LABEL FOR BOTTLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,813, dated December, 11, 1883.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. DEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labels for Bottles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents an elevation of a bottle with my invention applied thereto Fig. 2, a detail view of the invention detached from the bottle.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in labels for bottles, and has for its object to provide a strong durable device of this character that will not be affected by moisture or climatic changes, and at I the same time be readilyand cheaply manuletters or marks, being preferably formed from 1 sheet metal at one operation, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a suitable body portion, having formed therewith descriptive letters or marks, said body portion and letters or marks being preferably stamped from sheet metal at one operation by suitable dies. This body portion A is formed with curved lugs or arms aa, having secured to their ends an interposed spiral spring, 0, which gives sufficiently to allow of the entire device being slipped over the head d of a bottle, and contracts 'when the same is in place upon the neck, to prevent it from being disarranged when thus in place.

It is obvious that the label may be made of a size to fit any portion of a bottle; but on account of effecting a saving in material it is preferred to make the same just large enough for attachment to the neck.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described bottle-label, consisting of a body portion having a suitable inscription, and provided with curved lugs or arms, and a spiral spring interposed between said lugs, and adapted to be applied to the neck of the bottle, as set forth.
