable supporting device or multiple drop wire clamp. Each of the wedge plates 20 has aset of three tabs 22 punch-formed thereon in predetermined uniform spaced relation to each other along the centerlineof the plate, each tab 22 being 1 disposed at right angles to the plate and having a perfoforated tabs" thereon and the ends of .a" U-shaped wire" threaded through said perforated tabs. The central block has a set of punches on opposite sides thereof adapted to fit through the apertures in thetplates and engage one side of the wire, and the end blocks have a set of punches aligned with the punches onthe central block for engaging the oppositesides'of thewire, wherebythejdevice, with the parts in position between the blocks; may be placed in a press and the press actuated to impart move-.

The ends of the U-shaped tail wire 18 are inserted through the perforations 24 in the tabs 22, of the pair of wedge plates 20 with the ends of the wires extending through and spaced from the endmost tab 22, as indicated in Fig. 9. The ends of the wire 18 are then deformed to form fiattened'portions 30 having flat surfaces 131 engageable with one faceof the wedge platesand having laterally extending shoulders 32 engageable with the end tab 22. The tail wire 18 is also deformed adjacent to two of thetabs'22 on each plate 20 to form flattened portions 33 having lateral projections with shoulders :34

Hinge pins 59 pass'through bores 60 in the lugs 56 and through slots 61-in the lugs 55 for supporting theend blocks 57 for pivotal movemerit about the pins 59 and for limited rectilinear movement toward and away from the block 40. The forward surfaces 63 on the lugs 55 engage flat surfaces or shoulders 64 on the end blocks 57 and serve as guidesfor guiding the blocks 57 for movement toward the block' 40in parallel relation thereto. Means are provided for longitudinally moving the tail wire 18 relative to the plates 20, which includes a head 72 forming a section of the handle 41 and mounted for movement relative to the handle 41 to and from a retracted position shown in Fig. 6 and an extended position shown in Fig. 1. The handle 41 and the head 72 thereof are provided with grooves 73 and 74, respectively, for receiving and supporting the tail wire 18 therein; The head 72 is fixed to one endof a rod 76, which is slidably supported in a longitudinal bore 77 in the handle 41 and has an enlarged in termediate portion 78 slidable in an enlarged portion 79 of the bore. 77. l. :A device for deforminga U-shaped par'tof a plural- .iity'o'f interfitting parts to secure jsaid' U s'hapedpart to theother parts" thereofcomprising a first holder having" twosets of punches disposed inopp'osite directions, a'pair of second holders each having a set of punches cooperable with a set of the punches on said first holder for deforming portions of said U-shaped part, means mounting said second holders on opposite sides of said first holder and for movement of said holders and the sets of punches toward one another and with portions of said second holders engageable with a pair of pressure applying members for moving said second holders toward each other, means on said holders for supporting the interfitting parts therebetween in a first position relative to each other and for holding said other parts against movement in one direction, and means for moving said U-shaped part relative to said other parts to dispose said parts in a second position relative to each other.
2. A device for securing the ends of a U-shaped wire to a pair of wedge plates to form a component of a cable clamp wherein the plates have a plurality of apertures and a plurality of tabs extending'substantially perpendicularly therefrom and wherein the end portions of the U-shaped wire are threaded through the perforated tabs, said device comprising a first holder having a pair of opposed parallel faces engageable with said wedge plates and having a set of punches projecting from each of said faces and adapted to extend into the apertures in said plates and into engagement with one side of the end portions of the U-shaped Wire, a pair of second holders disposed on opposite sides of said first holder and each having a set of punches engageable with the other side of said wire and aligned with the punches on said first holder for deforming portions of said wire, means for mounting said punch holders for movement toward and away from one another and with portions of the second holders engageable with a pair of relatively movable pressure applying members, whereby said punch holders with the plates and wire disposed therebetween may be placed in a press and actuated to cause the punches to deform the wire.

A device for securing the ends of a U-shaped wire to a pair of wedge plates to form a component of a cable clamp wherein the plates have a plurality of apertures and a plurality of tabs extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom and wherein the end portions of the U-shaped wire are threaded through the perforated tabs, said device comprising a first holder having a pair of opposed parallel faces engageable with said wedge plates and having a set of punches projecting from each of said faces and adapted to extend into the apertures in said plates and into engagement with one side of the end portions of the U-shaped wire, a pair of second holders disposed on opposite sides of said first holder and each having a set of punches engageable with the other side of said wire and aligned with the punches on said first holder for deforming portions of said wire, means for mounting said punch holders for movement toward and away from one another and with portions of the apertures in said plates and into engagement with" the second holders engageable with a pair of relatively movable pressure applying members, whereby said punch holders with the plates and wire disposed therebetween may be placed in a press and actuated to cause the deformation of the wire, a handle extending from said first holder for supporting the U-shaped wire and positioning the end portions thereof in a predetermined first position relative to said plates, and means on said handle for moving said wire to a second position with the end portions thereof in a second predetermined position relative to the plates.

A device for securing the ends of a U-shaped wire to a pair of wedge plates to form a component of a cable clamp wherein the plates have a plurality of apertures and a plurality of tabs extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom and wherein the end portions of the U-shaped wire are threaded through the perforated tabs, said device comprising a first holder having a pair of opposed parallel faces engageable with said wedge plates and having a set of punches with ends thereof projecting from said faces and adapted to extend through the apertures in said plates and into engagement with one side of the end portions of the wire, a pair of second holders disposed on opposite sides of said first holder and having opposed outwardly directed faces against which pressure may be applied to effect movement of the holders towards each other, each of said second holders having a set of punches engageable with the other side of the wire and cooperable with the punches on said first holder for flattening portions of said wire, means on said first holder for mounting said second holders for movement toward and away from one another whereby said device with the plates and U-shaped wire disposed between said first and said second holders maybe placed in a press and the press actuated to move said holders toward each other to cause the flattening of portions of said wire, a handle extending from said first holder and having an end section mounted for movement to and from a retracted and an extended position and engageable with a portion of said U-shaped wire for moving it longitudinally from a first position to a second position relative to the plates, and means on said handle for actuating said end section from said retracted position to said extended position.

A device for securing the ends of a U-shaped wire to a pair of wedge plates to form a component of a cable clamp, wherein the plates have a plurality of apertures and plurality of tabs extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom and wherein the end portions of the U-shaped wire are threaded through the perforated tabs, said device comprising a first holder having a pair of opposed parallel faces engageable with said wedge plates and having a set of punches with ends thereof projecting from said faces and adapted to extend through one side of the end portions of the wire, a pair of second holders disposed on opposite sides of said first holder and having opposed outwardly directed faces against which pressure may be applied to effect movement of the holders towards each other, each of said second holders having a set of punches engageable with the other side of the wire and cooperable with the punches on said first holder for flattening portions of said wire, means on said first holder for mounting said second holders for movement toward and away from one another whereby said device with the plates and U-shaped wire disposed between said first and said second holders may be placed in a press and the press actuated to move said holders toward each other to cause, the flattening of portions of said wire, a handle extending from said first holder and having a movable end section engageable with a portion of said U-shaped wire for moving it longitudinally from a first position to a second position relative to the plates, a plunger slidably mounted in said handle for supporting said end section for movement to and from retracted and extended positions, resilient means for moving said end section to and yieldably maintaining it in said retracted position, and cam means mounted on said handle for moving said plunger and said end section from' said retracted position to said extended position.
