3 Claims. (Cl. 2-175) The present invention relates to a felt hat of the double brim type.

It is an object of the invention to provide a hat of the double brim type having a preformed stiffened front portion providing a snapped down brim appearance.

This is accomplished according to the present invention by providing a preformed stiff visor member which is interposed between the layers of the double brim construction and which extends across the front of the hat. The visor member which is enclosed in the double brim is substantially crescent shaped and is also downwardly curved toward the edge so that when it is secured in position the points of the crescent extend to substantially the midpoint of the crown, and the visor member provides a stifi front portion for the hat.

Other features and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the specification and claims when considered in connection with the drawings in which:

The invention is herein illustrated as applied to a fur felt hat having a double brim construction, although it is to be understood that it can be applied to other felt hats having this type of construction.

As shown in the drawings, the hat comprises a crown portion having a double brim 11 connected thereto, the double brim being formed by folding the outer portion 11a of the brim back upon itself and securing the edge 11b thereof adjacent the crown, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The usual sweat band 12 is secured in position within the crown. As herein illustrated the sweat band also covers the inner edge of the brim which is secured to the bottom of the crown. The brim is usually a soft brim and capable of being rolled or shaped as desired and is usually turned up in the back as shown in Fig. 4

shape having a snapped down appearance, yet permits the remainder of the brim to be soft and rolled as heretofore. In accomplishing this, a stiff visor member 13 which is substantially crescent shaped, as shown in Fig. 5, is provided and is shaped so that it curves downwardly from the crown to the edge of the brim as shown in Fig. 3. As the brim is formed, the visor member is positioned between the two layers of the double brim as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 so that the inner edge 13a is disposed adjacent the bottom of the crown with the points 13b of the crescent extending rearwardly to substantially the midpoint of the crown. While adhesive may be used to secure the visor imposition, it has been found that it can be securely maintained in position by the action of the edge portion 11b of the brim which is secured to the crown as shown in Fig. 3 and clamps the visor member between it and the folded edge of the double brim.

It will be seen that the double brim embodying the visor member of the present invention provides a permanent snapped down brim front without altering the appearance of the hat and also reenforces the front of the hat to enable it to be handled thereby more easily than would be the case if the brim were a soft brim.

Variations and modifications maybe made within the scope of the claims and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

I claim:

1. In a felt hat-having a crown and a connected brim extending therearound, said brim having the outer portion folded back and secured to the crown adjacent the base thereof to form a two-ply, soft, flexible brim, the improvement wherein a preformed, stiff, downwardly extending visor member is disposed between and completely enclosed by the plies of the brim at the front of the hat, the front portion of said visor being substantially coextensive with the brim at the front central portion of the brim, with the outer edge of the brim and the secured portion of the brim at the base of the crown tightly engaging the visor for a substantial portion across the front of the brim to provide a predetermined fixed, downwardly extending shape for the brim at the front of the hat.

In afelt hat having a crown and a connected brim extending therearound, said brim having the outer portion folded back and secured to the crown adjacent the base thereof to. form a two-ply, soft, flexible brim, the improvement wherein a preformed, stiff, visor member is disposed between and completely enclosed by the plies of the brim at the front of the hat, the visor member being downwardly curved from the crown to the outer edge of the brim with the front portion of said visor being substantially coextensive with the brim at the front central portion of the brim, with the outer edge of the brim and the secured portion of the brim at the base of the crown tightly engaging the visor for a substantial portion across the front of the brim to provide a permanent, predetermined fixed, snapped down brim appearance at the front of the hat.

In a felt hat having a crown and a connected brim extending therearound, said brim having the outer portion folded back and secured to the crown adjacent the base thereof to form a two-ply, soft, flexible brim, the improvement wherein a preformed, stiff, substantially crescent-shaped visor member is disposed between and completely enclosed by the plies of the brim at the front of the hat, the front portion of said visor being substantially coextensive with the brim at the front central portion of the brim and with the ends extending to substantially the midpoints of the side of the crown, the outer edge portion of the front of the brim and the secured portion of the brim at the base of the crown tightly engaging the visor for a substantial portion across the front of the brim to provide a predetermined fixed, snapped down appearance at the front of the hat.
