UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

ANVI L.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 281,847, dated July 24, 1883.
' Application iledMarch 31,1883. (No model.)
To 1r/ZZ` whom/ it may conc/ern,.-
Be it known that I, OTIs DIMOOK, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at New London,
in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anvils, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to anvils; and its obj ect is to provide a smiths anvil, especially-y adapted to straightening shafting and the like; and the novelty consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention. A
Figure 'l is a perspective elevation of my improved anvil, and Fig. 2 a similar view with anvil-block elevated.
A is the base, and may be of any suitablev size and shape. The sides of this base are provided with ears or guides B B, andbetween said guides is a straight semicircular groove, C, in which is placed a shaft, E. In the face of the base, on either side of the groove C, are
two vertical holes, d d, which form seats forV the springs D D, and are of a sufficient depth to admit of the springs being compressed into them, or flush with the face of the base A.
G is the anvil-block proper, and its under side is provided with a groove, F, corresponding to the groove C in the face of the base, so that the block may be placed on the base between the guides B B, the groove F fitting over the shaft E; and it is retained in this position by the shaft and guides, while the springs D D balance it on either side of the shaft, and at the same time allow itto tilt to either side if pressure should be applied to the block on either side of the center of the shaft E. The face of the'block is provided with 'a recess, H, and when a shaft is laid across the block at a right angle to the recess H and struck with a sledge or hammer, the recess II allows the shaft to give at that point, while the balanced position of the block on the base admits of its adjustability to conform to the position of the in combination with the block G, having groove" F, substantially asset forth. v
2. The base A, having groove C, shaft E, and springs D D, in combination with the. anvil-block G, having groove F, substantially as set forth.
3. 'Ihe base A, having groove C, shaft E, springs D D, and guides B B, in combination with the anvil-block G, having groove F and recess I-I, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- O'IIS DIMOGK.
