HORSE-BOOT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOEL MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have in vented certain Improvements in Horse-Boots, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to construct a horse-boot which will be strong and durable, and which will readily adapt itself to the size of the hoof, and can be firmly retained thereon. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, in which- 7 Figure l is a side view of my improved horse- .boot; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same; Fig. 3,

The boot comprises the toe-piece A, side bars, B B, and straps D, E, F, G, and H.

The toe-piece consists of a base-plate, a, forming the toe-call: of the boot, and having lugs b b, a tongue, at, and a central opening, f.

The front end of each side bar, B, has a recess, g, and projection h, with opening a, the projection of one bar being adapted to the re oess of the other, and a pin, J, being adapted to the openings i of the bars and to the opening f of the toe-piece, and then riveted so as to pivot the side bars together and to the toepiece, thereby permitting the expansion and contraction of said bars to suit hoofs of different sizes. The ends of the bars form a snuglyfitting rule-joint, so that strainand wear due to loose fitting at this point are avoided, and the lugs b serve to protect the joint from blows which would loosen or impair the same.

The tongue 01 serves as a means of securing the front strap, D, which is held by a rivet, j, and to said strap D is riveted the lower bindingstrap, E, which passes through eyes m on lugs a on the side bars, B, and has its rear'ends connected by a suitable buckle.

The fetlock-strap F is riveted to the strap E near the front of the latter, and passes through one of the looped straps G at the rear of the 5 boot, the ends of the strap F being also secured of this being to permit the adjustment of the strap F as the size of the hoof may demand. More than two straps G may be used, if desired.

H is the front supporting-strap, which passes over the top of the hoof, and is riveted to the straps D, E, and F, so as to cause them to preserve their proper relation to each other. This arrangement of straps provides for the secure confinement of the boot to the hoof, and yet permits the ready application or removal of the same, only two straps, E and F, having to be manipulated.

The bars B B are side calks, 20. The straps D, E, F, G, and H are made of leather, that composing the strap D being stiff and heavy, so that it will retain its proper position even when the boot is removed from the hoof.

I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination of the jointed bars B and the pin J with the toe-piece having lugs b b, as set forth.
