Description

No. 28,909. 'Patented June 26, 1860.
UNITED STATES FFICE.
ATENT HERVEY SLOAN, OF FRANKLIN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEED-PLANTERS.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, HERVEY SLOAN, of Franklin, in the county of Johnson and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinSeed-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2, a side eleration, andFig. 3 a perspective, ofthe two long seed-boxes, showing by what means their slides are connected.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of such devices, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will, now describe its construction and operation.
D represents a triangular shaped frame, which is provided on both sideswith three or more discharge-spouts, g g g.
' A A represent'two seed-boxes, which rest upon each wing of the frame, as seen in Fig. 1. B B are also two seed-boxes, and are located beneath A A onthe inner sides of the frame D.
A is also a seed-box, situated near the apex of said frame. Each of these five seed-boxes is provided with slides for the purpose of discharging the grain in a manner which will be more fully seen hereinafter.
d representsa cross-head secured to the slide of seed-box A.
i t are links which connect the cross-head d to the slides of seed-boxes A A. c 0 are two bars which connect the opposite end of the slides in boxes A A to the slides in boxes B B. It should be observed that the slides in boxes A A are provided on their bottom, at each end, with three slots, and also three in their middle. The slide in box A is also provided with three slots in its center, while those in boxes B B are merely crossed-ribbed. on their bottoms. Said boxes B B are designed more especially for grass-seeds, and should have a row of small holes perforated in their bottoms for the discharge of such seed. The boxes A A A should be provided with apertures just beneath the slots in their slides.
F represents a gear-frame. which is hinged to ears h h by means of the rod 0.
G is the main or driving wheel, and 7a a spurgear wheel, both of which are secured to the same shaft, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
fis a smaller cog-wheel, and so arranged that it can be thrown out of gear by means of the lever a.
a represents a pitman or driving-rod, which is connected at one end with the slide in seedbox A and at the other with cog-wheel b by means of a small crank.
m is a lever, pivoted near the top of one of the uprights p p of gear-frame F.
00 is a 'chain or cord secured to the main frame, as seen in Fig. 2.
q is a rack for the purpose of holding the lever m at any desired position. The cord 00 is hookedto one end of lever m, and by placing the lever in the rack and raising it up the machine may be elevated. By unhooking the chain or cord from the end of the lever the ma chine is again lowered.
It must be observed that the seed-slides in motion to the slides in boxes B B by means of the bars 0 0. Thus may three distinct operationsbe carried on simultaneously by the same machine without any additional labor.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The arrangement of the seed-boxes A A A, which are provided with three slides connected together and to a pitman or drivingrod (1 by means of a cross-head, d, substantiaily as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. The arrangement of the seed-boxes A A and B B in the relative position seen, their boxes are placed, when thesame are arranged seed-slides being connected together by the substantially as and for the purpose herein bars 0 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
specified. HERVEY SLOAN.
3. The combination of the gear-frame F, Witnesses: provided with levers m and n and chains or DAVID ALEXANDER,
cords 19, with the frame upon which the seed- THoMAs D. ALEXANDER..
