CAR-COUPLING.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,800, dated November 20, 1883,
I Application filed June 20, 1883. (No mDdeL] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHANOEY O. HAsKIN, of Waltham, in the county of Tania and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Oar- Goupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in a laterally-swinging coupling-hook pivoted to a rod secured to a buffer-frame held on the bottom of the car. A lever pivoted on the car is provided with a curved arm having a bent end, whi'ch passes into a recess in the inner side of the couplinghook, which lever is connected with an upweirdly-projecting lever swinging in a slot in the car-floor.
The invention also consists in various parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of the end parts of two cars coupled by means of my improved coupler. Fig. 2 is a plan view of thebottom of the same, parts being shown in section. Fig. 3 is an inner side view of the coupling-hook and draw-head.
Two bolts, A, pass loosely through acrosspiece, B, fixed on the bottom of the car, and on the ends of the said bolts, and inside of their heads a, two bars, 0, are loosely held parallel with the cross-piece B. The bolts A pass also through india-rubber springs D, interposed between the cross-piece B and the bars 0. A rod, E, passes loosely through apertures in the bar 0 andthe cross-piece B,
and is provided at its inner end with ahead, to, between which and the cross-bar C a rubher spring, F, is interposed. An eye, 5, is formed on the outer end of the rod E, and a rubber spring, G, is interposed between the front cross-bar, G, and the said eye.
A coupling-hook, H, is pivoted to the eye I) in such a manner that'it can swing laterally-that is, in the horizontal plane-and the recess in hook H for eye b is sufliciently large to permit the hook to rock vertically on the eye 22 of bar E, so that cars of different heights of platforms may readily be coupled when re quired. The hook H is provided at its outer end with a laterally-projecting hook-head,
H, and at the middle with a laterally-project ing curved prong, H, between which head H and prong a short prong, J, projects from the side of the hook. A recess, K, is formed in the side of the hook-head H. The coupling-hook can swing between two check-pins, L, project-ing from the bottom of the car.
A spring, M, is held in the car-floor, between the rear end of the pivoted coupling hook and a ridge or projection, M, on the bottom of the car, and presses the inner end of the coupling-hook against a check or stop pin, N, on the bottom of the car. A lever, O, is pivoted in an arm, 0, projecting from the end of the car, and the outer end of the said lever is connected, by means of a chain or rod, Q, with the swinging or outer end of the coupling-hook. The inner end of the lever 0 passes through an eye, P, formed in the lower end of a lever, 15, pivoted on the car-floor, and passing through a slot, R, in the same. A curved bar, S, projects from the lever 0 through a slot in the draw-head, and is provided with a hook end, 8, adapted to be passed into a recess, S, in the inner side of the coupling-hook. The coupling-hook may be provided with pin-aperture T for the usual coupling-pins, and with transverse opening T", for the usual coupling-links.
The operation is as follows: If the coupling-hooks or draw-heads come together, their heads H engage, as shown in Fig. 2, and are held in this position by their springs M. The prong J of one coupling-hook or draw-head passes into the cavity or recess K of the other coupling-hook, thus preventing undue longitudinal movement of the coupling-hooks. It the cars bump together, the ends of the drawheads or coupling-hooks strike against the curved prongs H of the opposite hook. The shock produced when the cars are bumped together and the strain while drawing the ears are taken up by the springs D D and F and G, which protect the car from undue shocks and strains. If the cars are to be uncoupled, one
of the lovers 1? is moved in such a manner that it will cause head .9 of curved arm S to project from the inner surface of the corresponding coupling-hook, thereby pressing the end of the other coupling-hook from the firstmentioned coupling-hook in the direction of the arrow at, and at the same time drawing the end of the coupling-hook through which arm S passes from the coupling-hook in the reverse direction of the arrow at. c
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a draw-head, of the cross-piece B on the bottom of the car, the cross-pieces O O, the springs D D, the bolts A A,and the rod E, connected with the drawhead, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a draw-head, of the cross-piece B on the bottom of the car, the cross-pieces G O, the springs D D, the bolts A A, the rod E, to which the draw-head is pivoted, and the springs F G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the laterallyswinging coupling-hook H, of the lever 0, connected with the free end of the draw-head, the lever P, and curved arm S, extending from the lever 0 through the draw-head, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the coupling-hook H, of the rod E, to which it is pivoted, the spring M, the check-pins L N, and a spring buffer-frame, to which the rod E is secured, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The coupling-hook H, provided with a head, H, having a recess, K, a curved prong, H and a short prong, J, between the head H and the prong H substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
Dated this 23d day of May, 1883.
