4 Claims. (Cl. 15-131) This invention relates to a glue applicator device for applying glue to a floor for installing a floor covering.
It is a primary object of this invention to provide a floor glue applying device for applying glue in a liquid form to a floor for securing a floor covering on the floor and spreading the glue on the floor evenly before the covering is applied.
It is an object of this invention to provide a floor covering glue applicator of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter having an enlarged hopper for a large quantity of glue with a valve for controlling the flow of glue from the hopper onto the floor and a notched resilient glue spreading member or brush carried by the device for spreading the glue on the floor evenly before the floor covering is applied.
It is another object of this invention to provide a glue applicator for applying a floor covering glue on a floor having a hopper for the glue and a passage with a valve means in the passage for controlling the movement of glue from the hopper. The valve means is spring pressed to a passage closing position whereby the opening of the valve on the hopper is determined and controlled by the operator of the device.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a glue applicator of this kind having a glue hopper with a scraper in the hopper for scraping the glue from the interior surface of the hopper, a spring pressed valve on the hopper for controlling the flow of glue onto the floor from the hopper and a notched resilient glue spreading member or brush on the applicator for smoothly and evenly applying the glue on the floor. The scraper and valve are actuated and controlled by an operator of the device while moving the'device over the floor to be covered.
Other and further objects and advantages of this invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings a rubber applicator is provided for spreading liquid rubber or a similar cement for securing linoleum, asphalt tile, rubber tile, plastic tile and the like to a floor when the floor is to be covered. The applicator, formed according to an embodiment of this invention is designated generally by the numeral of the drawings and is generally quarter-round in configuration being elongated for containing a considerable amount of liquid glue therein. A chamber 12, below the hopper 11 is engageable with the floor and the glue within the hopper is transferred to the chamber from the hopper and then to the floor on which the glue is to be applied.
The hopper 11, being quarter round in cross sectional configuration is provided with an acurate wall spaced forwardly from the flat rear wall 13 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The liquid glue is contained within the hopper 11 between the rear Wall 13 and the forward arcuate wall 14 and end walls 15 secure the arcuate wall 14 in spaced relation to the rear wall 13 to complete the front and side walls together with the end walls of the hopper. The lower edge of the arcuate wall 14 on the forward side of the hopper 11 is terminated in spaced relation to the flat rear wall 13 in order to provide a space or opening between the arcuate wall and the fiat rear wall through which the liquid glue may be passed While applying the glue to a floor.
The end walls 15 are provided with a downwardly in clined edge 17 below the hopper 11 on the forward side thereof to provide the upper edge of the chamber 12. A bottom 18 is fixed to or formed integral with the lower edges of the rear and end Walls to complete the structure of the chamber and a cover 19 is secured to the downwardly inclined edges 17 being secured to the lower edge of the bottom of the arcuate Wall 14 in spaced relation to the rear wall 13 and a brace 20 is secured adjacent to the rear end of the cover 19 and the lower surface of the arcuate wall 14 for supporting the upper wall of the chamber 12 below the hopper 11. The elongated fiat brace 20 is secured to the hopper 12 and the cover 19 by suit-I will provide a passage 22 between the hopper and thechamber throughwhich liquid glue is adapted topass.
A scraper 23, elongated in configuration and rectangular in form is pivotally supported on the upper edge of the hopper 11 and rear wall 13 for vertical movement about a horizontal axis and the hinges 24 are secured to the upper edge of the scraper 23 and the inner edge of the rear wall 13.
Each of the hinges 24 includes a pair of spaced apart hinge sleeves 25 secured to the upper edge of the flat rear wall 13 and extending forwardly therefrom for receiving a hinge pin 26 for hingedly mounting the scraper 23 on the rear Wall 13. The scraper 23 also has hinge sleeves or tubes formed thereon through which the hinge pin 26 is adapted to pass for hingedly mounting the scraper 23 on the rear wall 13. The edge of the scraper 23 opposite from the hinges 24 is adapted to engage the inner surface of the arcuate wall 14 for scraping glue downwardly in the hopper 11 and a handle 27 is pivotally mounted on the scraper 23, adjacent the upper edge thereof and spaced from the hinges 24 for operation by an operator of the applicator 10. The handle 27 is pivotally mounted on the scraper 23 for movement about an axis perpendicular to the scraper 23 by the hinge pin 28, as clearly shown in Fig. 3-ofthe-drawings.
For closing the opening 22 a valve mounted on the rear wall 13 on the hinge pins 31 for movement about a horizontal axis on the applicator. Hinge barrels 32 are formed on the rear edge of the valve plate 30 and barrels are secured on the rear wall 13 F in horizontal alignment with the hinge barrels 32 for receiving therein the hinge pins 31 pivotally mounting the valve plate 30. Each spring 35 engages the valve plate 30 and the flat rear wall 13 for urging the hinge plate to a closed position or in one direction about the hinge pins 31. The valve plate 30 is provided with an outwardly extending tab 36 on the outer side thereof through which a cord 37 may be attached for moving the valve plate against the plate at is hingedly open position of the passage 22 and the cord will provide for the amount of movement of the valve plate 30 by the operator.
An opening 38 is provided between the bottom 18 and the cover 19 at the forward edge of the cover through which the glue may pass from the chamber 12 outwardly onto the floor when the glue is applied to the floor.
A notched glue spreading member or brush 39 is secured on the cover 19 adjacent the forward end thereof and will overlie the opening 38 for brushing the glue on the surface of the floor as the glue is moved from the chamber onto the floor.
The brush 39 is preferably made of rubber or other flexible material and is provided with a toothed edge at the engagement of the brush with the door so that the glue is free to pass between the teeth of the toothed edge 40 and will be obstructed by the teeth. The brush 39 is secured to the applicator by bolts 41 and nuts 42 engaging on the bolts and the rear edge of the back of the brush 39 is supported in its position overlying the opening 38 by a brace 43 which extends along the length of the chamber 12 and the lower edge of the brace 43 may be secured to the cover 19 by rivets, bolts or other suitable fastening means.
For moving the applicator 10 on the surface of the floor glue will be placed in the hopper 11 for movement into the chamber 12 and outwardly through the opening 38 to be smoothly and evenly engaged by the brush 39. Arms 44 extend rearwardly from the flat rear wall 13 and applicator 10 and will pivotally mount the upwardly extending handle 45 to be engaged by the operator or person desiring to move the applicator 10. The handle 45 is pivotally mounted to the arms 44 by a horizontally extending pivot pin 46 whereby the handle 45 is movable vertically in an arcuate direction about a horizontal axis.
In the use and operation of the applicator 10 the valve plate 30 is initially free to be moved to a closing position in the passage 22 by relieving the tension on the cord 37 so that the springs 35 will press the valve plate 30 to its upper horizontal position. At this time the hopper 11 may be filled, to any desired degree, below the scraper 23 and when the applicator 10 is moved by the handle 45 about the floor, not shown in the drawings, the valve plate 30 is moved to an open position by the cord 37 against the tension of the spring 35 so that the glue may pass through the passage 22 from the hopper 11 to the chamber 12 and then out through the opening 38 onto the fioor. At this time the brush 39 will engage the glue or cement for application to the floor and the scraper 23 may be moved downwardly in the hopper 11 when it is desired to move more glue from the hopper 11 to the chamber 12.
While the specific details for one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A liquid glue applicator comprising an elongated glue hopper, an arcuate outwardly convex forward wall on said hopper, a vertically extending rear wall on said hopper spaced laterally from the lower edge of said arcuate wall and extending downwardly below said arcuate wall, end walls on said hopper at the opposite ends of said arcuate wall, said end walls being secured to the end edges of said arcuate wall and said rear wall and extending downwardly below the space between said arcuate wall and said rear wall, a flat horizontal bottom secured to the lower edges of said rear wall and end walls extending forwardly of said rear Wall spaced below said hopper, a cover secured to said end walls and said lower edge of said arcuate wall and spaced at its lower forward edge from said bottomto define an elongated outlet, said cover forming a lower chamber and an opening or passage between said hopper and said chamber, an elongated brace extending between said cover and said arcuate wall and secured thereto, an elongated valve plate extending along the length of said hopper hinged on said rear wall for closing the space between said rear wall and the lower edge of said arcuate wall, resilient means engaging said valve plate and said rear wallfor urging said valve plate to space closing position between said rear wall and said edge of said arcuate wall, manually operable valve plate opening means connected to said valve plate for moving said valve plate against the resilient means for opening the space between said arcuate wall and said rear wall to permit the flow of glue from said hopper onto said bottom and a resilient glue spreading member carried by said cover overlying the outlet between the lower forward edge of said cover and said bottom.
2. A glue applicator as set forth in claim 1 including a scraper blade pivoted to said vertical rear wall of said hopper and engaging the arcuate forward Wall thereof for scraping glue from said hopper through said opening between said hopper and said chamber. 7
3. A glue applicator as set forth in claim 2 including a handle pivoted on said scraper blade for arcuate movement relative to said blade to a position longitudinally of said hopper.
4. A glue applicator as set forth in claim 1 including a handle hinged on said rear wall for vertical arcuate movement and for drawing said applicator across the surface to be covered with glue.
