UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VAIJIER M. BLAOKMER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR ONE-HALF TO OSCAR F. COMSTOOK, OF SAME PLACE.
FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,336, dated July 17, 1883.
Application filed January Q2, 188:5.
`To a/Z, whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER M. BLACKMER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and luseful Improvements in Filters; and Ihereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the v accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of water-filters; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of a screening-cylinder within a suitable basin, and provided with suitable pipes, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, which shows my invention in vertical section, A represents a suitable water-tight shell or basin, the top of which isclosed by the cover B, which is secured to place by suitable bolts, and is preferably formed with sloping bottom H', which is provided .with outlet-pipe H at its lowest point. In the upper part of this shell is located the cylindrical screen O, which is mount- Y ed upon the ilangedeollars J J, that are attached (No model.)
are opened, while the remaining valves are closed. Water enters through the pipeFinto the shell, lls the same, and from thence it passes into and through the cylindrical screen, and nds exit through the pipe D, which distributesthe water to the points where it is to be used, the screenpreventing the passage of any foreign matter into the pipe D. When the screenbecomes fouled by the accumulation of matter upon its exterior, the valves in the pipes F and D are closed and the valves in the 4pipes E and H are opened. .Water now passes directly into the cylinder, thoroughly cleaning the same and carrying the sediment and foreign matter out through the discharge H in the bottom ofthe shell.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In aiilter, the combination, with the shell A, provided with removable coverrB, of the cylindrical screen C, and flanged co lars J J, and the pipes D, E, F, and H, provided with suitable stop-valves, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as set forth.
2. In a filter, the shell A, formed with perpendicular sides, and the sloping bottom H', provided with outlet-pipe II, located at the lowest part thereof, and with a removable cover, B, in combination with a ltering-cylinder removably supported by the iianged collars J J, and suitable pipes connected with the said cylinder, the source of supply, and
the interior of the shell, substantially as set forth.
