4 Claims. (Cl. 229-36) This invention relates to a new and improved box for cake, pastry'and the like.

One of the most important features and advantages of the instant invention is the provision of a pastry box which may conveniently be carried by integral upwardly projecting handles on the top of the box. 7

Another features of the invention is the provision of a cake box which may very rapidly and conveniently be panels 22, all being substantially rectangular in shape,

assembled after the cake is placed therein, thereby considerably reducing the amount of labor required in packaging.

Still another advantage of'the invention is the saving in the use ofstring, twine, tape or other fastening means used with conventional pastry boxes inasmuch as the present invention requires no external means to secure the box.

Still another feature of the invention is the fact that the two top panel members fold inwardly toward the center from front and back ends, and are secured to the side edges of the box.

Another feature of the invention resides in the construction of the means which fastens the top panels to the sides and which affords a flexibility to the connection therebetween. This feature of the invention reduces the tendency of the box to tear, and further protects the cake carried therein against jarring.

Other objects of the present invention will become apparent upon reading the following specification and referring to the accompanying drawings in which similar characters of reference represent corresponding parts in each of the several views.

The present invention comprises a pastry box formed of a single blank of paperboard or the like, the material of construction being conventional in boxes of this nature. The blank from which the box is constructed is shown particularly in Fig. 6. Such a blank comprises a series of seven central panels divided one from the other by transverse fold lines 11-16. All but the two outermost central panels are provided with end flaps on either end thereof, the end flaps being divided from their contiguous central panels by longitudinal fold lines 17.

A central bottom panel 18 in the center comprises the bottom panel of the completed box. Proceeding outward from either end thereof are identically dimensioned side forming panels 19, half top forming panels 21 and handle having the same width and corresponding panels having the same length. The corners 23 of the outer handle panels 22 are rounded and the panels are provided with apertures or finger holes 24 for convenience in carrying the box after it is assembled.

The four end flaps26 associated with each side-forming central panel are hook-shaped and the two end flaps 27 associated with the bottom central panels are each provided with two angularly shaped slits 28 in which the hooked flaps 26 engage, as is well understood in the paper box art. The two end flaps 27 associated with the central bottom panel are further provided adjacent their center with a pair of transverse slits 29 having oblique cuts at their ends. The flaps 27 are each further provided with a longitudinal slit 31 adjacent longitudinal fold line 17 and spaced offset a slight distance outwardly from a position immediately below one of the transverse slits 29.

The end flaps 32 associated with the half top forming central panel 21 in the direction of the longitudinal slit 31 is formed with a longitudinally outwardly projecting tongue 33 having a width slightly less than the length of transverse slit 29 and in line therewith. The width of the major portion of these flaps 32 is substantially less than the width of the flaps 27. Transversely projecting tongue 34 is formed on the outer margin of each flap 32, having a width substantially equal to the length of longitudinal slit 31 and so positioned as to be spaced from the projection of transverse fold 12 separating panel 19 from panel 21 a distance substantially equal to the displacement of slit 31 from the transverse fold line 13 separating panel 18 from panel 19.

The end flaps 36 associated with the other central half top panel 21 are formed with a transversely outwardly extending tongue 37 in line with slits 29 and having a width less than the length thereof. A cut-out 38 having its major dimension extending transversely is formed in flap 36 adjacent but spaced inwardly from the projection of transverse fold line 16 which divides panel 21 from handle panel 22. The length of cut-out 38 is approximately equal to the length of slits 29.

In assembling the box, a single pair of flaps 27 are folded inwardly to a position at right angles to central bottom panel 18 and hooks 26 are engaged in slits 28. With the box in this position, the cake or other pastry may then be placed on bottom central panel 18. Thereupon the other set of hooks 26 are engaged in slits 28 thereby erecting the sides 19 perpendicular to the bottom 18. Flaps 36 are then brought into position partially overlapping flaps 27 and tongues 37 of flaps 36 are then inserted inside the adjacent slits 29. The box now assumes the position shown in Fig. 3. Completion of the erection of the box is accomplished by placing flaps 32 partially overlapping flaps 24 and inserting tongues 33 through cut-outs 38 and into adjacent slits 29. It will be noted that cut-outs 38 substantially overlie slits 29. Transverse tongues 34 are then inserted in slits 31. The handle panels 22 are now in upstanding position as shown in Fig. 1.

As thus assembled, by reason of the fact that cut-out 38 and slits 29 are slightly larger than the width of tongues 33 and 37, flexing of the cover halves 21 is permitted as the box is carried, thus cushioning the shock of the load during walking, etc. It will further be noted that no string, tape or other extraneous material is employed to secure the box together and that the handles 22 are integral with the other portions of the box. Rapid setup and a minimum of hand labor is required in erection of the box.

purposes of clarity of. understanding, it. s understood that certain changes and modifications may be practiced within the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.

- What is claimed is:

1. A cake box comprising a bottom panel, a pair of side panels attached to either end, of said bottom panel, a pair of half-cover panels attached to. said side panels opposite said bottom panel, handle members integral with said half-cover panels and projecting upward therefrom, first side flaps on either side of said bottom panel, second side flaps on either side of each said side panel, first means for securing said second flaps to said first flaps, third flaps on either side of one of said half-cover panels, fourth flaps on either side of the other side halfrcover panels, said third and fourth flaps each having a horizontal dimension slightly larger than one-half the cor-. responding dimension of said first flaps, and horizontally extending tongues projecting inwardly from the inner vertical edges of said third and fourth flaps, said first flaps being formed with substantially parallel vertical slits adjacent the center thereof, each said slit being in horizontal alignment with and receiving one of said tongues to retain said third and fourth flaps and said half-covers in position and at least one of said third and fourth flaps being disposed immediately adjacent a first flap and having a tongue positioned within one of the vertical slits formed in said first flap and formed with a slit in registry with the other vertical slit formed in said first. fla the ton ue at the other at said. third and fourth flaps being positioned within the two registered slits.

2. A box according to claim 1 in which said slits are longer than the vertical dimension of said tongues received therein to permit flexibility of said half-covers relative to said first flaps,

A box according to claim 3 in which said first fiap is formed with a longitudinal slit adjacent its base and said fourth flap is provided with a transversely extending third tongue projecting through said longitudinal slit, said third tongue serving to hold said third and fourth flaps in close proximity to said first flap.
