Description

.(NO Mdei.) l.
Y R13. WNGATB.
RAIL SUPPORTBR. No. 288,907. Patented Nov. 20, 18183.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT H. VINGATE, OF 'VESSON, MISSlSSIPPI.
RAiL-SUPPORTER.
SPEGIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,907, dated November 20, 1883. Application filed April 27.1883. (Xo model.)-
To alt whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. VINGATE, of Vvesson, in the county of Copiah and State of Mississippi, have invented certain ner and useful Improvements in RaiLSupporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in supports for railroad-rails, and which are intended to be used especially by those laying and repairing railroad-tracks; and it consists in a solid casting having awide base, andhaving an inclined notched portion which extends up over the the base, and in which notches the edge of the rail can be made to catch while the tie is being adjusted or the rail cut or repaired in any Way.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective of my invention.
A .represents the support, having` the Wide flat base B and the inclined portion C. This inclined portion extends any suitable distance upward above the base, and has a series of notches, D, inade in its inner side for the edges of the rail to catch in. This upright portion is inclined over the center of the base, so that the supporter will not beso readily upset, and so that the heavy Weights which are placedin the notches will come more or less directly over the center.
In laying and repairing the rails of railroadtracks it is necessary to have a suitable device for supporting the rail in position while the tie is being adjusted or While the rail is being Operated upon for any purpose. The mere supporting-frame isnot sufficient, because it is more or lessin the way, and hence is of little advantage.
The object of my invention is to provide a support which will hold the rails in an elevated position at their ends, and not be in the way While in use. By making this supporter of steel or Wrought-iron it can be made quite small and readily moved from place to place.
Having thus Vdescribed my invention, I claim- A supporter for rails having a suitable base or foot and an inclined notched portion which extends upward over the base, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof IaffiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT H. XVINGATE.
