Description

B. TAYLOR GAR COUPLING.
(No Model.)
. Patented Nov. 27, 1883.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS wmmss N. PETERS. PhnKo-Lrinagnphzn washhapnm n. c.
Nrrnn STATES EATENT FFICE.
BENJAMIN TAYLOR, OF MORRILLTON, ARKANSAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,172, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed October 12, 1883. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN TAYLOR, of Morrillton, in the county of Conway and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved (Jar-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the construction of a draw-head having an upwardly and backwardly inclined slot in each side, through which slots a bolt is passed, which is held in the ends of a stirrup provided with suitable.
means for raising it. The drawbar is provided with a recess in its top, whereby a head will be formed on each end of the drawbar, which heads can catch automatically on the crossbolts in the draw-heads.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 shows two of my improved ourl-ouplings, one being shown in longitudinal section and the other in longitudinal elevation, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is an end view of a car provided with my improved coupling.
The drawhead A is provided with the usual longitudinal opening, A, and in each side with a short slot, B, which is inclined from the bottom to the top and from the front to the rear. A bolt, 0, passes transversely through the draw-head and through the slots B. The ends of a stirrup, D, having an inverted-V-shaped top, are mounted on the ends of the bolt 0. A rod, E, coupled to the top of the stirrup, passes through suitableguide-eyes on the end of the car, and extends up to'the roof. Two levers, F, pivoted on the end of the car, extend to the sides of the same, and have their inner ends coupled to the top of the stirrup D. The draw-bar G has its ends beveled, and is provided in its top with a recess, G, extending to near the ends, and thereby forming a head, G", on the upper surface of the draw-bar keep it raised until the head G has passed;
then the bolt 0 drops again and the cars are coupled, for if the bar G is drawn in the direction toward the outer end of the draw-head the inner ends of the hooks or heads G catch on the bolts G. If the cars are to be nocoupled, the bolt 0 is raised by means of the rod E or the levers F. The draw-bar can then be withdrawn.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a draw-head hav ing upwardly and backwardly inclined slots in the sides, of a bolt passed through the said. slots and held in the end of a stirrup-franie provided with means for raising it, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a car, of the drawhead A, having upwardly and backwardly inclined slots in the sides, the bolt 0, passed through the slots, the stirrup D, the rod E, and the levers F, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a car, of the drawhead A having upwardly and backwardly inclined slots in the sides, the bolt 0, the stirrup D, means for raising it, and the draw-bar G, provided in its top with a recess forming a head, G", at each end of the draw-bar, substantially as herein shown and described.
BENJAMIN TAYLOR.
