LANTERN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,153, dated July 10, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK E. Snorrrnns, of Gloucester, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in lanterns; and it consists in a globeholder of peculiar construction that is formed of wire, and ispivoted to the lantern at one side of the burner, whereby the burner may be turned to one side of the lantern when it is desired to light it, without having to be removed therefrom, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly in section, 011 the line a: m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elvat-ion of the lantern complete.

A. represents a lantern of the tubular variriety, above one side of which extend the lugs or bearings B, which are here shown as formed of wire, but which may be of any desired construction, and in which is pivoted the baseplate 0, that supports the globe D, by means of the wire I], the wire being secured to the baseplate by means of the turneddown ends F of the wire G, which is inclosed in the turned-over edge of the base-plate, as shown. Projecting from opposite sides of this baseplate are the wires 1, which are bent in conformity to the shape of the globe, and which extend up to within a suitable distance of the top thereof, where they are bent at right angles into semicircles, forming, when united by means of the loops Z, a circular guard, K, surrounding the upper end of the globe at a suitable distance therefrom, as shown at Fig. 2. livoted to 5 one side'of the guard, at the point L, is aring, M, wlnch is formed of wire bent in the form accidentally falling out,

shown, and which has the depending catch 0, which is adapted to come down to the outer side of the circular guard, and thus firmly secure the upper portion of the globe in position. Secured to the wires I, on the opposite side from where the ring is pivoted, is aspring-catch, I, which engages with the projecting eye Q of the ring that secures it in position. At a suitable point upon the ring is formed a bearing-shoulder, It, behind which a depending pin, S, catches when the globe is raised to a vertical position, and thus secures it, the pin being secured in a depending sleeve, V, with which the crown-plate WV is provided, and provided with a spring, T, which keeps it normally in the position shown in Fig. 1.

By means of the construction here shown and described, the lantern-globe is secured firmly in position against the possibility of its and by means of the pivotal connection between it and the lantern it is enabled to be swung to one side when lighting the lantern, and thus obviates the necessity of removing it, as is now done in lanterns constructed in the ordinary way. The pivoted upper ring admits of the globe being detached from the holder when desired.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a lantern, the combination of the bearings B, which are secured up on the top of the lamp, the base-plate (l, loosely attached thereto and adapted to be turned back with the globe, the wires I, having their upper ends formed into a circular guard which is provided with a spring-catch, the ring M, provided with a catch, the shoulder It, and the spring-catch for engaging therewith, substantially as shown and described.
