Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HOGHSTRASSER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOLDING FOR HANGING PICTURES.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 28,174, dated May 8i, 1860.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HENRY HooHs'rRAs- SER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Moldings for Hanging of Pictures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which# Figure l represents an elevation or front view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional or end View of same, in connection with the cornice Gr of the wall, with the hook S attached, from which pictures 1t n are suspended. F ig. 3 is hook detached.
This improved molding is designed to be secured to the walls of rooms, hall, by means of wood screws and placed immediately under the cornice G of ceiling of room, leaving from the top a space of about one quarter of an inch for the reception of the hook S. This molding is intended to be arranged or placed entirely around the room, being mitered at the corners, so that it will present to the view and appear as a continuation of the figure or design of the cornice, and also to appear to form its base, presenting a neat and continuous finish around the room from which pictures and mirrors or any decorations can be suspended at any place on the walls o 0 or changed from place to place as may be desired without in any way disiguring or injuring the walls.
To enable others skilled in the art to I make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and purposes.
desired form with a rabbet or lip on its upper edge, as shown in Figs. 1 and .9J-A to receive the hook S. The inside of the rabbet, Fig. Q-E extends about one quarter of an inch from the wall, so as to prevent that part of the hook, Fig. 2, letter C, which lits on the tongue or lip of the rabbet from touching the wall. This part of the hook is but one eighth of an inch thick, which leaves one eighth of an inch clear space behind it, to the wall, see Fig. 2, letter D. The breast or front of the rabbet, letter E, is about one half of an inchwide. The hook S presses on this, and keeps the lower part F of the hook from touching the lower part of the molding. The hook is made shorter than the width of the molding, so that it will not touch any of the lower part of the said molding.
This molding is intended expressly for houses that are finished, and attached and secured by the means of wooden screws.
I am aware of there being brass and iron moldings with a groove made in to receive the hooks built in the walls of houses during erection. I do not claim this device neither do I claim a molding drawn from sheet metal -with a slot in the middle but What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A molding with a projecting lip or rabbet A, or its equivalent, substantially as, and for the purposes as herein described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this the sixth day of April A. D. 1860.
