ELASTICIZED ANTI-DRAFT HEADCOVERING Filed April 3, 195a 'INVENTOR ATTORNEY United States Patent 01 ELASTICIZED ANTI-DRAFT HEADCOVERING' Stephen 1; Kennedy, Heights, Mass, assignur to the? Unitedv States of. America. as: represented bythe: Secretary of the Army Application'Aprilli, 1956, ScrialNo. 575,919
10' Claims. ((31%. 21-495) (Granted. under. Title 35, U. 8'. Code (1952), see. 266) The invention described herein, if patented, may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to meof any royalty thereon.
The invention relates to head coverings and more pan ticularly to head coverings of the type which include one or more elastic inserts in the side wall area so as'to allow one side of the head covering to fit heads of several different sizes.
*Such head coverings are objectionable when used in cold weather because the elasticized knit fabric which forms the most satisfactory elastic insert particularly when stretched is highly pervious to air and permits the entry of drafts to the headwhereby the wearer is more susceptible to head coids and like ail'mcntsa The desirabilityof" providing means for barring the entry of drafts intosuch a head covering is obvious;
With the toregoing in view, it is an object of the invention to provide an improved elasticized-cap which includes a novel means restricting the passage of air or drafts therethrough.
A further object is to provide an improved cap of this type wherein at least one-section of the cap is of two ply construction with free lower edges, each: ply including substantially impervious and pervious portions, one of said portions being elastic, and the impervious portions of the plies being entirely ofl'set to provide a means restricting the passage of air or drafts therethrough.
Other objects and advantages reside iirthe particular structure and designoftheinvention, the construction and design of the several elements, combinations and subcombinations oi such elements, all-.of which will he readily apparent to those skilled in. the art upon reference to the attached drawing in connection with the following specification whereinthe invention is shown, described and claimed.
In the. drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view taken; from above of a head covering including the invention;
Figure 2 is aview like Figured but taken frombel'ow;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the head covering;
Figure 5 is an enlarged, fragmentary, vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 55 of Figure l; and
Figure 6 is a view like Figure 5 but taken on the plane of the line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts in all views, 10 designates any suitable head covering. In the embodiment illustrated, the head covering 10 comprises a cap and includes a visor 13 and a crown formed of a top piece 11 and side wall 12. The top piece 11 and visor 13 may be of any suitable construction but the side wall 12 is preferably formed of two plies of substantially air impervious inelastic material. In at least one section of the side wall 12 the inner ply 14 and the outer ply 15 ice are connected together onlyalong their upper edges by the top seam-.16 so as to have free lower edges 17 and 18- defining a'n inverted, open pocket 19. In the embodiment illustrated thecap 10 has two side sections so formed, one on each side of the visor 13. Preferably and as: best seenin Figure 5, the lower portion of each inner ply 14 of each pocket 19 is itself formed of two plies 2'9 and 30 which are seamed together along their lower edges as at 21'. The narrow ply 30 is between the plies 15 and 20; Its upper edge: is seamed tothe inner ply 21F at531'. Elsewhere in the side Wall- 12- on' both sides of the pockets 19, the inner ply- 14 Figure 6, is preferably of single ply construction and connected to the outer ply 15 by the bottom edge seam 22 as well as the top seam 16 To elasticize the side wall 12, each outer ply- 15 of each pocket 19 includes an air perviousportion 230i any suitable elastic material such as elasticized knit material. In like manner, each inner ply 14 of each pocket 19 includes, an air pervious portion 24 of like material. The pervious portions 23 and 24 preferably extend the entire height of the side wall 12. Also, such portions 23 and 24- are entirely ofiset to prevent passage of air through the side wall 12. Preferably, the pervious portions 23 and 24 areoffset substantial distances, at least as great as the width of each pervious portion. Themost efiicient arrangement'is the one illustrated wherein the pervious portions 23 and 24 are offset asfar as possible so that the outer portions 23 are at one end of the pockets 19 and the inner portions 24 are at the other ends of such pockets:
It follows from the foregoing that a single size of head covering according to the invention will readily adapt itself to heads of several sizes. At the same time, this uniquemean-s of the invention prevents the entry of cold air throughthe side wall 12 despite'the pervious elasticizin'gportions 23 and 24. In this connection, it should be noted that the pressure of the wearers head against the side wall 12eifectively forces plies 14 and 15 together and'closes each pocket 19 against the passage ofair from an outer pervious portion 23 longitudinally of a pocket to the related inner pervious portion 24-. Thus, for all air passage purposes the pockets 19 do not exist. They arenecessary topermit lateral sliding of the inner and outer plies relative toeach other as the side wall 12 expands or' contracts to fit heads of different sizes. At the same time, animpervious wall of double; thickness has been provided in the sweat band area throughout substantially the entire side wall 12. Moreover, while the cap shown is provided with two anti-draft sections at specific locations, it is obvious that fewer or more of such sectionscould be provided at difi'erent places.
Consequently, while there has been shown and described what is now considered to be a preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that the same is susceptible of other forms and expressions. Thus, the invention is not limited to the precise structure and design shown and described hereinabove except as hereinafter claimed.
