3 Claims. (Cl. 200-6) This invention relates to a circuit controlling device and more particularly to improvements and refinements in the controller disclosed in the patent to Thaddeus W. Buslawski, Patent No. 2,419,819, patented April 29, 1947, for Circuit Controlling Device.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of an improved controller for enabling the operator of a hoist carriage to directly control the motor of the hoist carriage in a convenient manner.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel casing construction for the controller which eliminates the necessity for screwing the insulative cylindrical tube of the casing to the upper and lower members, which heretofore resulted in cracking of the cylindrical tube which served as the sole means connecting the upper and lower members.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of novel moisture-proofing means employed in the invention. V
An additional object of the invention lies in the pro vision of a novel combination lower member and handle which provides means for seating the actuating finger piece while strengthening and rigid-ifying the entire construction.
Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of improved means for centering the rock shaft of the device by employing a novel centering spring arrangement.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of an improved construction for the resiliently mounted contacts, and in the various improvements in the assembly of the controller which render it less expensive to construct and more fool-proof in operation.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this circuit controlling device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the circuit controller comprising the present invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the circuit controller, with a portion of the cylindrical tube thereof being broken away and shown in section for illustrating the construction of various other elements incorporated in the invention;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the invention;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 4-4 in Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view as taken along the plane of line 5-5 in Figure 2, illustrating in particular the construction of the resiliently mounted contacts;
Figure 6 is a horizontal sectional view as taken along the plane of line 6-6 in Figure 2, illustrating in particular the construction of the centering means.
With continuing reference to the accompanying draw- 2,828,370 Patented Mar. 25, 1958 ings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral 10 generally designates the circuit controller comprising the present invention. This circuit controller includes a casing generally indicated at 12 which consists of three main members, an upper flange member 14, a cylindrical tube 16 and a lower handle member 18.
The upper flange member 14, as can be best seen in Figures 2 and 4, is provided with an internally threaded opening 20 through which the lower end of a cable or the like, indicated at 22, may be threadedly attached. An eye 24 is provided for facilitating the suspension of the controller 10. The upper member 14 is provided with a peripheral flange, as at 26, against which the upper end of the cylindrical tube 16 seats.
The lower end of the cylindrical tube 16 which is con structed of a suitable insulating material is adapted to abut against a flange plate 28 secured to the undersurface of the disc portion 30 of the lower handle member 18 by means of a screw fastener 32 and by means of the two tie- rods 34 and 36 which are secured to the upper member 14 and held in place by means of nuts or other suitable fastening elements 38 and 40 which bear against the flange plate 28. The tie-rods therefore hold the upper and lower members together, with the tube 16 in position clampingly between the flange 26 and the flange plate 23. It is noted that the flange plate 28 extends more than half the way about the perimeter of the disc portion 31 of the handle member 18, stopping short of the yoke portion 42 of the handle member it: which is integrally formed with the disc portion 30.
Secured to a mounting block 46 integrally formed with the disc portion 39 of the lower mounting member 18 is an insulative support 48 carrying a bearing block 50. Iournaled in the bearing block 50 and in. the disc portion 30 and extending through the disc portion 30 is a rock shaft 52. The rock shaft '52 has pinned thereto by means of a pin 54 or the like a finger actuating member 56. There is provided moisture insulation means including a moisture insulation bearing 58 and a spring 66 which yieldingly engages the moisture insulating bearing sleeve 58 and the actuating finger piece 56. The block 50 is aflixed to the support 48 by means of a pin 62 or other suitable fastener.
Pinned to the rock shaft 52, as at 64 and 66, are insulative blocks 68 and '70 carrying bridging contacts 72 and 74. Also pinned, as at 76, to the rock shaft 52 and thus rotatable therewith is an insulative member 7 8 carrying a lug 80.
Retaining pins or stops, as at 82;, are secured to the disc portion 39 and it is noted that the retaining pin 82 as shown in Figure 6 is engaged by both ends 84 and S6 of a spring 88 positioned about the rock shaft 52 and held in place by sleeves 90 and 92. The other of the pins 82 may be omitted but does serve to retain the spring in position when the device is being assembied.
Secured to the supporting plate 48 by means of bolt fasteners, as at 91 and 93 are angle- shaped anchoring brackets 94 and 96. The bolt fasteners 91 and @3 form terminals to which conductors carried by cable 22 are adapted to be attached.
Each of the pairs of anchoring brackets 94 and 96 are provided with apertures 98 and 100 therethrough. Channel-shaped guides MP2 and 1493 are provided which chan- I nel-shaped guides have holes therethrough in alignment with the apertures 98 and 100. Contact elements 104 and 106 which have perforations 108 and 110 therethrough are provided. Double headed pins 112 and 114 extend through the aligned apertures, holes and perforations in the brackets, channel guides and contact elements respectively, with the heads 116 and 118 of the pins 112 and 114 bearing against the channel guides 102 and 103 where the bridging contacts 72 and 74- bridge the pairs of Contact elements 194 to complete operative electrical circuits for driving an electric motor in one direction or for otherwise completing electrical circuits. Upon reverse movement of the actuating finger piece 56, the
bridging elements 72 and 74 will engage the contact elements 1% to complete operative electrical circuits therethrough. V
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A controller for electric circuits comprising a casing including an upper flanged member and a lower handle member having a flange plate appended thereto, a cylindrical tube disposed between said upper member and said lower member, tie-rods extending between said upper member and said lower member holding said tube between the flange of said upper member and said flange plate, a switch mechanism within said casing including a plurality of resiliently mounted contacts, a rock shaft journaled in said lower member and having its ends projecting through said lower member, and bridging contacts on said rock shaft engageable with said resiliently mounted contacts, said lower member including an integrally formed yoke, an actuating finger piece secured to said rock shaft and extending into said yoke, and a moisture insulation means disposed between said lower member and said finger piece and including a bearing sleeve on said rock shaft having a spring appended thereto, said spring engaging said finger piece to urge said sleeve against said lower member, a stop on said lower member, a centering spring secured to said rock shaft engaging said stop, a lug carried by said rock shaft, said centering spring engaging said lug to urge said rock shaft to normally position said rock shaft with said bridging contacts out of engagement with said resiliently mounted contacts.
2. A controller for electric circuits comprising a casing including an upper flanged member and a lower handle member having a flange plate appended thereto, a cylin drical tube disposed between said upper member and said lower member, tie-rods extending between said upper member and said lower member holding said tube between the flange of said upper member and said flange plate, a switch mechanism within said casing including a plurality of resiliently mounted contacts, a rock shaft iournaled in said lower member and having its ends projecting through said lower member, and bridging contacts on said rock shaft engageable with said resiliently mounted contacts, said lower member including an integrally formed yoke, an actuating finger piece secured to said rock shaft and extending into said yoke, and a moisture insulation means disposed between said lower member and said finger piece and including a bearing sleeve on said rock shaft having a spring appended there to, said spring engaging said finger piece to urge said sleeve against said lower member, each of said resiliently mounted contacts including anchoring brackets having apertures therethrough, channel-shaped guides having holes therethrough, contact elements having perforations therethrough, double headed pins extending through said apertures in said brackets, said holes in said guides and said perforations in said contact elements with one head of each of said pins engaging said guides, and springs about said pins engaging the other heads of said pins and said contact elements.
3. A controller for electric circuits comprising a casing including an upper flanged member and a lower handle member having a flange plate appended thereto, a cylindrical tube disposed between said upper member and said lower member, tie-rods extending between said upper member and said lower member holding said tube between the flange of said upper member and said flange plate, a switch mechanism within said casing including a plurality of resiliently mounted contacts, a rock shaft journaled in said lower member and having its ends projecting through said lower member, and bridging con tacts on said rock shaft engageable with said resiliently mounted contacts, said lower member including an integrally formed yoke, an actuating finger piece secured to said rock shaft and extending into said yoke, and a moisture insulation means disposed between said lower member and said finger piece and including a bearing sleeve on said rock shaft having a spring appended there to, said spring engaging said finger piece to urge said sleeve against said lower member, a stop on said lower member, a centering spring secured to said rock shaft engaging said stop, a lug carried by said rock shaft, said centering spring engaging said lug to urge said rock shaft to normally position said rock shaft with said bridging contacts out of engagement with said resiliently mounted contacts, each of said resiliently mounted contacts including anchoring brackets having apertures therethrough, channel-shaped guides having holes therethrough, contact elements having perforations therethrough, double headed pins extending through said apertures in said brackets, said holes in said guides and said perforations in said contact elements with one head of each of said pins engaging said guides, and springs about said pins engaging the other heads of said pins and said contact elements.
