United States Patent SINK RIM Horace Henley, Jr., Lubbock, Tex.
Application October 12, 1954, Serial No. 461,719
3 Claims. (Cl. 4--187) This invention relates in general to new and useful improvements in plumbing equipment, and more particularly to an improved sink construction.
At the present time, many kitchen sink constructions are of the type wherein a sink is mounted in an opening in a counter. Inasmuch as the counter is subject to water, it is necessary that there be provided an adequate seal between the sink and the counter in which it is positioned and which supports the sink. While there have been devised many types of connections for use in this particular arrangement, all such connections have been relatively complicated and many have proved to be not feasible.
It is therefore the primary object of this invention to provide an improved sink construction which includes a novel rim arrangement whereby a sink may be readily secured to a counter in which it is seated.
Another project of this invention is to provide an improved rim arrangement for a sink, the rim arrangement including a rebent flange underlying the main portion of the rim, the flange being adapted to rest upon the counter and being clamped thereto in sealed relation with respect thereto.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel connection between a sink and a counter, the sink including a rebent flange disposed beneath a rim thereof in hidden relation, and clamp means carried by the rebent flange in spaced relation, the clamp means being engageable with a counter for clamping the flange thereto.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a sink construction including a counter having a sink mounted therein;
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 2-2 of Figure 1 and shows the specific relationship between the sink and the counter and the manner in which the sink is clamped to the counter; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective View with portions shown in section illustrating the particular arrangement of the various portions of the rim of the sink and the relationship of a rebent flange thereof with respect to the counter.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that there is illustrated a sink assembly which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 10. The sink assembly includes a counter construction, which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 12, which may form a portion of a cabinet. Seated in the counter construction 12 is a sink construction which is the subject of this invention, the sink construction being "ice referred to in general by the reference numeral 14. As is best illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the counter construction 12 includes a counter board 16 and a covering 18. The counter board 16 and the covering 18 are provided with aligned openings 20 and 22, respectively, in which the sink construction 14 may be positioned.
As is best illustrated in Figure 2, the sink construction 14 includes a receptacle portion which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 24. The receptacle portion 24 includes a bottom wall 26 and an upstanding peripheral wall 28. The bottom wall 26 is provided with a fitting 30 for attachment to a drain pipe 32. The peripheral upper edge of the peripheral wall 28 terminates in an outwardly directed peripheral rim which is referred to in general by reference numeral 34.
As is best illustrated in Figure 3, the rim 34 includes an upwardly and outwardly directed curved portion 36 formed integral with the upper peripheral edge of the peripheral wall 28. Formed integral with the outer edge of the portion 36 is an upwardly and outwardly sloping portion 38. The portion 38 has formed integral with the outer edge thereof an outwardly directed flange 40. Connected to the outer part of the flange 40 by a depending vertical portion 42 is a rebent flange 44. The rebent flange 44 underlies the flange 40 and is disposed in generally parallel relation with respect thereto.
As is best illustrated in Figure 2, the rebent flange 44 rests upon the counter construction 12 and is clamped thereto by a plurality of clamp members 46. Each of the clamp members 46 is in the form of a C-clamp having an adjusting clamping screw 48 engaging the bottom of the counter board 16. The C-clamp 46 also includes a fixed jaw 50 for engaging the upper side of the rebent flange 44. The fixed jaw 50 is of a size to fit between the rebent flange 44 and the outwardly directed flange 40. It is to be noted that the inner peripheral edge of the rebent flange 44 is in alignment with the openings 20 and 22.
When it is desired to install the sink construction 15, it is merely necessary to lower it into position with the rebent flange 44 seated on the covering 18. Then the clamps 46 are positioned as necessary and clamped in place.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A sink assembly comprising a counter and a sink, said counter having an opening therein, said sink including a depending central receptacle having an outturned rim at the upper periphery thereof, a rebent flange formed integrally with said outturned rim along the outer periphery thereof in vertically spaced underlying relation, said receptacle being passed through said opening and said rebent flange resting on said counter adjacent said opening, and clamp means engaging said rebent flange and an underside of said counter to releasably clamp said rebent flange against said counter in sealed relation.
2. A sink assembly comprising a counter and a sink, said counter having an opening therein, said sink including a depending central receptacle having an outturned rim at the upper periphery thereof, a rebent flange formed integrally with said outturned rim along the outer periphery thereof in vertically spaced underlying relation, said receptacle being passed through said open 3 ing and said rebent flange resting on said counter adjacent said opening, and clamp means engaging said rebent flange and an underside of said counter to releasably clamp said rebent flange against said counter in sealed relation, said clamp means being in the form of a plurality of spaced C-clamps, each of said C-clamps having a fixed jaw disposed between said rim and said rebent flange.
3. A sink assembly comprising a cabinet counter and a sink construction, said sink construction including a 10 central receptacle section having an outturned rim at an upper periphery thereof, a rebent flange formed integral with said outturned rim and underlying said outturned 4 rim, said counter having a planar upper surface, said rebent flange being seated on said counter upper surface, and clamp means engaging said rebent flange and said counter and clamping said sink construction to said 5 counter.
