Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES Auousrus WRIGHT, or BOSTON, MAssAoHusETrs, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ELLSWORTH o. HATHAWAY, OF SAME PLACE.
LEAR 'FoR ATTACHINGBAILS TO PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,316, dated August 14, 1883. Application filed a 12,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that '1, CHARLES AUGUSTUS WRIGHT, a subject of Great Britain, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State I of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ears for Attaching Bails to Pails and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to means for attaching to pails, coal-hods, and various analogous artiticles the ears to which the ends of the bails are secured. Heretofore the universal custom has been to'secure these cars in place by rivets passed through the ear and the sidetof the vessel, and headed down in the usual manner; or, in .case of metal vessels, the ears have in many instances been secured by solder or by both solder and rivets.
My improvements consist in forming an ear with integral spurs, which constitute a substitute forrivets, these spurs extending laterally from the ear and adapted to enter holes in the sidesof the vessel and headed down, as is the case with rivets, while a lipor horn is formed upon the upper part of the bail,wl 1ich is turned over upon the edge of the mouth of such vessel.
The drawings accompanying this specification represent in Figure 1 a perspective view of a bail-ear embodying my invention, while Fig. 2 is a section of the same applied to a tin or other metal vessel having a wired lip.
In the drawings, A represents my improved ear, the. same consisting of a body portion or plate, A, which maybe in the form of cars now generally in use, while upon one side of this plate A, and at its lower part, I form lateral integral spurs a a, &c., and at theupper part of such plate I form a lateral lip or horn, b. b In applying the above ear to a sheet-metal vessel -for instance, a tin pail, B, with the edge of its mouth wired, as shown in Fig. 2 at cI punch holes inthe sides of such pail for reception of'the spurs a a, 8nd, and I then insert the spurs in such holes and head themdown,
as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. I next head the horn 12 down about the edge of the mouth of the vessel, and the attaching of the ear is complete.
The aboveclescribed method of attaching an. ear by punching holes in the sides of the ves-. 'sel prior to inserting the spurs a a is simply an obvious way of fastening the ear to the pail but in practice I'prefer to lay the ear on the vessel at the place where it is to be attached, and then drive it home, making the spurs a a act to punch their own Iholes.
An ear constructed and applied as above described is simple, very strong, :and expeditiously applied. The horn b constitutes a very important feature, as it retains firm hold of the vessel, and, while protecting the edge of the latter, is a powerful means of retaining the ear in place.
The ear may be of cast metal, or of wrought metal fashioned in a suitable die and drop press. I do not restrict myself in this particular to any especial metal or material.
I claim- I g 1. The herein described ear for securing bails to vessels, consisting of the body portion or plate A, lateral spurs or semi-rivets a a,
and a horn or lip, b, substantially as described. 2. The combination, with a sheet metal or other vessel, of the ear above described, when secured to the vessel by the spurs a a, which pass through the sides of such vessel and are headed down upon its outside, and the horn b, turned down outward about the edge of the mouth of the said vessel, substantiallyas ex plained.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES AUGUSTUS WRIGHT.
