TYPE CARRIER FCR TELEGRAPH TYPE PRINTING APPARATUS Filed May 2, 1955 In ventor Pan/mo G. G k/ FF! TH A ttorn e y United Saates Patent TYPE CARRIER FOR TELEGRAPH TYPE PRINTING APPARATUS Ronald George Griflith, Mount Royal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Application May 2, 1955, Serial No. 505,480
Claims priority, application Great Britain May 3, 1954 2 Claims. (Cl. 197-53) This invention relates to telegraph printing apparatus wherein aggregate motion mechanism is provided for moving a type carrier so as to select type faces for printing, such as is described in British patent specification 441,090.
With such telegraph printing mechanism wherein the a type carrier is traversed to produce letter spaced printing,
considerable difiiculty is met in providing a light type carrier mechanism in such a manner that a printing hammer mechanism has access to the end of the shank of the type positioned for printing. Difliculty is also encountered with such type carrier mechanism in avoiding obstruction by it of the reading of previously printed characters. The object of this invention is to provide a type carrier, for use with such telegraph printing apparatus, of light and simplified construction, which is arranged so as to be readily demounted, and wherein type members are easily changed.
According to the present invention, a number of parallel rows of type members are supported in the type carrier so that the type faces lie on a part-cylindrical surface with the rows spaced axially and extending circumferentially, and each type member is slidable radially in its support so as to be operated by a printing hammer and is brought into the printing position by a combination of axial and angular movement of the type carrier. Preferably the part-cylindrical surface extends in an arc of less than 180 degrees so as to provide ready access for the printing hammer. Each type member may be springurged towards the axis of the cylinder so that it automatically returns to its original position when operated by the printing hammer.
In a simple form of construction, the type members are mounted between a pair of curved plates which are slotted to permit the sliding movements of the shanks of the members and the rear plate may be made removable to leave all the type members retained in the front plate under the control of their springs, and thus allow changing of type members.
A type carrier in accordance with the invention and suitable for use in apparatus as shown in the aforesaid application will now be described in more detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure '1 is a perspective view; and
Figure 2 is a detailed view showing the construction of a type member.
The main body of the type carrier is constituted by a pair of part-cylindrical curved plates 1' and 2 which extend over an arc of less than 180 to allow free operation of the printing hammer. The plates are secured at their ends to blocks 3 and 4, the outer plate 1 being held by screws 5 and the inner plate 2 being held by screws 6. The blocks 3 and 4 are mounted on posts 7 and 8 which in use are inserted in corresponding sockets in the mounting 82 shown in U. S. application, Serial No.
504,853 filed April 29, 1955. The post 8 is formed with a groove 9 which co-operates with a lock in the mounting and the type carrier as a whole is thus designed to be readily demountable since it can be readily attached to and removed from its mounting by means of a simple sliding motion.
The type carrier supports four rows of type members having shanks 12 and faces 13. The shanks 12 slide in slots in the plates 1 and 2 and each is urged towards the axis of the cylindrical surface, that is to say, the right as seen in Figure 2 by means of a spring 14, one end of which abuts against the plate 1 and the other end of which is located in an opening 15. By removing the screws 6 the complete plate 2 may be removed and all the type members are retained in position since each type face 13 is pressed against the plate 1 by means of its spring 14. This greatly simplifies maintenance of the type carrier.
The type members are arranged in four vertically spaced rows each containing sixteen members and are arranged to be actuated by a printing hammer 230 shown in the aforesaid application. In order to bring any selected type member into the printing position, the type carrier is given an angular and a vertical motion, being registered in position as described in the aforesaid application.
I claim:
l. A type carrier for a telegraph type printing apparatus comprising parallel front and rear arcuate bearing members, and readily removable means for securing said members in parallel relation, to mount said arcuate bearing members to have a common axis, each of said bearing members having a part-cylindrical surface extending in an arc of less than degrees about said common axis, a plurality of type members, each of said type members extending between said front and rear bearing members, means including said front and rear bearing members for supporting said type members so that each has slidable movement between said front and rear bearing members, said type members being arranged in parallel rows which are spaced axially and extend circumferentially with respect to said axis, said type members bearing type faces which lie in a part cylindrical convex surface parallel to and in front of the said front bearing member, whereby any one of said type members may be brought selectively into a predetermined printing position by moving said carrier axially along and angularly about its axis, and a plurality of springs mounted in operative relation to said type members when said arcuate bearing members are secured together in parallel relation so that each of said springs urges one of said type members towards said common axis and so that upon removal of said securing means to release the rear bearing member from the front bearing member, all of said type members are retained by the said front bearing member under the control of said springs.
2. A type carrier according to claim 1 for use in a telegraph printing apparatus including a printing hammer, said carrier also comprising means for detachably mounting it upon said printing apparatus, said mounting means being located on said carrier at points spaced away from the said common axis, whereby movement of the printing hammer through said axis is permitted.
