OVERCHECK-TERRET FOR BRIDLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,709, dated November 20, 18 83.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. J ONES, of Fentonville, county of Genesee, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Overcheck-Terrets for Bridles; andI declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention consists of the combinations of devices and appliances hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

in which the top piece and the bed-piece are made in one; but this device is apt in use to yield a twisting movement to the headstall of the bridle, and consequently to irritate and annoy the horse, as well as to impair in some degree the efficiency of the device, by binding to a greater or less degree the bridle-rein in the loops of the flexible strap.

It is the object of my present invention to overcome this difficulty, and to produce, primarily, an overcheck-terret in which the top portion, which supports the bridle-rein, shall be swiveled about the lower or bed portion, which rests upon the headstall, and also to make a construction in which the top piece is dispensed with and the flexible strap is caused to serve at the same time as the top piece.

To this end, A is the headstall of a bridle; B, the bed-piece of the overcheck-terret; O, the top piece. D is the flexible strap,with boxloops D at its ends for the passage of the check or bridle rein.

The bed B. may or may not be provided with an opening, I), for the passage of thewinkersstrap. At the top of the bed B is aT-standard, B, elongated at right angles to the headstall-strap.

The top piece, 0, is provided with a corresponding slot, 0, elongated at right angles to the direction of the check-rein, so that the two parts can be engaged by passing the standard through the slot, and then by turning the two parts to their proper positions they are securely locked together; yet the connection is a free swivel-connection, which permits of perfect freedom of motion between the two.

It is apparent that the T-standard might project from the top piece, and the slot be located in the bed, if desired, though the construction is not'so good, in my opinion; but I would have it understood that my invention contemplates both constructions. So, also, the top piece, 0, may be dispensed with entirely, and instead thereof the flexible strap D may be so shaped at this point as to come down upon the bed-piece, and be itself provided with the elongated slot 0, or be at this point riveted to a suitable plate having a slot, 0. This last construction, in which the flexible strap is used to the exclusion of the top piece, I do not regard as desirable; yet it is contemplated as a part of my invention, and may be employed.

Another valuable feature of this invention is the facility with which this device can be adapted either for a side check or an overcheck. Thus, if in an overcheck-bridle it is desired to remove the overcheck and simply use the side reins, the top part, 0, can be at once detached and the bed-piece B be left on the headstall, ready for use whenever a change back to the overcheck is desired.

What I claim is- 1. An overcheck-terret consisting of a bedpiece adapted for attachment to the top strap of a bridle, and a swiveling overcheck-support detachably connected to said bed-piece by a joint which permits its removal and replacement without removing the bed-piece from the bridle, substantially as described.

2. In an overcheck-terret, a bed-piece and a top piece swiveled together by a T-standard and slot-connection, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
