Description

March ,1958 c. H. STUMPF 2,825,906
INFANT'S GARMENT Filed March 7, 1955 INVENTOR. CAEOL YN H. STUMPF The present invention relates to infants garments, and more particularly to a panty combined with a skirt for baby girls.
The object of the invention is to provide, in a single garment, a panty which may or may not be waterproof, which may be worn over a diaper, and one which has a portion resembling a skirt to give an appearance of daintiness and femininity without the bother and inconvenience of an additional outer garment.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an infants single garment which may be used as a combined panty and slip, or a combined panty and outer garment.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a combined skirt and panty which unfolds when not worn, into a single substantially flat piece, and is therefore easy to launder, easy to put on a child, and is otherwise easily cared for.
Other objects and advantages reside in the construction of parts, the combination thereof and the mode of operation, as will become more apparent from the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the garment as it is worn, showing especially how the garment is fastened.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the garment when unfolded.
Figure 3 is a plan view with the front skirt portion laid flat to show its attachment to the panty.
Figure 4 is a detail view taken in the direction indicated by the arrows in Figure 3.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
A panty portion is represented by the numeral 10. The pattern of this portion is a flat piece which may be made of a double layer, one a lining of waterproof material, and the other, fabric such as cotton, orlon, nylon, rayon, or any other suitable or desirable material, and may be ornamental and decorative as desired.
As shown in the drawing, the portion 10 is composed of a substantially rectangular back section 12, a front section 14, and an intermediate section 16 reduced in width and decorated, if desired, with lace or embroidery as shown at 18. This intermediate section is curved inwardly and encircles the childs legs. The waterproof lining is indicated at 15.
Secured to the back section 12 is a substantially rectangular back skirt section 20. The top edges of the portions 12 and 20 are formed into a casing 22 inclosing an elastic inserted therein.
The lower halves 24 of a series of snap fasteners are placed along the side edges of the skirt portion 20, and both layers of the panty section 12, and secures them together.
A substantially rectangular front skirt section 26 is secured along its top edge to the edge of the front section 14 of the panty, as shown at 28. This fastening may be any form of seam desired. The skirt section which has a width exceeding the width of the front panty section may be gathered, or both may be gathered, and elastic used States Patent Patented Mar. 11, 1958 ice here in the same manner as described above. In the form of the invention shown, applicant uses a straight seam, gathers the skirt section slightly as at 29 so as to be coextensive with the width of the front panty section and leaves the panty section ungathered. The seam is shown at 28 on the drawing.
Along the edges of the front section 14 of the panty, the top halves 30 of snap fasteners are distributed. These fasteners are secured to and through the fabric and the waterproof material 15. The topmost fastener, and only the topmost one, is secured through the front skirt section 26. It will thus be seen that the back skirt section is secured at its edges and the edges of the front skirt section are left free.
In use, the garment is drawn between the childs legs, over a diaper if one is worn, and snapped about the waist. A garment is thus contrived, which can be Worn over a diaper and will give an appearance of daintiness and femininity and without the inconvenience of a skirt being drawn over the childs head.
Although the preferred embodiment of the device has been described, it will be understood that within the purview of this invention various changes may be made in the form, details, proportion and arrangement of parts, the combination thereof and mode of operation, which generally stated consist in a device capable of carrying out the objects set forth, as disclosed and defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a childs garment comprising a waterproof panty member having substantially rectangular front and back panty portions joined by a crotch member, said front and back panty portions each having a substantially straight margin at the top and substantially straight margins at the opposite sides, said back panty portion having an elastic band extending across the top thereof providing a waist band for said panty, fastening means extending along the sides of the back panty portion, complementary fastening means extending along the sides of the front panty portion, said fastening means cooperating to join the front and back panty portions in contiguous relation along the sides thereof, and a skirt including separate substantially rectangular front and back sections secured across the top thereof to the tops of the front and back panty portions respectively, the improvement wherein said back skirt section has a side to side width substantially equal to that of the back panty portion, the sides of said back skirt section being fastened to the sides of the back panty portion throughout the length substantially of the sides of the back panty portion such that the back skirt section is anchored at the sides as well as at the top to the back panty portion, and wherein said front skirt section has a side to side width exceeding that of the front panty portion, said front skirt section being gathered at the top thereof so as to be coextensive with the top of said front panty portion, the side portions of said front skirt portion diverging so as to flare outwardly from the sides of said front panty portion, said diverging side portions, upon said front and back panty portions being fastened together at the sides, overlapping the sides of said back skirt section.
