Description

G. LAVALLY, Jr.
Car Coupling.
No. 28,872. Patented 1m 26.1860.
Witnesses: f M W AM PHDTO-LITHOHZD. N.Y nsnoaxz's PROCESS) UNITED STATES GEORGE LAVALLY, JR., OF OHAMPLAIN, NENV YORK.
COUPLING RAILROAD-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,872, dated June 26, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LAVALLY, J r., of the town of Champlain, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on the Shackles now in use on Railroads for Shackling Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed perspective drawing, making a part of this specification.
I Will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my bunter in any of the known forms, making slots T, V and L and apply thereto a lever N, supported at center by a fulcrum or prop G and at bottom of lever and at top of bunter I attach a spiral spring R, also at one extremity of lever I attach the pintle A and a cord or chain M and at the other a steel spring O; a bar S, is also fixed over the slot L. Its operation in shackling is as follows: As the link B,
enters the opening X at the end of the bunter, it strikes the spring G, and disengages it from the bar S. The lever N is at once depressed by the spring R forcing the pintle A into the holes WV, W, and thus shackling the cars together.
In unshackling the brakeman instead of going between the cars, stands on the platform or top of the car (freight or passenger) and by means of the cord, raises the lever, thus drawing up and freeing the bolt.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The application to rail car bunters of slots T, V and L, a lever N, supported at center by a fulcrum G (and attached to the pintle A), a bar S, a spiral spring R, the steel spring C, and the cord or chain M, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
GEORGE LAVALLY, J R. Vitnesses CHAS. E. EVEREST,
W. H. THOMPSON.
